About

What's the deal with your nickname? How did you get it? If your nickname is self-explanatory, then tell everyone when you first started using the internet, and what was the first thing that made you say "wow, this isn't just a place for freaks after all?" Was it a website? Was it an email from a long-lost friend? Go on, spill it.

Back in Metafilter's Paleozoic Era (somewhere around the mid-aughts) I had an account here under the name 'spoobnooble'. It's a made-up word. And then around 2011 I nuked the account because I thought I was done with Metafilter. Then about six months later I made a new account under the name 'spoobnooble II: electric bugaboo' (I stole the movie-sequel naming convention from someone named 'quonsar'; it was a funny idea, and I make no apologies for stealing it). Then in April 2020 I thought I might be done again with Metafilter, and I looked over my comment history and figured "and nothing of value (would be) lost", so I nuked my second account. It felt nice, to be honest: like quitting a job you didn't care about all that much when you already had enough money to live on regardless.

The main reason why I set up a third account was I wanted to continue the naming convention joke (I'm already thinking about what I would call a fourth account). Other than that, I kinda like checking in from time to time. I'm not sure I really belong here, but I did pay my admission to get in the club, so what the heck. Metafilter is a nice little bodega with a corner cafe that I hope will survive the relentless gentrification happening in this neighbourhood, and I'm happy to throw a little money its way, even if the other customers regard me suspiciously (if they even notice me at all).

Have a nice day.
