A world of MeFi creativity
Jordan117

It just has my Creature Creator stuff right now since I'm still waiting on my copy to arrive, but I could not resist downloading the (offline-only) game when it leaked, so I already have some stuff cooked up to upload when I get the real thing.

My thoughts on the game so far:

It's really all about the Space phase. The early stages are so short, so simple, that they're more like tutorials to inure you to the… [more]

What's in a name?
When I was younger, one of my favorite computer time-sinks was Civilization II. I wasn't much into the combat aspect, but more the challenge of developing an efficient and aesthetically-pleasing civilization. It was pleasing to drop down new cities and carve spindly roads through the hills and forests, laying down irrigation and farming like abstract art. Then later ramrodding railroads like I-bars through the webwork, hooking up my vast expanse of cities in a united,… [more]

No, my post is not about the Imageshack frog
Thanks for the heads up. I just tested the image on the various caches. Google and Archive.org don't have it, but Coral does. I'll go ahead and use that if there's no chance of them taking the image down.

Just out of curiosity, is uploading images to hosting sites not allowed because it might exceed bandwidth caps and get removed? Or does it fall under a broad interpretation of the self-linking ban?

Users are people too
I'm not getting the snarky backlash by some. Isn't it pretty accepted here that the otherwise-common reply convention of "@username" is Not Acceptable because of its abrupt and impersonal style? And that people who use it are often (informally) called out and told to use something else that doesn't get on everyone's nerves? In light of that, I don't see why changing "users" to something more personable is such a ridiculous idea, especially since it isn't forcing anyone to… [more]

How do I get a heads-up on new comments to an FPP I didn't post?
If you must have it via email, you could use a service like RSSFWD to forward the RSS feed for a thread to your email account. Just copy the URL of a post into the site's entry form, let them detect the feed, and then provide your email address. It'll let you customize how new items are sent to you, as well.

But it is kind of a pain to do over and over again for each new post. If you plan on subscribing to threads often, just get a feed reader like Google Reader or Bloglines.

A quick search shows it's the shortcut to open up the DOM Inspector in Firefox.

I'm not so sure it would be a problem, though. It was an optional component of Firefox 2, and is only available as an add-on in Firefox 3. And even then, I'm not sure that Ctrl-Shift-I will be the shortcut for that incarnation of it. (I don't have DOM Inspector installed so I can't verify).

I'm also assuming the OP's request was denied...

Also, a shout-out to the good people at Off-Planet Films. The post I made on them was the only one I've made that really felt like pure Mefi -- something quirky, obscure, and cool that I stumbled across on my own that wouldn't get much play otherwise. How can I add Social Apps that aren't currently on the "Also On" drop down menu?
I'm guessing the reply will be to link to your various other accounts in your "About me" box. Still, the little user icons are so snazzy! (And my "About" box is pretty cluttered as it is...)

If there's one of those I'd like to add, it'd be Picasa. It'd be fairly easy to plug into the "Also on" widget -- the URL is just "picasaweb.google.com/USERNAME". Why should Flickr get all the love, anyway?
posted to MetaTalk by Rhaomi at 3:53 AM on April 14, 2008
On second thought: Would it be easier, in the long-run, to make the "also on" boxes user-definable? Right now we have to choose services from a limited list, provide the appropriate username, and the page then converts that info into a little box. Could we replace that with a script that, when given a link to any profile page, will create a box linking to that page and bearing that site's favicon? That way all the little niche sites can be included, and we won't have to hear any… [more]

Faviconless sites could be represented by little hearts! Because, you know, Metafilter loves you.

Or, I don't know, it could be a chain link, or something equally generic. I'd expect most social sites large enough for a Mefite to be a member of (and want to link to) to have a favicon, anyway.

pearlybob: "Please forgive but what is SEO? I'm not following..."

Search Engine Optimization. It's the art/science of designing your website to be more accessible via Google, thus gaining more traffic and making your site's ads more profitable. There are a lot of hucksters in the SEO biz, who value raw numbers and eyeballs over quality of content and the user experience. They're also the folks who often try to self-link here, one of many attempts to game the system.

I wouldn't really mind Y!A if they didn't insist on clogging up Google search results so much. MeFi Xbox Gamers
The only problem I see with this is that the central MeFi gamertag will be limited to 100 friends. If more than that want to join up, we'll have to make a back-up name and have everyone add that account to their list, too. Still, there's less than fifty names on the Wiki list, so it shouldn't be that big of a worry for the time being.
