Harmontown Extended Cut

Look, Dan Harmon is a complicated person. Between Community and Rick And Morty he's done a lot. He's also incredibly self-destructive and willing to be open about that. His podcast was popular enough that he went out on a tour, and Harmontown [2014] is the film that documents that tour. This extended version runs 2h40m.

Into The Heart Of U2

As they become a legacy act, doing a lengthy residency in Las Vegas, and are becoming ever more deprecated across younger generations triggered mainly by their Apple Album Distribution debacle, U2 fans Bill See [Divine Weeks frontman] and Melody Muraca [early U2 Fanzine founder] have sat down to record the Into The Heart Of U2 Podcast [YouTube playlist link]. Album by album, tour by tour, with a lot of research and background information that I didn't know before... This might be the way for you to process your U2 fandom or your U2 mourning. Bill Hader talks anxiety with Dan Harris

I don't know what I was expecting when I sat down to watch Bill Hader on Anxiety, Imposter Syndrome and Leaning Into Discomfort [1h20m], from the Ten Percent Happier podcast but what I got was a bare-bones confessional of a man who suffers deeply from anxiety even while he lives one of the most public lives in the country. I think I needed to watch this, and maybe you need to watch it also.

The Rest Is Entertainment

So, Richard Osman and Marina Hyde have a fairly new podcast, The Rest Is Entertainment, and for their FIFTH episode, they did a mailbag that is really quite good. How panel shows REALLY work and discussing if WWE 'is actually entertainment' [32m] is less incendiary than its title might suggest, and is full of really interesting information. Mostly UK centric, but the generalized bits apply everywhere.

They complain we don't hit the Veep stuff early enough.

For their podcast Second In Command: A Veep Rewatch, Veep actors Matt Walsh [not THAT Matt Walsh, you're fine] and Timothy Simons just recently brought on Hugh Laurie OBE CBE for his first ever podcast interview! [1h14m] It's a wide ranging interview that goes well beyond Laurie's role on the show; a conversation that weaves in and out of awkward but is full of really genuine, delicious, encouraging human moments. Henry Potter + Biff Bannon = Donald Trump

George Bailey Was Never Born [podcast website with all episodes] is a 10 episode podcast which deep dives into the 1946 film It's A Wonderful Life [Wikipedia] through the lens of economic justice and populism, and how Mr. Potter seems to be winning in all aspects of THIS universe in which George Bailey was never born. The playlist on YouTube is in the wrong order but here is Episode 1: The Public’s Movie (1974-’92), and the rest can be found from there. Episodes average about 1 hour.

The Corruption Of Lindsey Graham

Like many, I've surmised that the reason Lindsey Graham went from Never Trump to Trump's Biggest Champion was because Donny had some kompromat on him. But after listening to the podcast from The Bulwark's Will Saletan, The Corruption Of Lindsey Graham [Bulwark link, podcast overview, individual episode pages are full of ancillary material, no listening links], I'm not so sure. He might have just sold his soul on principle. Here's Episode 1 of 7 "Graham's Moral Clarity" on YouTube [26m], with the full YouTube Playlist [annoyingly not in order] and the PDF book The Corruption Of Lindsey Graham by Will Saletan, upon which the podcast is based. The rest of the episodes on YouTube are listed below the fold. [more inside]

That made me go into hiding in my house, that's when the pills started

She isn't to everybody's taste, but Kathy Griffin has a lot to share. After the Trump Photo Incident* her career stopped cold. She's finally back with sold-out shows in Vegas and a new book. In her conversation with Jen Taub for the Booked Up podcast [1h6m, podcast page link], Kathy shares much about her career and life, including addiction and recovery and struggling to rebuild her career. It's an open and frank and very Kathy Griffin conversation that I greatly appreciated. CW: suicide discussion [more inside]

Jay Leno on Neal Brennan's The Blocks

Neal Brennan's interesting, introspective podcast The Blocks recently had Jay Leno as a guest [1h23m]. Brennan's podcast is focussed around discussing what the guests feel are things that have blocked them, held them back. I found this to be full of insights about Jay Leno that ran really counter to my assumed attitudes toward him, and I appreciated it.

Trevor Noah in conversation with Reid Hoffman about AI

One of the more thoughtful people on the planet, Trevor Noah has been thinking pretty deeply about AI and social media and other parts of our lives today. He spoke with Reid Hoffman, creator of LinkedIn, and his podcast co-host Aria Finger to share his thoughts [52m], and they're as surprisingly deep and insightful as you might expect from Noah. It wouldn't fit in the title, but I wanted to call this "Social media shouldn't be held accountable for what is posted on it, but what is pushed by it". That's a tiny bit of what Trevor thinks.

This special episode is in loving memory of her beautiful parents.

When she returned to her podcast after several weeks' absence, Sarah Silverman related the tale of both of her parents passing within a two week span. My Beautiful Parents [37m] is a eulogy and a tale of parents at the end of their lives. Content Warning for all the things: cancer, death, humor about death, photos and videos of sick old people... But what it all adds up to is a remarkable portrait of humanity and parents and children. And I appreciated it, and maybe you'll appreciate it, too.

Getting to know Julia

Despite the countless series I've seen her in, or the variety of profiles I've read about her across the decades, I've never really felt like I had any peg on Julia Louis-Dreyfus as a person. But she sat down for a 2-hour conversation with Pete Holmes for his podcast You Made It Weird, and across the first half-hour you can watch Pete peel away her defenses and by the end a more fully rounded portrait of her emerged. I really enjoyed this, much more than I expected going in.
