The Case Against Reparations Through Art
You might call this kind of defiantly ahistorical setting the Magical Multiracial Past. The bones of the world are familiar. There is only one change: Every race exists, cheerfully and seemingly as equals, in the same place at the same time. History becomes an emoji, its flesh tone changing as needed.
Sylvia Baumgarten, award-winning historical romance novelist, 1933-2024
The Most Embarrassing Tombstone of All Time
Greek and Roman epitaphs can be touching. They can also, in the case of Allia Potestas, even be risqué. But they can also be horribly, incredibly embarrassing-- as in the case of Aphrodisios of Alexandria Troas, as seen in this short by the great Stefan Milo. This tombstone at the Louvre, recently translated into English by Chaniotis and posted on Twitter by Roko Rumora, has to be seen to be believed.
Historical fiction set in Ancient Greece about ordinary people
I would love to find more historical fiction set in Ancient Greece, about ordinary people. I'm a huge fan of Gillian Bradshaw, so anything like that would be a plus. I'm not picky about the genre either.
Do YOU dare to enter the threatening labyrinth of… GEARWORLD?
Come, unwary adventurers, into the strange, wondrous yet terrifying land of GEARWORLD! Documented by the distinguished travel author Eland the Younger, Gearworld is best described as “an access tunnel under reality.” Originally created by MeFi favorite Hugo and Nebula award winner Ursula Vernon (previously) as the draft for a Twine game, Gearworld has taken on a life of its own with multiple interactive fictions, written in Vernon's distinctive style.

Looking for used bookstores in the LA area with big romance selection
Every so often I take my friends to a new part of Los Angeles to look at a used bookstore with a good used romance selection. This town has lots of great used bookstores and it's fun using this as a jumping-off point to explore a new part of the city we're not familiar with.
My Macbook has been inexplicably been freezing
I have a brand new Macbook which has been for the most part pretty great. But it's been doing a few odd things lately...
Who were the Pre-Indo-Europeans?
What are the latest studies on Pre-Indo-European culture, and what's the current thoughts on Marija Gimbutas' work?
It was for the best, every time.
Why were people so scared of "juvenile delinquents" in the 1950s?
I've been fascinated with 1950s-1960s stuff for a long time, and for just as long I've accepted that people back then were fascinated with evil, misbehaving youth, and indeed thought that "JDs" were a Huge Problem in Society (i.e. West Side Story, Blackboard Jungle, or Rebel Without A Cause).

Has the world changed much since the 1980s?

What should 22nd century California be like?
I'm writing a series of time travel novels. Since my first one is scheduled to be published in November, I've been debating what my next one should be. One idea I have is for a young woman in San Francisco or Los Angeles to find herself 100 years in the future (in 2110 or so), but I need some help imagining a realistic future.
Watch out for that volcano!
The Last Days of Pompeii, written by the infamous Edward Bulwer-Lytton, was a Titanic size blockbuster novel back in the 1830s--- but it has not aged well. It is most well known for its many film versions-- there was the silent landmark film from 1913, an adaptation in 1935 and a spaghetti peplum with Steve Reeves from 1959-- but perhaps the most memorable (and exhaustive) version was the colossal star-studded miniseries made in 1984.
Meetup in Atlanta
I've lived in the greater ATL area for an entire year, and I still have yet to meet a single Atlanta MeFite. Come on, let's make something happen!
