"It is a recognition that neoliberalism failed to deliver."
As a counterpoint he hangs out with Ross Douthat, who is worse and dumber.

An actual good essay NY Times managed to run on authoritarianism, presumably by accident. ‘The Seeds Had Been Planted. Trump Didn’t Do It Himself.’

Everyone has been screaming about KOSA being a transparent attempt to drive trans people off the internet for over a year now and all you’ll ever get out of any Dem leadership is that it’s bipartisan and “protects children” (it will not protect any children).

Kansas governor passes law requiring ID to view acts of 'homosexuality' online, vetoes anti-LGBTQ+ bill

Pretty good encapsulation of what Dems will oppose, for now, and what they’ll let slip by if you dress it up in appropriate language.

“The Mist” is a novella
haven't read any of these newer story collections, a problem I must rectify!

Not represented here, possibly because it’s all novellas, but Full Dark No Stars is really good. Really dark too though, earning the title.

Yeah, I used to be actually pretty good at coming up with queries that gave results, mostly by focusing on key prices of exact phrasing, and most of that doesn’t work anymore.

That’s not exactly not hallucination. You can quibble on terms but it’s all an artifact of this thing not actually knowing anything, just being a statistical model, and of weird artifacts get introduced into that model it will spit out those artifacts.

People treating these things as a source of truth and not a highly fallible aggregate of all the text they’ve scraped is horrifying.

The hype is this thing gives correct answers, not incorrect answers that are summaries of lies. People believe the hype and therefore believe the lies. That is a problem.

Also you’re probably calling out a bunch of ten year olds for siding with the Nazis, which is fair enough because they did, but I can see problems with that (mostly extensions of giving that option in the first place).

Why is there an AI Hype?
NFTs failed and blockchain failed to be useful and they had all this hardware left over. Also OprnAI is a simple API to hit up and get a superficially useful tech demo.

To echo Stephen King's thoughts, adaptations come and adaptations go, but the original is untouched by them and sits on your bookshelf.

I thought this was Raymond Chandler, Google says it was James M Cain. Writers say it a LOT.

Ironically his reaction to the Kubrick Shining makes King one of the least chill people about this ever. On the other hand he has his dollar babies which he’s not precious about.

One of my biggest beefs with AI is that companies really want to push it on everyone. You like it and want to use it? Go for it! Have fun! I don't want it, I hate it, and I don't want to have to be forced to opt out of it on everything. Just fuck off with foisting that crap on me.

It’s how you know it’s a scam.

I suspect much of this could be achieved with fairly conventional approaches, perhaps even leveraging some ML, without dedicating a quarter of your hard drive to highly invasive spyware.

I don’t feel bled dry as I don’t really spend money on it other than the odd batch of “gems” to do the mastery track thing, but it does feel relentless. Some of the recent sets have been really good and fun and it almost feels like they are squandering them by rushing through them so fast.

My assumption here is that the investigation won’t find much, everyone was operating in good faith and doing the best job they could to save a struggling company

Boy would I not assume that. I would assume the company was fatally holed beneath the waterline in a dozen different ways and actually the vertical integration to extract the last drops of money makes perfect sense.
