What to do in NYC on Boxing Day with kids?
If you're going to be near Rockefeller Center anyway, Top of the Rock could be fun. I like the entire experience, including the view, more than the Empire State Building. If the little ones like video games, Nintendo NYC is also in that area.

Wish I could help with the restaurant suggestions, but it's been ages since I ate in Midtown on a regular basis and I have no idea what's good (or even what's around) anymore.

Mini coffee-table books?
Abbeville Press publishes an art book series called Tiny Folio which sounds like the sort of thing you're looking for.

What are the best things to make at home?
I also make homemade tomato sauce, heavy on the tomato chunks, usually when tomatoes are in season. Dry farmed Early Girl tomatoes, if you can find them, are incredible in a homemade sauce.

One thing I've been wanting to try is homemade gummy candy.

Mailable gift for someone fancy
If it's food, it should be fairly healthy. But chocolate would be ok.
Would be nice to support a woman-owned or BIPOC-owned business, but not imperative.

I'm a big fan of Seattle Chocolate, which is not only woman-owned, but donates portions of their sales of various items to Girls Inc. and other causes. Their Jcoco line features some good "fancy" options.

In the non-food realm of women-owned businesses,… [more]

A useful gift in cute clothing
Seconding stuff made by Fred; their items are practical, well-made, and whimsical.

(By the way, I also love their matryoshka measuring cups.)

What are foods that made you say, "Where have you been my whole life?!"
There are likely others, but:

- Yellow watermelon
- Gyudon
- Chocolate covered gummy bears
- Satsuma mandarins (I Miss the West Coast, part one)
- Dry farmed early girl tomatoes (I Miss the West Coast, part two)
- An amazing black sesame-based creamy dessert at Tamari Bar in Seattle. They also make a great yuzu cocktail, but that dessert blew my mind. (I Miss the West Coast, part three)
- Tres leches cake

What media hit you differently the second time around?
I've read The Great Gatsby three times, twice for classes and once on my own. The first time was your basic high school reading of it, the second was in a college class taught by a socialist-leaning professor (a lot of the book's class dynamics were covered that time), and the third, for pleasure, brought me to appreciate the flow and beauty of the prose itself.

In other mediums, Bloom County is more interesting to… [more]

Women comic book authors
Is manga okay? Right now, Fullmetal Alchemist is one of my favorite shounen (boys) titles, and it's done by a female writer/artist, Hiromu Arakawa. It's got an incredibly well-plotted story, strong characterization, and great writing and art throughout.

CLAMP is a well-known all-female group of manga-ka; their series cover a wide variety of genres and most of them are available in English. Chobits is especially good;… [more]

Intelligent Anime For Aduts?
I second the recommendation for Mind Game-- I've seen it, and it's one of the best animated features I've ever seen, from any country, period (and to compare it to Waking Life is rather limiting, IMHO). AniPages Daily has an exhaustive archive of Mind Game-related posts, if you'd like to read more.

There's no official English-language release, but the Japanese DVD does have English subs.

Help finding a great video game blog?
Hmm, yeah, I do visit Penny Arcade, but usually only skim Tycho's posts (sorry I didn't mention this before, but I'm typically of the "tl;dr" school when it comes to blog posts). As for GGA, I'm a bit wary of the "girl gamers" label, though I have read an article or two there in the past.

On first glance, Kotaku, Game Matters, and GameDevBlog look like sites I'd be interested in.
