Bird Box (Abridged)
Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross scored the Netflix film Bird Box, and they've done a digital release of an abridged score available now. A full score on physical product will be available later. For now, they've put the track Outside on YouTube for everyone.
Shut up, already! Damn!
It's an album that nearly needs no introduction -- Prince's 1987 double masterwork Sign "☮︎" The Times [YT Playlist]. Born out of abandoned projects and alter egos, the final funky rocking sexy weird release could arguably be the best album of the 80s. Side A: Sign "☮︎" The Times [video] [BONUS: Nina Simone], Play In The Sunshine, Housequake, The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker [more inside]

A Very Spidey Christmas [11m30s] is not a Holiday album. It's not even a Holiday EP. It's hilarious. Performed by the original voices of Spiderman: Into The Spiderverse.
A final Holiday album post for 2018
December [40m] is the fourth album by pianist George Winston, released in 1982. Perfect for atmospheric reflection as we enter [Northern Hemisphere] Winter and our season of Celebrations. Perhaps the most famous Holiday album you've not yet heard. Happy Solstice! Side A: Thanksgiving; Jesus, Jesus, Rest Your Head; Joy; Prelude/Carol Of The Bells; Night -- Part One: Snow, Part Two: Midnight, Part Three: Minstrels [more inside]
Yes, I believe in a better world
The Moody Blues' final studio album in 2003 was, oddly enough a Holiday album [YT playlist ~42m]. December featured the core of the group (Haywood, Lodge, and Edge, still together since the 60s). It feels like it might tip over into kitsch at any moment, but always avoids it and ends up feeling more poignant than anything else. CD: Don't Need A Reindeer, December Snow, In The Quiet Of Christmas Morning (Bach 147), On This Christmas Day, Happy Xmas (War Is Over), A Winter's Tale, The Spirit Of Christmas, Yes I Believe, When A Child Is Born, White Christmas, In The Bleak Midwinter
Candle candle, are the children safe now?
Christmas carols with a twist, but not the twist you might expect. Tori Amos' 2009 release Midwinter Graces is both familiar and new, and is every single bit old-school Tori, symphonic and surprising. Recommended for those who love holiday music but who are sick of holiday music. CD: What Child, Nowell; Star Of Wonder; A Silent Night With You [video]; Candle: Coventry Carol; Holly, Ivy, And Rose; Harps Of Gold; Snow Angel; Jeanette, Isabella; Pink And Glitter; Emmanuel; Winter's Carol; Our New Year
One Weekend
The theme for Reno's Biggest Little Furcon in 2018 was Broadway Musicals. So, some furry musicians and writers came together to write a musical, over the internet, over the span of just a few months. Here's a documentary about that process -- Making A Musical Tail [25m] [more inside]
What they're up to, only Heaven knows!
20 years ago, Cyndi Lauper released her delightfully sensitive, playfully zydeco, also rather traditional [full album, 42m] sixth studio album, Merry Christmas... :P Have A Nice Life! It's mostly original songs with a few very strong covers or traditional carols mixed in. Quality stuff, IMO! (When has Cyndi ever NOT released quality stuff?) Side A: Home On Christmas Day, Early Christmas Morning, Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree, Christmas Conga, Minnie And Santa, Feels Like Christmas [more inside]
My parents own this, I own it, if I had kids, they'd probably own it too
1962 saw the release of a truly classic Holiday album -- The Glorious Sound of Christmas, from the Philadelphia Orchestra [44m]. Lush playing under Eugene Ormandy and creative arrangements by Arthur Harris lift the familiar carols well above most holiday fare that has come before or since. With the Temple University Concert Choir. Side A: Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, O Little Town Of Bethlehem, Joy To The World, Oh Holy Night, O Come O Come Emanuel, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Ave Maria [more inside]
A silver bowl of mints and some peanuts
Virginia-based Americana group Carbon Leaf created a holiday-season EP back in 2010. Whether it's winter weather, traditional family holiday parties, childhood holiday longings, or just being an adult at New Year's, Carbon Leaf probably has a song for you here. Christmas Child runs about 30 minutes total. Christmas Child, Red Punch Green Punch, Ice And Snow, Sutton's Reel, Ode To The Snow, Drifting, Christmas At Sea, Christmas Child (Instrumental), Toast To The New Year [more inside]
Spirit Of Love Will Always Connect You
Yes' Jon Anderson released his 4th solo album in 1985 -- the holiday-themed album 3 Ships. It's rather 80s, VERY Jon Anderson, and I think it's charming and fun with excellent flow across its runtime [Full Album (recommended), 39m15s]. One of the few holiday albums I might listen to in July. Side One: Save All Your Love, Easier Said Than Done [video], 3 Ships [video (lower quality)], Forest Of Fire, Ding Dong! Merrily On High, Save All Your Love (Reprise) [more inside]
Adam's quotable lyrics are all too long to fit here
Counting Crows made a big splash some 25 years ago with the release of their debut album August And Everything After. Bloody Good Bar Fight Song
Back in 2013, Carbon Leaf released Ghost Dragon Attacks Castle with no advance notice. As a fan who had been missing new output from them, my first listen was really thrilling. If you like rock-flavored Celtic-tinged music, maybe you'd like a first listen too. [YT playlist, 12 songs, annoying silence at the end of track two, sorry, not my fault]

No more monsters, I can breathe again
Kesha's new single, Praying, is worth a listen. Whether you've followed formerly Ke$ha's difficulties [lazy previously link] in the news over the past 5 years or not, this is something new. It's not what you might expect from the singer best known for Tik Tok and Timber. It's heartbreaking, actually. And gives me goosebumps. LennyLetter gives her space and freedom to talk about the new single.

Let's get a little dark with Amy Grant
Okay, so Amy Grant is a bit insecure on her first album 1977's Amy Grant, with the song I Know Better Now. Written by an angst-filled 17 year old who is couching her insecurity within her faith in Jesus, it's only one in a long line of songs Amy has written and/or recorded that show true struggle with being human in a difficult world. Twenty-something
Sometimes a music video completely recontextualizes the song. Pet Shop Boys' most recent single Twenty-something is one thing when you just hear the song, but the video makes it something else entirely.
