The one time I saw him in the past few years, he was talking about how we can't forget how great capitalism is or something like that, and it felt like I was listening to a '90s Democrat. Has he changed up at all in that regard? Any friendlier to socialism nowadays?"

His recent interviews with Larry Summers and Janet Yellen are instructive.

“AI” George Carlin Sucks For Every Reason You Thought And More
The writing is definitely not generated, the whole thing is too coherent (and vulgar). Plus as the Ars article notes it's basically an open secret among fans that the podcast is a bit of kayfabe. IMHO, true wit and personality is the last real test of these languages models -- even GPT-4 struggles to write comedy that isn't bland, disjointed, and mediocre.

The voice itself might be synthesized -- startup ElevenLabs introduced a TTS product able to… [more]

A torrid love affair with GPT-5 has not been ruled out
Betting market Manifold has a page open for wagering on explanations for Altman's ouster. Based on reporting so far, the conventional wisdom is clustering around "Disagreement over future direction of OpenAI and capital allocation for research vs commercial" and similar... but the long tail of user-submitted reasons is a real treat. Highlights:

- Too much e/acc, not enough EA

The Verge: Breaking: OpenAI board in discussions with Sam Altman to return as CEO

The OpenAI board is in discussions with Sam Altman to return to CEO, according to multiple people familiar with the matter. One of them said Altman, who was suddenly fired by the board on Friday with no notice, is “ambivalent” about coming back and would want significant governance changes.

Verge update:
A source close to Altman says the board had agreed in principle to resign and to allow Altman and Brockman to return, but has since waffled — missing a key 5PM PT deadline by which many OpenAI staffers were set to resign. If Altman decides to leave and start a new company, those staffers would assuredly go with him.

The Information: Emmett Shear Becomes Interim OpenAI CEO as Altman Talks Break Down

Sam Altman won’t return as CEO of OpenAI, despite efforts by the company’s executives to bring him back, according to co-founder and board director Ilya Sutskever. After a weekend of negotiations with the board of directors that fired him Friday, as well as with its remaining leaders and top investors, Altman will not return to the startup he co-founded in 2015, Sutskever told staff.… [more]

@OpenAI:
We have reached an agreement in principle for Sam Altman to return to OpenAI as CEO with a new initial board of Bret Taylor (Chair), Larry Summers, and Adam D'Angelo.

We are collaborating to figure out the details. Thank you so much for your patience through this.

The apparent ease with which an emerging corporate juggernaut sloughed off nominal control by an idealistic non-profit board after they flipped their kill-switch is much more interesting when you view it according to the theory that corporations are a form of singularity.

Ars Technica: New report illuminates why OpenAI board said Altman “was not consistently candid”

Now, in an in-depth piece for The New Yorker, writer Charles Duhigg—who was embedded inside OpenAI for months on a separate story—suggests that some board members found Altman "manipulative and conniving" and took particular issue with the way Altman allegedly tried to manipulate the board into firing fellow board member Helen Toner.

I'll say one thing for this debate: it's refreshing having the field winnowed to the point that candidates can actually speak sedate, coherent bullshit instead of desperately cross-talking, crabs-in-a-bucket bullshit. (Tbh felt the same way about the 20+ candidate Dem debates, albeit with marginally less bullshit.)

Well that was a fuckin whipsaw of a half-hour. Ramaswamy spouting Great Replacement and Big Lie conspiracies, Megyn Kelly asking a disgustingly transphobic question, Christie responding with surprising tolerance (though from a "parent's rights" POV). Christie then asked about how to restore faith in the justice system and disappointingly doesn't respond with "by not committing a bunch of obvious crimes and calling the indictments persecution."
