About

What's the deal with your nickname? How did you get it? If your nickname is self-explanatory, then tell everyone when you first started using the internet, and what was the first thing that made you say "wow, this isn't just a place for freaks after all?" Was it a website? Was it an email from a long-lost friend? Go on, spill it.

I posted the following to Metatalk and it was deleted. Obviously, I'm right. Do what you can to get the word out.

Warning to all Mefites. What was discussed here and here, actually happened

Apparently, several months ago, Matt was contacted by a security agency and asked to turn over everything on his servers relating to Mefi and its membership--which he did.

The impression I got from my friend was that Matt would get in trouble if he talked about this. (I suspect this thread will disappear and, at least, those few of you who read this can guess the truth from that.)

So, I put this out there to the general membership because I can't be the only one to have heard about this. Who else knows about this and what can we do?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF:

1. Mefi has linked to sites that have had their servers or server logs taken, why do we automatically, naively assume that the same hasn't happened to Mefi?

2. Mefi members have made threats that elsewhere would result in a visit from men in black suits, why do we assume it hasn't happened here?

3. Why did it take so long for new user signups to come back?

4. Why is there now a $5 per user fee when mathowie once stated that he couldn't imagine charging for the use of Mefi? Server costs or attorney's fees? Use your common sense, people.

What's really going on, here? The answer is here if you really want it.
