MetaTalk post: Team Threaded Comments
Dropping in to agree with the other posters who are discouraged from posting. I often think about something I think is cool - a musician, game, event - and wonder if it would make a good FPP.

Then I think about it again. The singer I like has a humorous song about a controversial topic. That will probably get picked apart. This other guy sings about celebrities, some of whom were problematic. Someone else used a word now considered a slur in an old song, so can I post... [more]

It's just so, so common for an FPP to turn into a game of "how long does it take until someone figures out why this thing you like is bad?" The culture here feels badly broken.

Unfortunately, I do do this math when I make FPPs because I've been around here long enough to see that there is a super high probability rate that the first five comments will either be:

A) the thing you like sucks

Ask MeFi post: Broke a housemate's things
Via text, with a photo of the plate: Hey roomie, bad news: I chipped a plate. I’m very sorry about this. I’ll go to IKEA this weekend to get a replacement, and I’ll also get a new spatula to replace that one that got burnt a few years ago. If you’d prefer me to give you some money instead, I can do that. Would $25 feel fair? Anyway, I’ll buy the replacements unless I hear from you otherwise. Sorry again!

The Entity itself makes me laugh. LAUGH, I TELLS YA.

But I agree, giving David psychic powers--hey, buddy maybe you didn't need those magic mushrooms from S1 after all--is classic Evil finding something new to throw at us.

I'm still enthusiastic about this show's maximalist "throw everything at the wall and see what's interesting" approach to plot development, but giving David psychic powers feels like maybe a loose thread too far to me, like are you really going to introduce that and tie it up in the one remaining season? (Although, FWIW this season will have 14 episodes, so maybe they've got time to do it.) I just feel like there's already a lot of stuff going on with David that's interesting and ties... [more]

FanFare post: Chucky: Previously, on fuckin' 'Chucky':
Aw man, I haven't finished the second half of this season yet (I just remembered that it came back!) but it is so good. So much gleeful gore, so much camp. This season has been, I think, a little not-as-good as the first two, maybe? but it's still great TV and I can't wait to finish the rest.

I was just about to mention the episode of Knowledge Fight that dropped over the weekend. It's over three hours long and I'm still working my way through it. I don't listen to the show that often, but when I heard about the latest shitfest I had to tune in.
posted to MetaFilter by slogger at 8:35 AM on June 7, 2024
My only question here is what the boys from Knowledge Fight are going to get up to once the Alex Jones show is finally gone for good. By the way, if you want to enjoy hearing an absolutely shitfaced alex jones cry and whine and scream on air as he realizes that the rollercoaster is about to finally stop, their June 3rd episode is full of schadenfreude.

FanFare post: Movie: The First Omen
Better than most prequels I've seen. I think they could've matched the political drama with an equal amount of dogmatic exposition, though that might have made for a four hour film.

Me, during the first 30 minutes: Hey, this lives up to the hype! Very solid.

Me, during the next 30 minutes: This might even be pretty good. Nicely done!

Me, from minutes 60-90: Wow, this is actually the very best Omen film!

Me, during the last 30 minutes: search "Arkasha Stevenson fan club."

I too was pleasantly surprised at how pretty decent it was, but I have soooooooo many questions about the Evil Catholic Church's plan to bring people back into the fold. I mean, historically, you can't really control a demon/anti-christ, so I feel like not a lot of long term planning was done.

There's always a algorithm feed.

It's never free speech enough to just let everyone have their own dank corner of the platform to which others have to opt-in to see. There has to be an algorithm which 'suggests' speech you might be interested in and which places unsolicited, paid-for promoted speech in front of people who wouldn't ordinarily be aware of it.

Oh, man, the Kings are cross-hiring all kinds of people from Elsbeth so far. Office Blanke as one of the particle collider guides and Detective Smullen as the demon that Sheryl had to bring under control.

It's a shame that this is the last season, they have really found their groove of kinda sorta vaguely religion adjacent supernatural fucked up weirdness.

So yes: tired joke. But the mental gymnastics required to present it as some kind of attempt to shame immigrants or dishonor the wishes of people who change their name are... substantial. We could find something better to put that much effort into than assuming that kind of bad faith.

And to add on to Artw, I'm also not a fan of the Drumpf joke because it comes from a tired Resistance Dems mindset that supposes that once hypocrisy is exposed, villains will melt like the Wicked Witch after Dorothy douses her with a bucket of water. They don't. The far right doesn't do shame. They don't give a shit about hypocrisy. It means nothing to them in general. Ask MeFi post: Can I download a Google Workspace shared drive to a local HDD?
Yes rclone will backup Shared Drives in Google Workspace, and you shouldn't even need to do any scripting — just set up a cron job to run something like rclone sync your_remote:your_shared_drive /mnt/6TB/backup on schedule). rclone config walks you through the setup process. I have rclone jobs for various AWS and Backblaze backup tasks like this.

You'll need to decide if you want to use rclone sync or rclone copy. When a file is deleted in the shared drive, rclone... [more]

I know initial reception here on the Purple was lukewarm at best, but I feel--after mainlining all three seasons during late winter--that this is a legit fun ridiculous show. Unintentionally campy, utterly batshit, and yet somehow weirdly earnest. I dig it.

Shepherd, so much about crypto (especially NFTs) is confusing because it's such a baldfaced scam that when you explain what it is, people think there's something they don't understand. (I've read the books, but it's been years.) This series is beautiful. It was striking to me how chancy Tom's life is. The New York bank is suspicious, the police want to find him, there's always a scare on the trains, Dickie and Marge barely tolerate him... He's always burning bridges, never on solid ground.

I can't remember whether Tom's story about his parents' fatal boating accident is in the books at all, but it fits beautifully with his dreams about water, and... [more]

Good ole Randy Hillier, one of the asshats in one of the photos, is a well-known nutter in my neck of the woods. When the Freedom Convoy was at its peak, Randy was encouraging supporters to tie up 911 so that no one with a legit emergency could get through. I think he was finally ousted as mayor of his small town.

Kendrick has at least three more tracks to release on short order. They’re very dense with allusions, so wow that’s a lot of work prepped

Maybe the dude just always hated Drake and has been stewing on it for a while, but I like to think of Kendrick as Batman ready to neutralize the Justice League. Just sitting on a primed vault of absolutely ruthless takedowns of everyone in the industry, just in case he decides they need it.

I adored Detectorists for the same reasons. I convinced Dan Starkey to, as Strax, threaten to destroy them if they didn't eat their dinner.
