w3sp Defrag

DeFRaG is a mod for Quake 3 that focuses on trickjumping and completing timed courses. One of the best defrag players in the world, w3sp, is the focus of two great defrag videos: w3sp strafes and f33l

These are great. Reminds me of a Mirror's Edge speed run, but about 100 times faster, crazier, and more hardcore. The amount of skill on display here is staggering, and I don't even want to imagine how many hours of practice it takes to get to that level.

The music in "w3sp strafes" is Eyen by Plaid, not Charlie Clouser.

(In case you liked it and wanted to buy it)

I keep hoping twitch FPS gaming will make a big comeback. At least there's still the ocassional game to be had over on Quake Live.

Come play Quake Live - the last of the great games of skill. And it's free :)

These days games are all about form and content but Quake III / Quake Live is pure 100% function.

Oh I should also mention that some of this is done using CPMA, which is a mod for Quake 3 that allows more movement variety (it will usually say during the video if it's in CPMA or Quake 3)

The difference is that CPMA has:

bunnyhopping - this was present in Quakeworld and Quake 2 was but replaced by strafe jumping in Quake 3
rampsliding - what it sounds like, moving at great speed will allow you to travel 'up' ramps
trimping - jumping at the end of a ramp or some kind of ledge will propel you to a greater height

I'll do a post on Quake 3 frag videos later, there are some really great ones out there

The other difference with CPMA, which is what makes it really crazy, is that you can redirect your momentum with the mouse. That is, if you look around a corner while jumping at it, you will actually go around the corner in mid air. That allows you to maintain the speed you build up no matter what path you take.

war§ow is an indie FPS made out of the physics quirks that its developers found most interesting. It makes for some pretty interesting trickruns.

Warsow is also cel shaded, and looks amazing.

Listening to the constant grunting in that warsow video made me feel out of breath.

Watching that first video link made me happy in pretty much the same way playing Jet Grind Radio (Future) made me happy. The endless glee in moving through the game space in transgressive ways - in JGR the "transgressive" ways are largely the ones the game encourages you to learn and link together, of course, while "flying sideways along a wall by the knockback from your plasma gun" is an accidental emergent property of the game, and probably more transgressive for that.

It almost makes me want to try and learn to play FPSs, a genre I've previously loathed. With the exception of "Portal", which is also about the joy of moving around a space in strange ways.

War§ow looks interesting. Does it come with any kind of tutorial that teaches you how to do these crazy movements, or are you just expected to know how to do the from playing Quake your whole life? Because I am sure I would get my ass stomped so hard in competition that "p0wned" doesn't even begin to cover it.

The w3sp strafes link left me nostalgic for SkyRoads.

I always wondered where the pleasure comes from with this type of modding activity. Never knew if it's the playing, programming, or social aspect of sharing and seeing what can be done with a particular 3d engine that gets people involved.

I guess I can see it as being a form of art, and people that mod are expressing themselves through this medium.

Yes.

Come play Quake Live - the last of the great games of skill. And it's free :)

Better yet, play OpenArena, the open source variant of Quake III Arena.

Well, no, it is not free in any way that matters to people who've been playing the game for more than a decade. Don't get me started again on the shitty cynical cashgrab that is Quake Live (see Exhibit 3).

I still love Quake 3 and RA3 with all my heart, and so disappointed what has been done with the legacy.

I do understand wanting to love Quake Live. I feel it. But it just makes me angry.

There are some amazing ones, definitely. High machinima art, for back in the day; pure deathmatch porn for us old school rocketjumpers.

From a cursory glance, it looks like more people play OpenArena than Unreal Tournament 3. That's kinda sad, especially considering that UT3 is (in my opinion) a great game.

Very impressive, but I kept being distracted by the guy whispering "Ryan" every time he jumped.

The usual advice for warsow "tutorials" is to spectate, and type cg_showpressedkeys into the console. That will let you see exactly what someone who knows better is doing at a given place and millisecond.

I'm not sure what your issue with Quake Live is. It is a much better game than Vanilla Quake 3 - it's better balanced, it has better netcode, UI, settings and playing on smaller servers (with some idea of server skill level) is a much better Quake experience than what Quake 3 used to be.

I do miss custom maps, but I don't think mods are a big deal. The main mods people played were OSP, RA3 and CPMA. OSP and RA3 aren't really needed in Quake Live since it has most of their features. I do miss CPMA and Defrag, obviously, but I don't think it's a big deal.

I also don't see how it's a "cynical cashgrab" considering the subscription is something like 25$ a year and it doesn't affect the gameplay at all. I'm not actually sure how it could be cynical anyway, since no one was playing Quake 3 in 2009, and it's such a niche game

The article doesn't seem to understand that id makes very little money from the game and developing, hosting the website and servers and supporting the game is expensive. Of course I would have preferred if they released Quake Live as a standalone game on Steam for 15$ or whatever, but experience shows that these kinds of games lose their playerbase extremely quickly if they're not free to play

'The article' is a rant that I wrote, which, you know, is why I linked to it. I think there were a couple of others on FGEC where I spent way too much time and energy being volubly disappointed, but I AM AN EXTREMELY IMPORTANT BUSINESSMAN WITH NO TIME TO WASTE, so: google that crap or something for the whole argument, if you feel inclined, I guess.

Regardless: Zenimax-subsidiary id can suck my salty dank downbelows. And again, for emphasis: fuck Quake Live.

It was an awfully long rant to say that they don't give people enough maps for free. Anyway, they absolutely did have adds up on those in game billboard surfaces. For all of two weeks or so, I think.

Most of the commercials they play before launching a game are targeted at women. Obviously there aren't that many women playing, so they must be scrapping the bottom of the barrel for any revenue they can find. I'll take that as proof that ad support isn't going to work..

Yeah, that was totally my point, well spotted. You sure schooled me there, man.

It wasn't until the final sequence of f33l that I noticed how much skill goes into this.
