About

What's the deal with your nickname? How did you get it? If your nickname is self-explanatory, then tell everyone when you first started using the internet, and what was the first thing that made you say "wow, this isn't just a place for freaks after all?" Was it a website? Was it an email from a long-lost friend? Go on, spill it.

Interested in helping out with Postcards To Voters? I wrote up an intro/some tips on MetaTalk. The minimum is only 4 postcards. They need volunteers all year round.

My garden o' croutons

If you like animals or rainbows and are into customizing your MeFi experience, you might like these user scripts and styles I posted:
  • Show unicorn and narwhal buttons (with a bonus laser kitty picture on deleted posts), instead of the standard Post and Preview comment form buttons. This is an update to Rhomboid's wonderful original user script (shared with his permission). [Todo: post button for music subsite]
  • Show a hedgehog when going directly to a comment, instead of the standard arrow pointer. (You don't have to be logged in to use this!)
  • Surround your own comments with rainbows and clouds on your Recent Activity page
  • Show a cute little fish instead of the standard inline video player icon

Use them with the Greasemonkey add-on for Firefox, or the Tampermonkey extension for other browsers.

3 of the 4 above scripts are now available as user styles that will work with the Stylus extension (don't use Stylish). I'm going to move the styles away from userstyles.org and to the MeFiScripts github.

I did these for fun and to share them with the rest of the community. If you've enjoyed using any of them, please consider donating a few bucks directly to MetaFilter.

User scripts from Plutor that I updated - these are on the MeFiScripts Github:
  • Mefi Deleted Posts (Restyled) - Allows you to see deleted posts on the front page of MeFi/Ask/etc. I edited the styling to make the deletion reason stand out from the post: example image
  • MefiQuote (for Modern themes) - Makes it easier to quote a comment by adding customizable "quote" links

For the MeFi Music collaboration challenge (randomly assigned pairs) in January 2011, I worked on a version of "Leave Her, Johnny" with MeFi Music regular Karlos the Jackal. He did a wonderful job dealing with my tracks, adding interesting parts to the arrangement and mixing the overall song (I try not to pay attention to the parts where I messed up). :) Since then, I very much enjoyed recording "The Leaving of Liverpool" with billiebee, and "When the Curtains of Night" with not_on_display. What can I say - I feel lucky to have worked with such lovely talented people.

MeFi Music is a jewel of a community within the MeFi universe, and I will be forever thankful for the welcome and encouragement to get me recording again. Here's my comment from a neat MeFi Music Talk thread about why I record music.

The picture of 6 + 8 penguins on my profile is a thumbnail of this WPA Art Project poster (unfortunately there's no artist name on the LOC record).

I like rangefinder cameras, especially classic compact ones. "Rangefinder" was already taken as a MeFi username, along with some other choices. The "1.4" refers to a lens speed.

Found MetaFilter in 2003; got really hooked later thanks to AskMe.

The Best Post Contest is one of my favorite events on MetaFilter. Hat tip to ocherdraco, who originally started the category of "awesome woman or women doing awesome things" for the Best Post / MeFites Choice Contest in 2012. I thought it was a great idea and sponsored it from 2014-2020. It has been a highlight of my year.

Within that time, the category evolved into focusing more on not-so-famous women doing awesome things, with bonus consideration for diversity.

I often find myself looking for certain posts again, so this is a list of all the final announcements I made for each Awesome Women category contest (and a few other categories):

On another note, violinflu's answer in this "Name that classical tune!" thread never fails to crack me up, for different reasons. I probably never would have recognized that the bonus tune was from the same exact piece I had identified in the previous comment. It's a great example of arrangement and context completely changing my perception of the music.
