Jeff Daniels Loves His Guitar, And Talks About Other Things

So, Jeff Daniels recently visited the Kelly Clarkson Show [13m]. It was an entirely lovely and kind visit full of humanity. But the real surprise is his confession of the love of playing guitar, having written a zillion original songs, and his performance of a song about how the guitar is his best friend and he moves Clarkson to tears with his performance. It's entirely unexpected, and I'm sorry to have spoiled it for you, but how else could I have gotten you to watch this interview? [more inside]

Stereophonic on Broadway, it's an interesting story

Making Real Music for a Fake Band [43m] is from Slate's Decoder Ring podcast that digs pretty deep into a particular Broadway play that is the current Hot Ticket In Town [Playbill, Stereophonic]. It also digs into making real things for fake things. The episode looks at a multitude of excellent fake things you already know, and then the playwright David Adjmi and Will Butler formerly of Arcade Fire get into the show itself... A fictional Fleetwood Mac-esque band in the studio struggling to record an album of songs like this [1m45s] in the mid-Seventies. Here's a "retrospective trailer" looking back at its developmental run at Playwrights Horizons. [43s] [more inside]

Seth Rogan Loves Pot(tery)

About five years ago, Seth Rogen posted a picture on Instagram of seven rudimentary clay objects with the caption: “So maybe I joined a pottery studio so I could start making my own ashtrays.” Now, he’s taken his love for pottery to the next level by signing up as an executive producer for the competition show The Great Canadian Pottery Throw Down. He also appears throughout the series as a guest judge. Seth tells Tom Power what inspired his love of pottery, if he finds it therapeutic, and how the imagery and design around weed paraphernalia has changed since legalization. [31m]

Come to see Brian May's kitchen, stay for the lovely conversation!

I'm really not quite sure who Rosie Bennet is, but somehow she ended up sitting in Brian May's kitchen talking about all kinds of things. From fame to his astrophysics degree to AI and even a bit of music! It's a lovely gentle-voiced conversation that is one of the best musician interviews I've encountered lately! Ryan Gosling, America Ferrera, Barbie, BFI, Wow

I've watched a LOT of stuff related to Barbie. Panels and interviews and contrived videos... but I'm going to say that Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera on Barbie | BFI in conversation [40m] is the single most grounded, real-feeling conversation I've seen. Ryan and America seem to be sitting with a small group of friends talking about this experience they both went through, and it just feels so honest and bare and naked... Hard to describe, great to experience.

Bill Hader talks anxiety with Dan Harris

I don't know what I was expecting when I sat down to watch Bill Hader on Anxiety, Imposter Syndrome and Leaning Into Discomfort [1h20m], from the Ten Percent Happier podcast but what I got was a bare-bones confessional of a man who suffers deeply from anxiety even while he lives one of the most public lives in the country. I think I needed to watch this, and maybe you need to watch it also.

Beato + Saliers = Great Interview

Rick Beato sat down with the Emily Saliers half of Indigo Girls for a conversation about her decades of making and recording music: In the Room with Indigo Girls’ Emily Saliers [50m]. It's a free-wheeling talk that I, as a long-time IG fan, felt was revelatory and insightful. And there's a lot of joy happening here, too! Includes solo performance of song Look Long.

Rick and Daniel chatting for a while

If you like hearing all manner of music-making tidbits from one of the best, Rick Beato sat down with Daniel for a three-hour conversation. Everything is discussed from music personalities to recording techniques and equipment to songwriting to simply the joy of finding the vibe. Getting to know Julia

Despite the countless series I've seen her in, or the variety of profiles I've read about her across the decades, I've never really felt like I had any peg on Julia Louis-Dreyfus as a person. But she sat down for a 2-hour conversation with Pete Holmes for his podcast You Made It Weird, and across the first half-hour you can watch Pete peel away her defenses and by the end a more fully rounded portrait of her emerged. I really enjoyed this, much more than I expected going in.

How The Daily Show Sausage Gets Made, Leslie Jones Edition

In this week's Beyond The Scenes, Roy Wood Jr. sits down with her cowriter Lenny Marcus and the woman herself as Leslie Jones Reflects On Her Week As The Daily Show Host [56m]. There's a lot of really interesting, honest talk here about how comedy teams work, what kind of prep went into her week on the show, and then toward the end she sort of falls into a flow and things go off the rails.
