It Won't Be the Last Time Baboons are Mentioned, Either.
One could probably take MIDI inputs and convert them into Mouse/Keyboard/Gamepad controls. I didn't search too hard to find this MIDI to Joystick option. The harder part would be getting a trombone to MIDI. You might be able to use Silent Brass to get a line out and then convert that to MIDI. Alternatively, you could make something like the Trom or Digibone

So I think it is possible to play CoD or Elden Ring with a trombone or trombone-like instrument, but you'd have… [more]

Live through all of Infinity (Blade) in just 40 minutes!
I played it at the time and very distinctly remember thinking, "This? This is what people are so excited about?" I think its success had to do with how starved the platform was for games that felt like serious "gamer games."

I also remember Brandon Sanderson writing a novelization was big news in the fantasy world at the time.

It's what you were made for
I have several thoughts.

1. If I were supreme ruler of the world I would make it illegal to use any piece of pop music that ever made it onto the Billboard Top 100 in a movie trailer, cover or not.

2. Until watching this trailer I had assumed this movie was about an anthropomorphic skateboard.

3. I'm sure a lot of people will love this movie. I can think of several friends of the top of my head that will be all about… [more]

Folks might find Misophonia and Potential Underlying Mechanisms: A Perspective interesting.

I was curious if there had been research into the possibility of Misphonia being rooted in a conditioned response that might not be present in people raised in cultures where mouth sounds are not considered rude or taboo like they are in western culture. So I did some searching with good old google scholar.

First off, it looks like is not something that… [more]

This thread is very predictably metafilter. I can't believe that I have to come on here and defend people spending waaaaayyy too much money on electronics, yet here I am. This is sports, coffee, and bad escapist fiction all over again. For my sanity, don't make me defend dog shows next.

"the recognition of roast potatoes at home and abroad"
I refuse to believe that someone that lives in California and has been on metafilter since at least 2011 has never encountered fries/chips.
posted to MetaFilter by forbiddencabinet at 3:24 PM on June 21, 2022
The difference is mostly semantic these days. Used to be that roasting meant over a flame and baking meant in an oven of some kind. These days we roast and bake in the same appliance. I suppose if you are being generous you might say that roasting implies a higher temperature and if you wanted char on it you would say to broil it.

In North America people usually say roasted potato when they are talking about the crispier potato that is seasoned and say baked potato to… [more]

Building a 5-acre pond
If I had build a 5 acre pond money I would probably do it too. Although, my 5 acre pond would be a lot different from this one.

I wish he went into more detail about plants. I found the vegetation video on the playlist very underwhelming even though plants are probably the most interesting part of setting up a pond or planted aquarium. I didn't get the impression that he has put enough plants in for the long term health of the pond and fish, but he did say he talked to a… [more]

the Ptolemaic Clock
This made me wonder, Why are clocks shape they are?" So thanks for prompting me to look at their history a little. Prevailing thought seems to be because sundials were round and moved clockwise as well so that was the natural form to copy for mechanical clocks for easy adoption. Side note: other forms of early timepieces, like water or incense clocks, didn't really have standardized forms in the way that sundials did.

“I’d never heard about it. And then I only hear about it.”
I'm convinced the popularity growth is because of the Streisand effect and boomers wanting to feel rebellious because the noise can be disruptive to those that aren't playing.

The pickleball courts in my area were removed from the community/rec center near me because of the noise complaints. I live 1-2 miles away and could occasionally hear the cracks from the racket. I can't imagine what it would have been like to try working from home if you lived adjacent to it.

For those that haven't kept up with his later stage career, be sure to check out Juno to Jupiter (2021), which was very good if you want that distinctive synthy Vangelis sound. If you aren't so into that kind of old school synth sound then go listen to Nocturne (2019), which is kind of a tour through his entire career via piano and very light touches of synthesizer.

The greener the colour, the more climate-friendly the electricity ...
Norway is reported in that way because those are the bidding zones that the country uses. This site inherited that from the data source they are pulling from for that region (ENTSO-E).

I'm not sure why Norway has so many more bidding zones compared to the rest of Europe. Maybe something to with how much power they export and shift around? Could just be that electricity pricing is a hot topic in Norwegian politics.

You typically get a PDF copy of the rulebook. Some of them have multiple versions of the rules like a print optimized one, a plaintext one (for screenreaders, usually), and so on. Some of the packages also include extras like character sheets, maps, tokens, and that sort of thing. Oh! I have opinions on this, but I'll keep it short (ish).

I like localisation (of any language) so long as is it focuses on general readability/language flow BUT! I do not like it when culture (jokes, accents, idioms, etc) are localised by replacing them with an English one that the translator deems is close enough. As someone that evacuated from a 4 story apartment building this very morning because of a fire... yeah, nope. There's a really invigorating rock scene going on in the UK. Check out the Brixton Windmill scene. It is overtly political, post-brexit stuff, that has hugely diverse influences pulling from prog, post-punk, hardcore, and countless other things. Influences are so diverse that it is hard to imagine groups like Squid existing before people were growing up with access to giant music libraries through the likes of Spotify.

An apology for a “condescending and cringey” review
I notice that nobody signed their names to these re-evaluations and the entire thing is just credited to Pitchfork. I also notice that if you search the albums in their review database the original scores and reviews are still in place.

So, was it it the critics re-evaluating their earlier or reviews or is that Pitchfork decided they couldn't let these reviews stand? If the critic changed their mind on the review the original review should be updated to reflect their… [more]

Oh, I missed the name at the end of each re-evaluation. I didn't miss the bolded declaration of that the reviews aren't canon. I just think that is cowardly. Either they stand by the reviews or they don't. Plenty of review magazines have more than one critic review something. They should post new reviews. I don't like the coy way they have approached this and I think it is disrespectful to the original critics.

The irony of posting this as a medium article tickles my funny bone even if I do agree with the author. A24 has always been about 50/50 on their picks. The films they choose to distribute are pretty consistently "elevated" genre films, which is why I think they have such a diehard fanbase. They seem to be increasingly producing the films they distribute, so it will be interesting to see how that affects the overall quality of their catalogue. They also cut ties with Scott Rudin earlier this year for being a toxic asshole. He did bring in many of their more popular films and that might… [more]

Is Wingspan actually a game at all? Is it art?
I like Wingspan, but I wouldn't call it art. I don't think it is trying to accomplish anything beyond being a fun diversion in an attractive package. Games can certainly be art and I think that in order for them to become art they need to be doing something with their mechanics and game systems that goes beyond play. Being an attractive object, in my opinion, is not enough for a game to be art. The art must be experiential or procedural otherwise it is graphic/product design, which can also be… [more]

No rappers because they were on the previous list so they are deliberately looking at popular singers. The legends are pulled from Rolling Stone's top 100 singers list and the modern ones are pulled from the Spotify top 100.

There's actually a Franciscan fraternity in Victoria so it isn't that uncommon to see an actual habit-wearing and poverty-avowed monk in the city.

David Johnston can be polarizing, but it's more the people that he is connected with that are problematic. There is no denying the role his activism and advocacy have played in Victoria and the province in general.
