I remember in 1990, when Alex Rocco won the Emmy for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series (for The Famous Teddy Z), Woody Harrelson WAS PISSED AND DID NOT MAKE ANY SORT OF ATTEMPT TO HIDE IT.

Marisa Tomei was a big surprise to everyone, clearly. No one could get excited about Gwyneth (except Meryl Streep, of course).
But it's actually the Jodie Foster win that inspired the most obvious negative reactions from the other nominees. Weird. Or maybe it's just that Streep wasn't nominated that year.

Yeah, and Anne Hathaway seems weirdly thrilled that Kate Winslet won, too. Although I'm wondering if the ubiquitous headbang might not be a good way to disguise a "dammit!" as a something that becomes a "yes!".

I don't know guys. I've been watching this for about 20 minutes, and I really think that Kathy Bates' reaction to Catherine Z-J winning has got to be the most captivating.
Watch it by itself. You would never, ever think this was a reaction to losing an award. But then, when you look in context, you can almost hear a Michael Bluthian "Her?"

Anna Paquin's reaction was one of those moments that just stick with you - her acceptance speech was just as adorable.
(Though I still think Rosie Perez should have won - that performance was searing)

In a tangent: I've been looking for a clip of this, so if anyone knows of one let me know - does anyone remember in '99 when Gods and Monsters won for best adapted screenplay? The camera didn't just get Bill Condon's reaction shot -- the cameras kept cutting back to show how Brendan Fraser, Lynn Redgrave and Sir Ian McKellan were reacting; the three of them were absolutely beside themselves with joy. I remember in the middle of Condon's speech they cut back to show Brendan, Lynn, and Ian all sitting huddled together in their seats, hugging each other and beaming as they watched. I think that's actually what made me finally see the film (I hadn't yet) - a cast and crew that were that close, I figured, had probably made something really special.

Judy Davis seems to me the type of person who could and would sneer at pretty much anything you'd set in front of her, up to and including a mirror.

The Brits and non-Americans seem to know how to accept an Oscar with any one or combinations of the following: grace, humor, articulate appreciation, humility, brevity and wit. Even Russell Crowe won beautifully.
The Americans who win, especially in the main categories, inevitably cause me no end of very uncomfortable moments and all the speeches seem cringeworthy but I watch anyway and look forward to the Oscars with much excitement and pleasure. I like the red carpet fashion show and the Foreign Film award speeches the best. Well, actually, I like the movies the best.
