Not sure why this is weirding me out so much, but man... weird weird weird. I mean, is this even real? It's like that website that got posted a while ago of a random guy who holds a party every year and then does some amazing photoshops of famous people into all the photos milling into his friends. Yet I couldn't help but scroll through the whole thing.

I mean, why?
posted by Corduroy at 1:38 AM on May 28, 2011

I don't think it's weird that celebrities hang out together. They're all neighbors.

What was the deal with Bowie's face?

Captain EO, of course!

Any site which classifies Marilyn Manson as "awesome" loses credibility in my opinion. He's essentially Fred Durst with added Satanism.

I don't like his music either, but Marilyn Manson is a whole hell of a lot smarter than Fred Durst. Have you ever seen the man interviewed? He's thoughtful, well spoken, and clearly very intelligent.

photo grouping famous people without movie stars is awesome. also throw out age, as older famous people, resent any contact with the admiring public, while older movie stars garnish such attention.

Took the words right outta my mouth. I'd always tended to write him off as a shock-rocker with nothing real to say, but he had probably the best line in Bowling for Columbine

At least one of these is a photoshopped version of another famous picture.

This is a shame, since the real backstory of Elvis' attempt to get Tricky Dick to make him a "Federal Agent-At-Large" is more bizarre.

I like to believe that I live in a world where there are giant parties to which only all the B-list actors are invited, and they will hang out in an apartment that looks like it belongs to a twentysomething and drink cheap wine out of plastic cups while they dream of a time that they will grow up.

My only complaint is that some of these (i.e. the Quentin and Manson photo) seem more like "quick photo ops" and not hanging out. But maybe that's the beans talking.

It's not very interesting when it's just "famous actors hanging out together." I mean, that's what they do, right? Hell, walk around the Academy Awards banquet and you're sure to get some interesting groupings, but since they're all actors who gives a shit? Except for these two. So... much... beauty...

Why is Audrey Hepburn trying to get a deer to drink beer?

It was her pet deer, Pip. And she was probably kidding.

I find that the photos taken at movie shoots are less interesting than other more random ones. It's kind of obvious that there would be pictures of Audrey Hepburn with Anthony Perkins or Fred Astaire, less so one of Chaplin with Einstein.

If I remember correctly, in this video the reason he's taking off a jacket in the beginning is because while he was being interviewed the network wouldn't let him be shirtless, but they let him take it off for the performance.

I would have agreed in a heartbeat until I heard Marilyn's cover of the theme from Nightmare Before Christmas. It fully qualifies as awesome and IMHO cuts the original (which is very, very good.) I can't remember ever hearing a better match between artist and material.

It's weird. Having grown up in Los Angeles and now working in a place that's a bit of a celebrity magnet, I totally expect that people who are famous hang out together, and it's weird to me that these pictures are a thing that someone would create a tumblr about. Movie stars, famous intellectuals, politicians, and world-class humanitarians have many things in common and are invited to a lot of the same events. It's trivial to take a picture of them together. It's not as though all of these photos are of people chilling at each other's houses. They're at awards ceremonies and associated afterparties, fundraisers, and work. Of course the same people are going to all these things. The really surprising thing is that when we see these celebrities in photos they're usually by themselves rather than with other famous people.

I do have to say, though, the one of Sophia Loren eyeing Jayne Mansfield's rack was pretty classic.

Celebrity gawkerism aside, there are some truly magnificent photographs in this set. Some favorite images: John Belushi and Chevy Chase (seems staged, but I don't care); Ella Fitzgerald performing in front of Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman (I'd pay cash money for a print of that); Audrey Hepburn talking to Edith Head (Edith Head!!).

Cool post. I admit I was riveted -- and equally squicked out by Karl Lagerfeld. And I'm glad David Bowie put some weight back on, cos DAMN.
posted by flyingsquirrel at 9:35 PM on May 28, 2011

I guess the novelty is that we wouldn't expect great humanitarians + princesses + rappers (or whatever combo) hanging out together voluntarily even if they are at the same events?

Also, most of us live in nowheresville and thus this is a novelty to us all to see random combinations of cool people we like hanging out with each other.
