About

What's the deal with your nickname? How did you get it? If your nickname is self-explanatory, then tell everyone when you first started using the internet, and what was the first thing that made you say "wow, this isn't just a place for freaks after all?" Was it a website? Was it an email from a long-lost friend? Go on, spill it.

Ark_light's nickname is derived from the B-52 bombings during the Vietnam War, also called Operation Arc Light. "Ark", as in the Ark of the Covenant also makes the nickname biblically enigmatic. Arc Light is referenced by Captain Willard in the movie, "Apocalypse Now”. This film is based on Joseph Conrad’s novella, “Heart of Darkness”, a story widely read in first year university English classes. In the story an Englishman named Marlow travels up river into the Congo Free State searching for a government ivory dealer named Kurtz. While on his journey up river Marlow is informed that Kurtz has gone “native”, in his pursuit of this man Marlow confronts the heart of darkness within himself and begins to perceive that morality and civility are neither clear-cut nor hierarchal. This book has been widely criticized for having major racially biased overtones and I agree with these criticisms. But, I think that the story itself is emblematic of the obscurity of its intended meaning. And I like that about it.
