Some how this sparked a train of thought, and the internet proves I'm not the only one: MLP is a reboot of Sailor Moon.

I wonder if this is somehow related to Lady Gaga's recent InuYasha cosplay.

If MLP were actually a reboot of Sailor Moon, Pinky Pie would be the main character and Twilight Sparkle would be the first friend she makes, and Fluttershy wouldn't be a character. (I love this game though! Apple Jack is Jupiter, Rarity is Venus, Rainbow Dash is Mars!)

I've seen it written up elsewhere, and hell if I can find it right now, but an essay or blog post about how the American girls who watched Sailor Moon while in high school in the late 1990s are now women in the animation industry and writing their own shows. So MLP is not so much a reboot of Sailor Moon as it is the influences on full display. in Japan, Sailor Moon's trope of magical girls with social lives and cascades of baddies to fight is a couple generations old (anime trainspotters will eagerly point this out) so the show is influential but not necessarily ground breaking there, while in America, it's still a novel concept. MLP is mostly about girls developing their skills and the social circles they belong to, but there's not much in the way of villains from alternate universes to fend off, so I guess there's still room for more cartoons where that came from.
And if I could tag comments I would tag this comment "good lord I'm writing critical analyses of My Little Pony's antecedents in Sailor Moon what has my life come to."

pxe2000 if you mean me, nah! I'm a former Sailor Senshi (aka forum mod, Sailor Fraise at your service ;) ) of grep sailormoon* fame, and the second video was shared amongst our friend group. I came across the first one as a related video.
ardgedee I am loving that theory.

You know what they say about great minds, right?

Gummy's such a horrible fit for Luna though. I guess Madame le Flour will have to do in a pinch.

While looking for some techno/trance in 2006 I happened across the German music for Sailor Moon (done by the custom-made band Super Moonies).
A few of those songs are now guilty pleasures of mine. I've never watched the show, I just like these a lot:
Silber Millenium, Sailor Moon's Welt, and the Sailor Moon Megamix by a fan.

The Sailor Moon universe will not be complete until somebody creates a visualization for "Sailor Crab Nebula".

Every single celestial object has already got a senshi OC. Including the Crab Nebula.
It's fun! Make your own!
I just made Sailor ISON, as inspired by today's Astronomy Picture Of the Day. This game has kept me occupied... good lord, numerous times over the past 15 years.

I'm starting to think I imagined it, because some searching is drawing a blank. It might have been a passing remark in some damn place or another.

Man, I loved these doofuses when I was a kid. They're basically like the Harry and the Potters of Sailor Moon. Their marketing was good enough that I begged my parents for this CD as a birthday present, but there were only three songs by them on the whole CD (and two original J-pop songs that I still have in my iTunes today), and the rest were dumb "actual" "pop" "songs". 10-year-Phire was very bitter about the whole thing, and never bought a CD again*. In retrospect, that album wasn't too bad of a compilation after all.
Anyway, Super Moonies, memories, is what I'm saying.
*Technically true, but it had nothing to do with the Super Moonies' betrayal. Napster happened.
