I remember in 1990, when Alex Rocco won the Emmy for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series (for The Famous Teddy Z), Woody Harrelson WAS PISSED AND DID NOT MAKE ANY SORT OF ATTEMPT TO HIDE IT.

I can't, however, remember what I had for lunch yesterday

Meryl Streep wins the Oscar for make-believe happiest loser.

Why the one stillframe of Ellen Burstyn? Is that a joke? Of some kind? That I don't get?

I think maybe she was in absentia.

Every shot of Jessica Lange not winning (I don't know if there's more than one) is an exercise in gorgeous civility with a sideways glance to the person sitting next to her and a carefully whispered "That bitch...".

Jeez, Sally Kirkland: my favorite reaction. I was hoping to see it here. Her hatred of Cher is palpable.

Nothing will ever top Slash and Duff at the 1990 American Music Awards.

After a few rows I started to find this just as confusing as watching in real time.

And Bill Murray gives a slow blink in acknowledgement that someone else one.

(And awww at 10-year-old Anna Paquin's reaction!)

Meanwhile, Streep looks like she had money on Cher.

Oh I disagree. Amy Winehouse's Grammy knocks the wind out of her.

Love Anna Paquin's joyous reaction to winning. Equally love the sheer world-weariness of Burt Reynolds' reaction to losing.

That reaction at 0:11... even the youtube comments got it right. ("THAT is the look of when dreams come true.")

That reaction at 0:11.

The fact that she got to live that moment somehow made her death easier for me to take.

The Oscars must be this weekend...
Some of those hair styles make it appear that the owner got a shot of electricity...

The row with Dreyfuss, Hopkins and Cage is hypnotic. It's begging for a Steve Reich score.

They could just use a picture of Meryl Streep in dictionaries to define the word "class".

Marisa Tomei was a big surprise to everyone, clearly. No one could get excited about Gwyneth (except Meryl Streep, of course).

But it's actually the Jodie Foster win that inspired the most obvious negative reactions from the other nominees. Weird. Or maybe it's just that Streep wasn't nominated that year.

"Meanwhile, Streep looks like she had money on Cher."

Yeah, and Anne Hathaway seems weirdly thrilled that Kate Winslet won, too. Although I'm wondering if the ubiquitous headbang might not be a good way to disguise a "dammit!" as a something that becomes a "yes!".

That year that Robin Williams won best supporting actor for his role in "Good Will Hunting" over Burt Reynolds in "Boogie Nights" and Robert Forster in "Jackie Brown" was a fucking travesty.

Talia Shire ("Rocky") losing to Faye Dunaway ("Network") seems like the most disgruntled in the gallery. As far as I'm concerned, anyone being nominated for Rocky was an error, so I'm not sympathetic.

I bet Judy Davis sneered a bit more when Sally Field had her "You love me! You really love me!" outburst.

I don't know guys. I've been watching this for about 20 minutes, and I really think that Kathy Bates' reaction to Catherine Z-J winning has got to be the most captivating.

Watch it by itself. You would never, ever think this was a reaction to losing an award. But then, when you look in context, you can almost hear a Michael Bluthian "Her?"

anyone being nominated for Rocky was an error

"Sylvester Stallone becomes the third person to be nominated for both acting and writing in the same year, following Charles Chaplin for The Great Dictator (1940) and Orson Welles for Citizen Kane (1941)." [imdb]

I've been referring to Stallone as "Academy Award winning screenwriter Sylvester Stallone" for a few years now, and am embarrassed to find out that he didn't actually win.

DINGO'S GOT MY OSCAR

Anna Paquin's reaction was one of those moments that just stick with you - her acceptance speech was just as adorable.

(Though I still think Rosie Perez should have won - that performance was searing)

The dude was robbed, man. That Oscar should have been his. I was just as pissed myself.

In a tangent: I've been looking for a clip of this, so if anyone knows of one let me know - does anyone remember in '99 when Gods and Monsters won for best adapted screenplay? The camera didn't just get Bill Condon's reaction shot -- the cameras kept cutting back to show how Brendan Fraser, Lynn Redgrave and Sir Ian McKellan were reacting; the three of them were absolutely beside themselves with joy. I remember in the middle of Condon's speech they cut back to show Brendan, Lynn, and Ian all sitting huddled together in their seats, hugging each other and beaming as they watched. I think that's actually what made me finally see the film (I hadn't yet) - a cast and crew that were that close, I figured, had probably made something really special.

Judy Davis seems to me the type of person who could and would sneer at pretty much anything you'd set in front of her, up to and including a mirror.

I wish I was Judy Davis.

The Brits and non-Americans seem to know how to accept an Oscar with any one or combinations of the following: grace, humor, articulate appreciation, humility, brevity and wit. Even Russell Crowe won beautifully.

The Americans who win, especially in the main categories, inevitably cause me no end of very uncomfortable moments and all the speeches seem cringeworthy but I watch anyway and look forward to the Oscars with much excitement and pleasure. I like the red carpet fashion show and the Foreign Film award speeches the best. Well, actually, I like the movies the best.
