The reason so much of news media sucks is they aren’t writing for you.

Ken Klippenstein resigns from The Intercept. In his announcement released through his newsletter, Ken details some of the machinations between the management class controlling journalism, and the journalists out there trying to do the work. Klippenstein will continue publishing his work independently along with legendary editor and national security researcher William Arkin, as well as FOIA specialist Beth Bourdon.

Like Jo Jo's and Devil Strips

Suaerkraut balls are a hometown favorite here in Akron, so much that we even named our baseball team after them (well, for only one day), and have our own local sauerkraut ball factory. Of course you can make your own, but they're just not as good.

Asbestos Litigation

My company is being pulled into an asbestos/mesothelioma lawsuit. The plaintiff and defense counsels, and the case is all taking place in Mason County, IL, which happens to hear more than a third of all asbestos/mesothelioma lawsuits in the country. None of us, plaintiffs or defense, live in Illinois, nor did any of this take place there. The way things are going I'm starting to feel like we're being pulled into a lawsuit grift mill.

Checked Out

Ed Zitron goes on a lovely, if lengthy, rant about popularity, Twitter Blue and social media in general, before dropping a plug for Bluesky Social, a new social media network that was founded by Twitter in 2019 as an open-source, decentralized spinoff. It now seems to be getting much more media attention .

Books about Operation Condor

I'm seeking book recommendations on Operation Condor. I keep hearing about it tangentially in various podcasts (such as Behind the Bastards last week), but want to read something more comprehensive on the topic.

"No ideas but in things" is an idea not a thing

No the CIA Didn't Invent "Show Don't Tell". Or maybe they did? Perhaps the effects of CIA money on the Iowa Writer's Workshop are overblown, but this piece in Current Affairs makes a strong case how the CIA has influenced "literature" in America. (previously)

Can canned fish taste good?

After reading this article on Heated, I'm inspired to try more canned seafood. My only exposure to it here in the US has mainly been canned tuna (which I love, especially when lit on fire), anchovies, and sardines. I've never been able to develop a palate for the latter I'm guessing due to the quality of what I've tried. (This is not even mentioning the pickled creamed herring I've seen my FIL eat!) What specific brands and preparations do you recommend? What might help me get over my aversion and learn to love the potted pescado?

Like Eating Sadness

In Mark Bittman's latest project, Heated, a culinary conflict is stewing. It started with a piece by Emily Nunn claiming that tuna noodle casserole has no place in the American comfort food canon. In defense of this esteemed hot dish, Samantha Irby responds with an appetizing retort disguised as a recipe.

Ordering custom orthotics online

I've been dealing with plantar fasciitis for over a year now. I've tried every remedy that my doctor has suggested. The next step is custom orthotics. I've looked at a few companies online where they send you a foot mold that you return. Has anyone tried any of these services? If so, do you have one that you recommend? Or should I avoid the online route and head to a local place for fitting?

Automate email to FTP file transfer

I have a vendor that would like me to place a daily report on an FTP server (either mine or theirs, preferably theirs). The only way I can do an automated export of this report is a CSV attachment via email. Is there a way to automate an email-to-FTP file transfer?

Bluetooth Interference

A bluetooth dead zone has mysterious appeared in my basement, which happens to be exactly where I have my bike trainer set up to use Zwift, which requires the use of bluetooth sensors. Everything worked perfectly fine 10 days ago, when I last used it, and I have not changed a single thing about my setup. I'm not sure how to find out what is the source of this new interference, or what to do about it if I find it.

The Beautiful Battlefield

The Cuyahoga Valley National Park, nestled between Akron and Cleveland in northeast Ohio, is one of the few urban national parks in the US. But unlike similar urban national parks that were created entirely of government land, the CVNP was formed from a mix of both public and private property. The 1980 film, For All People, For All Time (and accompanying PBS Frontline episode), documents the eminent domain seizures and heavy-handed tactics used by the National Park Service in the creation of the park. Since then, the few surviving towns that exist within the park (aka "Helltown") are shrouded in urban legend and folklore, which some attribute to the cleanup of the Krejci Dump.

Yo Vlad wassup it's Barry. Hit me on the hip.

How do presidents call other presidents? With last week's phone call between President Obama and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, it got me wondering how do heads of state call other heads of state? I imagine that one executive suite's switchboard calls the other's, but what's the diplomatic protocol for who picks up the phone first? Do they have super-secret phone numbers, or even phone numbers in the way we think of them? Are the calls private, or are is there an entire entourage listening in? Do they just hang up when they're finished, or is their an entire protocol for ending the conversation? What are some of the other "hidden" aspects of executive diplomatic communication and behind-the-scenes goings-on are there that the rest of us commoners never see?
