Khartoum has been reduced to a charred battleground.

A War on the Nile Pushes Sudan Toward the Abyss The gold market is a graveyard of rubble and dog-eaten corpses. The state TV station became a torture chamber. The national film archive was blown open in battle, its treasures now yellowing in the sun..... (SLNYT)

Travel insurance for chateau rental for 1 week?

A US-citizen friend is going to rent a chateau in France for 1 week for 8 people for a Big Life Event this fall (not a big party, no activities beyond people staying there). Rental is a nonrefundable $10k, and a $3k damage deposit on top of that. She wants to know if there are insurance/travel insurance products that can protect this amount....

Jungle Vision

So, I am going for a multi-day hike in the jungle/rainforest with a guide . What practices can *I* use to i) spot wildlife and ii) learn to pay attention to notice details. Additional difficulties: the visual field/detail can be overwhelming, and I'm likely to be tired from hiking. Assume all hours of the day (dawn to dusk)!

The Home Office’s plan was impeded somewhat by British law

The secret deportations: how Britain betrayed the Chinese men who served the country in World War II. During the second world war, Chinese merchant seamen helped keep Britain fed, fuelled and safe – and many gave their lives doing so. But from late 1945, hundreds of them who had settled (some married, with kids) in Liverpool suddenly disappeared. Now their children are piecing together the truth.

Mp3 player/music editor that deletes spoken words and plays music

Is anyone aware of a podcast/mp3 player that will automatically take an mp3 file and then either skip/ignore (or delete) spoken-word/conversation in that mp3 and only play the music. Or, alternatively, a sound editor that could convert the file to a “just music” mp3. The player must work on android. The editor could work on either android or MacOS.

UN+Maritime Capitalism. I'd rather stop shipping this pairing.

Tasked to Fight Climate Change, the International Maritime Organization - A UN agency - does the Opposite, in secret. The NYT reports that the industry that generates more CO2 than all of America's coal plants has, for decades, suborned the UN agency tasked with regulating it. The IMO keeps on delaying and watering standards down (and neutering their enforcement) so much, that shipping is dirtier and more consumptive every year. Regulatory capture, old school transnational-capitalism style.

Actions to increase likelihood of mild covid19 recovery?

Are there any peer-reviewed (or at least clinician-generated) studies showing what to do if you have covid19 - but have mild symptoms - and want to act in a manner that most likely slows or stop the disease’s progression to a more serious phase? I’m not asking for quackery, false cures or anecdata. However, as of March 22 there have been a minimum of 300k+ infections and 95k+ that have been “recovered from” under pretty intense surveillance. Apart from the biological statistics of age, pre-existing conditions etc, are there any commonalities or trends in the *actions* (or non-actions!) of recoverees, vs worseners? Let’s assume that not-smoking, rest, hydration are a given….

Airline bankruptcy: airline claiming I owe them for canceled flight

Last year, I booked a flight ticket with Condor Airlines (a german company) who were owned by Thomas Cook Airways (TCA) who also provided the flights. TCA went bankrupt, my flight (and all TCA flights) were cancelled, no flight or alternate flight was provided by condor, I thus performed a successful chargeback on my credit card. Now Condor claims I owe them for the flight (even though none was provided!) and if I don’t pay they will pass my debt onto a collection agency.
