Space is big.
It would have been nice to have our solar system in there, to get scale versus some of the massive giant stars and nebulae. Anyone know where that would fit in?

Do Black Lives Matter on Broadway?
This was great at so many levels. It's such a pleasure to read a master discussing their craft, and in this case all the additional questions of race, blackness, identity, story telling. Thanks for posting it.

African-American playwright Aurin Squire contemplates performative blackness for a white audience in The Return of the Native Son (paywalled, sorry).

Apple Silicon
This looks like a great iOS update and I'm very excited about the ARM-based Macs.
The iOS home screen has been a mess since day 1. It's nice to see them cleaning that up.
Also really nice that they are going to support "EV Routing" in Apple Maps: it will integrate with your electric vehicle to include charging stops in your long-distance trips.

Digging into the AI ratings in Apple Photos
This is very cool. Now if they just made it read/write instead of read-only, you could have some real fun.

Bostock v. Clayton County
Interesting background on the inclusion of the "sex" in the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
According to the thread, it was added by a southern segregationist, possibly as a joke, possibly because he thought it might derail the bill altogether. The inclusion was supported by Alice Paul, Quaker, suffragist, and co-author of the Equal Rights Amendment.
When the the EEOC declined to enforce Title VII for sex, Betty Friedan and other feminist… [more]

Harry Potter and the Author Who Failed Us
JK Rowling just posted an essay describing her perspective on the issue.

Indeed, if I had seen your comment before I posted mine I would have used the word screed. I still think it's worth reading the original as well as the critique.

The Red Summer of 1919
See also the story of how a national campaign by whites terrorists overthrew the US government.

The story beginsWhen we talk about racial injustice in America, we usally start with slavery and then go to the Jim Crow era. But we often forget that there was a period after the Civil War where white racists actually overthrew the government. This is not hyperbole.posted to MetaFilter by Winnie the Proust at 5:50 PM on November 27, 2019

Milton's Shakespeare
This is wonderful. I hope they publish the complete annotated text. It would be a great way to read Shakespeare.

How Delivery Apps May Put Your Favorite Restaurant Out of Business
The article would be more interesting if it talked to restaurant owners who actually knew what was happening and had reasons for making the decisions they made. Saying things like, "yeah, we don't really know but we think we're probably losing money on it," and "it's like crack getting all those delivery orders" doesn't make me want to care about their problems.
Did I miss the spot where it explained why these restaurants have to offer delivery at all?

John Perry Barlow has died.
Thanks for posting this, but...
Barlow met Bob Weir, founding member of the Dead in 1971
No. They went to high school together in the early 1960s. Barlow didn't start writing lyrics for Bob Weir until much later, but he was involved in the scene a long time before that.
For example, here's a little piece he wrote about writing the lyrics to the song Cassidy. It includes great memories of hanging out with Neal… [more]

Here are the 25 Principles of Adult Behavior that Doctor Zed mentioned. So great.
Be patient. No matter what.
Don’t badmouth: Assign responsibility, not blame. Say nothing of another you wouldn’t say to him.
Never assume the motives of others are, to them, less noble than yours are to you.
Expand your sense of the possible.
Don’t trouble yourself with matters you truly cannot change.
Expect no more of… [more]

RIP Ursula K. LeGuin, October 1929 - January 2018
I saw her speak at Harvard in the 1980s. She was asked something to the effect of what work of hers was most overrated, or that she wanted to get away from. Something like that. Her answer was the Earthsea Trilogy. I'm so glad she found it in herself to revisit and reimagine that world in Tehanu and the later books. It's one of the great do-overs in literary history.
I loved original trilogy as a kid, and Tehanu was such a… [more]

"We won't exterminate all insects. -- Vertebrates would die out first"
When I was a kid I spent my summers in the country in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. I remember at night seeing screen doors covered with moths, all sizes and varieties of moths. That doesn't happen anymore. It hasn't happened for years.
I miss them. It's so sad, this impoverished world we're leaving our children.
