About

What's the deal with your nickname? How did you get it? If your nickname is self-explanatory, then tell everyone when you first started using the internet, and what was the first thing that made you say "wow, this isn't just a place for freaks after all?" Was it a website? Was it an email from a long-lost friend? Go on, spill it.

My nickname: Gudrun, a female given name that derives from Old Norse Guðrún. Gudrun or Kudrun is a figure in a Middle High German epic sometimes called the Gudrun Lied or the Kudrun Lied (different Gudruns are in Norse mythology, and various sagas.) It is a family name, and the name of the doctor who delivered me! (and I've been using some form of it online since the early days of email, since I don't have much imagination when it comes to internet handles....)

Background wise, I'm an anthropologist and longtime museum person.

"The tough-minded are content that differences should exist. They respect differences. Their goal is a world made safe for differences, where the United States may be American to the hilt without threatening the peace of the world, and France may be France, and Japan may be Japan on the same conditions." -Ruth Benedict, Anthropologist, 1946.

Fall

In the hall of the trees
In the glazed porcelain light
Music whimpers in cat cries
And flagstones follow the fencerows
into the night.

Pines float on my breath
Their cones hold rosy solitude,
clenched tight
And I follow the fencerows
into the night.
