Oh wow, I love these. I'd totally put them in my yard.

Though all of my influence for landscaping comes directly from that one scene in Harriet the Spy.

Reminiscent of the work of Starr
Kempf and very lovely; thanks for the post.

This guy builds a few glittery things, and they call him an artist.
Me, I dedicate my career to building kinetic sculptures which also generate useful power, and they call me [redacted].

(I keed, I keed. These are neat. I like his kitchen with the huge lathe by the window…)

Lovely! Wish I had money and space for one! When I was little, kinetic sculpture was quite popular and it always delighted me to happen upon art that moved, especially in neither simple nor totally random ways; I would stare at it trying to find the patterns underlying the complex motion.

I hope kinetic sculpture makes a comeback, especially the more intricate types. It can be very hypnotic and soothing, and I think it would be great in places like airports where people can be simultaneously rushed and frazzled, yet have to sit around and kill time. (Once I flew out of an airport which had a marvelously complicated clock-sculpture thingy - I kept hoping the flight would be delayed so I could watch the sculpture some more!)

Thanks for another neat post, homunculus.

I discovered these randomly a few years ago when visiting Orcas Island and driving around with a friend. We found Howe's house and workshop, and the grounds full of various sculptures. We did not see the artist himself, but we saw his dog hanging out in the studio. I took some videos with my point and shoot camera, which I put up on YouTube, please accept my apologies for the fact that they are all sideways.

Thank you, homunculus - these are mesmerizing ... I love them all but am totally smitten by About Face.

That Bob Potts link falls right into the uncanny valley of mechanisms for me. Either they're subtly asymmetric or it looks like it's going to be bio-mimetic and almost gets there and then veers totally off track. It almost seems like they were made to drive engineers like me crazy.
Maybe they were.
