Picflood
Picflood presents an unfiltered stream of pictures publicly posted to Twitter, updated in real time, with or without a filter for text in the tweet. Because of the specific Twitter API stream that Picflood hooks into, users see only a small subset of Twitter photos, but they still come through fast enough that it's hard to fully process each image before it disappears. Very NSFW.
Even if Bloomberg Didn't, You Can!
Programmers will tell you that coding is one of the most approachable
skills there is. If you want to learn, there's
Code Academy, or perhaps
LearnPython.org. There are
major non-profits that want to help you learn,
free
books,
and videos. Great!
Finished with all of those?
Dynamic web forms: find a builder or make from scratch?
I have a couple web forms I'd like to make: one for a professional purpose, another for personal use (though that could exist as a program or an app that I don't know about). Is it better to find a service that will allow you to build conditional forms, or can they be made from scratch with some ease?
Recommendations for DIY Home Surveilance Hardware?
About six months ago, we bought and moved into a new house (yay!) in a neighborhood that is up-and-coming (yay!) but still has a crime rate higher than I love (boo!). I'm looking to install video surveillance equipment in the home and I'm looking for advice and recommendations.
Best Longform of 2013
2013 had a lot of great longform writing. Longreads and Longform lead the way with their best of lists.
Lots of sites provided year end lists: The American Prospect, The Atlantic, Business Week Buzzfeed, The Daily Beast, Dazed Digital, Deadspin, Esquire UK, Flavorwire, Gawker, Inc., Impose Magazine, Indiewire, i09, Lifehacker, Maclean's, Mashable, Mother Jones, National Geographic, National Journal, The New Yorker, On Earth, Out, Pocket, ReadWrite, Slate, Spin, Sports on Earth, The Electric Typewriter, The Verge, The Voice Media Group, and The Washington Post.
A tale of Dynamite and septic tanks

What is the best way to "purge" my information from the internet?
I'm interested in what people have done to find and then delete their personal information (address, especially) from online directories. I've deleted my info from WhitePages and Spokeo, but I'm wondering what other sites I should look at or if there's a master directory of some sort out there. Googling doesn't turn up much, but I know my information could still be out there.
Thank you.
What can i do with a (cloud) server?
Someone linked to CloudatCost on Metafilter recently and, on a whim, I sprung for the $35 for life plan -- so I'm now the proud owner of a virtual cloud server. But I'm kind of a doofus and don't know what I can actually do with it.

Does anyone remember a post that spawned various comments with links to videos of jet airplanes doing various seemingly impossible maneuvers?
I like advice columns. Please advise.
Nothing helps me fall asleep at night like a well-written advice column. My current favorites are Dear Prudence, She Said, She Said, and The Gentleman Scholar. Who else might I like?
Find out your 'fitness age' and get fit
Using the results of a study of 4,260 adults, the Cardiac Exercise Research Group (CERG) at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) has developed an online fitness calculator which outputs your 'fitness age'. If the results alarm you, they've also provided a 7-week fitness program.
Stock up on the handyman's secret weapon
From 1991 to 2006, there was one show that stood ready to help Canadian men with much needed advice on D.I.Y., hunting, fishing and other wildlife pursuits, not to mention married life and other challenges of modern life. Now the entire archives of the Red Green show are available on youtube.

Myths, Presumptions, and Facts about Obesity, from the New England Journal of Medicine. Among the myths discussed: Small sustained changes in eating or exercise make a big difference in weight; losing big amounts of weight quickly is less effective long-term than slow and gradual loss; that PE classes help reduce weight; and, tragically, that "a bout of sexual activity burns 100 to 300 kcal for each participant." But take heart! The authors point out that presumptions around the badness of snacking and yo-yo dieting are not supported! (There is also a correction to the original article, because the issue of breakfast remains contentious.)
Fibromyalgia... that's a thing? Help me understand.
My wife is in the process of being diagnosed with fibromyalgia and I want to be informed, helpful, and sympathetic. More than that, I'd like to make sure I'm free from any crapulent and wrongheaded misconceptions about it. Can you point me to some resources that could give me a better understanding of fibromyalgia: what it is, how it works, some practical science background, etc.?

Perhaps the Most Important Gig Ever
On Jun 4, 1976, between 40 and 100 people gathered to see the Sex Pistols perform at the Lesser Free Trade Hall in Manchester, a gig that has been called "the greatest gig of all time." It was attended by members of Joy Division, New Order, the Fall, the Smiths, A Certain Ratio, Ludus, Simply Red, Buzzcocks, Magazine, the producer Martin Hannett, and voted one of the most important concerts of all time, alongside Woodstock and Live Aid. A documentary about that night is called "I Swear I Was There." (SLYT)

