First of all - it's YY-Zed. And second of all - no, I can't get it. It's impossible.

Every household should come pre-equipped with a Minimoog.

Oops. You beat me, Alonzo. (This iPad keyboard is way too slow on the draw.)

bondcliff: " First of all - it's YY-Zed. And second of all - no, I can't get it. It's impossible."

So happy to see you taking time out of your genius-murdering schedule to slobber over some Canadian tub thumper. Not that he could hold a candle to real talent -- like... like Gene Krupa! or Buddy Rich! Now there were real drummers.

Yeah, that puppet has mad chops, but in your heart, you know he's still going to fuck your girlfriend.

Well, I can't even play that on my regular drum set. So the intersection of "drummers who can play Tom Sawyer note for note" and "puppeteers who can control a puppet to do that on a mini drum kit" is like ... one guy apparently. Amazing.

Also the comments are predictably eye-rolling:

The new drummer for Rush is awesome, even if his playing is a bit wooden.

Yeah, but Neil Peart sucks

This is the pinnacle of human achievement. I used to think it was Celery Man, but it is this.

I love that Freaks and Geeks bit. And I actually learned something from the comments there - apparently "Neil Peart sucks" is a total in-joke by the show and the actor (Joe Flaherty). From Flaherty's Wikipedia entry (Count Floyd is a character Joe Flaherty played on SCTV):

During the Grace Under Pressure tour by Rush, a video played on the rear screen of Count Floyd introducing "The Weapon", “a scary song with real special effects” which could only be enjoyed if the listener was wearing 3D glasses. 3D glasses were actually given to the fans during the Toronto shows of the tour, most likely because these shows were filmed for the Grace Under Pressure tour video. An edited audio portion of the Count Floyd introduction was included on the single version of "The Weapon" that actually appeared on Rush’s Signals release of 1982.

As I was watching this, I thought to myself, "surely there's no way the puppet will be able to nail those fills that occur about two-thirds of the way in." Well, you proved me wrong, puppet. You proved me wrong.

Also, his little splash cymbal in front is so cute. And extra points for accuracy for going through the trouble of making a puppet-sized china cymbal.

This is a way better Canadian puppet than Conky.

Ok, so the Ven diagram of this is drummers who make puppets who are also fans of Rush.

Surprisingly I find myself out of that set and each of those three sets individually.

I was guessing this would take 8, maybe 9, comments to get to "Do YYZ!" But no, TheWhiteSkull went there on post number one.

Thank you, MetaFilter, for again over delivering on my expectations and needs. Now where is that video?

And just saying, if Chops wants to take a stab at Moby Dick, I'd be down. Even the Dred Zep version. By down I mean I'd watch the full thing. Probably high. Maybe not, but probably.

This just transported me to a shag rug carpeted wood paneled basement with black-light velvet posters, a stack of records and a turntable with a smoked plexiglass cover in a suburb of Toronto. Alas I had no jean jacket and my hair is short so I had to come back.

That made me smile the entire time.

Weirdly, I never much cared for Rush one way or the other -- loving the rock and the roll and being Canadian and all as I was -- back in the days of my youth, when they were pretty much having their heyday, but as I approach my dotage I genuinely love them now. Even with the silly silk kimonos and Peartian-AynRand nonsense.

I think a big part of it was watching this documentary (and especially the bonus shorts (which may not be on Youtube), which are just them hanging around drinking wine and being goofballs, or taking the camera crew on tours of their old highschool and neighbourhoods) a few years ago that made me love them. Such nice guys, so quintessentially Canadian.