Help setting up the OBI100 (Google Voice questions/confusion inside!)
I need to set up a new google voice number to use my Obihai OBI100 strictly for work. However, I do not have an extra number to associate with the google voice account (and don't want to use my current google voice number that is used for personal purposes). What cheap options are there available to me to do so?
Where did the Boiled Hot Dog Go?
Scorekeeping at baseball games is becoming a lost art. Many other traditions are vanishing from professional baseball as well. "Other traditions lost from our list included boiled hot dogs taken from tepid water and slathered with mustard by vendors, and dugout agitators formerly known as “bench jockeys,’’ and bad-breathed managers such as Billy Martin and Earl Weaver kicking dirt on umpires, while league officials look at it as entertainment."
“Two women walk into a bar and talk about the Bechdel test.”
What's the most intellectual joke you know?
is Slate's summary of this Reddit thread (for once, the comments are worth it!), with more good comments in this Marginal Revolution discussion. Of course, we can do better...
Famous cases where nobody remembers the original complaint?
Windsor v. US will be remembered as a decision on gay marriage but was originally a question of estate taxes. Griswold v. Connecticut is remembered as a decision on constitutional protection of privacy, but it was filed to challenge a statute prohibiting contraception. Capone v. US is the trial that shut down a notorious gangster, smuggler, and murderer, but the specific charge was tax evasion. What other examples are there of famous cases where the actual complaint has become kind of obscure for most laymen? Is there a term for this sort of case?
Give me some life-long exercise habits to squish into my very busy life.
My life is crazy busy (whose isn't?) with school, small children and work, so often exercise is the thing that gets cut. I want to make my daily life more active, so that when I can't "exercise" I have still not been totally sedentary.
I loved this question; I now stand like a flamingo every time I brush my teeth. But the question asks for general life tricks, and I am looking for exercise-specific habits. I am having a hard time googling for tricks because I am not looking for tricks or habits to implement while "exercising" or to get me to exercise.
Before the world knew his name
In 1965 guitar legend Jimi Hendrix was doing the chitlin circuit with R&B acts, where he honed some of the guitar artistry as well as the showman skills that would soon set the world on fire. Here's a taste of that pre-rock star Jimi, as a member of the Buddy and Stacy revue, doing the Junior Walker classic Shotgun. If you want more pre-rock star Jimi, well, there's...

App/Filters that made my digital signature look hand written and pretty
I just filled out a tax form with a signature app where I "drew" my signature in the field (with a mouse) and it applied filter "smoothing" and other things to make it look like a real ink signature... It actually looked BETTER than my real hand written signature.
Where can I get something like that to make my own ink looking images?

Help me strip my laptop down to an ancient email checking machine
I have a six year old hp pavillion laptop. It is slow and often infuriating. However, I don't use it for anything too demanding so I figure there are better things I could spend my money on than a shiny new computer. Help me figure out how to make my computer spend it's energy doing what I need it to do and nothing more.

Success is inspiring
I am seeking blogs of people who have made health changes in their lives involving diet, exercise and reducing vices. I am particularly interested in blogs that have daily or very regular posts where the personal aspects and challenges of the health goal are explored at length.
"But more important than mere longevity was the fact that he had lived through and been a part of more baseball history than almost any other man."
The results of the 2013 Baseball Hall of Fame Veterans Committee Election were released today, and the three men elected were Jacob Ruppert, who owned the Yankees for 24 years and helped steer the team from mediocrity in the 1910s to some of the greatest teams in baseball history; Hank O'Day, one of the longest-serving umpires in league history and the man who made the official ruling on Merkle's Boner, and Deacon White, the first great catcher and one of the main players in the first baseball dynasty, the Boston Red Stockings of the 1870s National Association.

Officers in the United States Marine Corps face a long and rigorous selection and training process. First, Officer Candidate School, where they receive their commissions. Then The Basic School, where they are taught the credo: 'Every Marine A Rifleman.' Then, for those who choose and are selected for the infantry, the Infantry Officer's Course.
With the 'front lines' of modern combat blurred at best, the United States Marine Corps will begin accepting women for the infantry in September, enrolling them in the Infantry Officer's Course.
People who do x are more likely to y
I'd like to read about unexpected statistical correlations that begin to emerge when companies or academics use data mining to analyze behaviour in large groups of people. I'm looking for articles/sites that are a little more serious than this (found while searching Metafilter for this topic). More like this (NYT: Target is able to predict that some customers are pregnant before their children are born). Thanks for your recommendations!

Hetty Green
Best known for the (exaggerated) tales of her miserliness, Hetty Green was arguably the greatest female investor in history. During the 1907 Bankers' Panic, her loan of $1.1 million helped keep New York City solvent. Her estate - greater than that of J.P. Morgan's - was valued at more than $2 billion in today's money.

Corporate fraud / Benford's law
One way to measure corporate fraud is look at reported numbers and see if they follow Benford's law - number sets that are manipulated usually deviate from Benford's law. A recent analysis of all public companies over the past 50 years has shown a steady upward deviation, strongly suggesting there is more corporate fraud now than ever before (peaked in 2008).
