When you play the World Cup, you win....or you go home.

16 teams remain in the FIFA 2015 Women's World Cup as we enter the knockout stages. Let's review the 16 survivors, how they got there, and how far they might go.

But first...a nod to those who have gone.

#17 Thailand
#18 Costa Rica
#19 New Zealand
#20 Spain
#21 Nigeria
#22 Mexico
#23 Ivory Coast
#24 Ecuador

And now. The 16 who remain. In bracket order. My predictions will stop at the semi-finals.

1) China (Group A runner up)

How they got here: Defense against Canada, a surprising blitz against the Netherlands, and then, well, two frank gifts from the ref against New Zealand.

Issues: Historically, China has never beaten an opponent from CONCACAF, and they almost certainly have to do that to reach the Semifinals.

How far will they go: They play the lowest ranked team left in the tournament (you'll meet them next). Then they play the 2nd highest ranked team in the tournament.

Prediction: Out in Quarterfinals.

2) Cameroon (Group C runner-up)

How they got here: Beat the (bleep) out of Ecuador, then beat Switzerland, job done. Then almost drew Japan. Hey! Only the 2nd African team to qualify, first African team to qualify on more than 50% points.

Issues: No consistency. One minute, they're brilliant. Next minute, they're playing like five year olds. Against teams like Germany and the US, that will get punished fast.

How far will they go: They're still the lowest ranked team in the 16. They could beat China. They won't beat the US. I don't think they'll beat China.

Prediction: Out in Round of 16.

3) United States (Won Group A)

How they got here: Beat Australia, Tied Sweden, Beat Nigeria. But that simplifies a story that should have been that simple. The USWNT is normally a very simple thing -- a blistering attack that scores goal after goal, but is a little shaky on defense. This year's model had a very shaky midfield, an offense that never really got going in two games, and a rock solid defense.

Issues: The US midfield, right now, is a gaping hole, saved only by the brilliant back four and the best goaltender in the game. A lot of the offensive woes can also be linked to the poor midfield play. Where are the US midfielders? Alas, most of the best are at home!

How far will they go: Unlike the Group Stage, where they played in the hardest group by far, the USA gets a cakewalk to the semifinal.

Prediction: Semifinalist+

4) Columbia (Third place in Group F)

How they got here: Beat France, the Group F seed and ranked third in the world, 2-0. That means "not a pushover." Tied Mexico. Lost to England.

Issues: Discipline. One, they get chippy, and two, that has cost them badly, they play without their starting goalkeeper, suspended for the USA match.

Prediction: out in the Round of 16.

5) Germany (Won Group B)

How they got there: Beating the (bleep) out of the Ivory Coast, tying Norway, beating Thailand. And, it's Germany. They do this. Ranked #1 in the world.

Issues: Arguably, Norway found that you can attack them deep, and the team who loves the fast deep attack is the US. While Germany is good at Goalkeepers, it is really their weakest spot - but note, in this case, that means a B- grade. Germany is a really solid team.

Finally, though, where the US had the hard fight in the group stage, Germany has the harder fight in the knockouts. It is possible that Germany will have to Sweden (#5), France (#3), the US (#2) to reach the Final. Germany is probably the favorite to win the cup -- but they're going to have to prove they've earned it.

Prediction: Semifinal+. If you have to pick one team to win it all, pick Germany.

6) Sweden (Group D third place)

How they got here: By the skin of their bright nordic teeth! Ranked fifth in the world, controversially not seeded, and then, by luck of the draw, dropped into the same group as the US to create the Group of Death, they promptly came to Canada and tied Nigeria? Tying the US wasn't shameful at all, but then tying Australia put them in a very bad place, and it wasn't until the end of the very last match that Sweden was assured that they'd made it in.

Issues: HELLO SWEDEN WHERE ARE YOU? DID YOU GET OFF THE PLANE? Maybe they were taken over by pod people.

How far will they go: Depends. The real Swedish Team could beat Germany. The Pod People? Not a hope with Hel.

Prediction: Real Sweden? Maybe Semifinal+. Pod People? Out in Round of 16.

7. France (Won Group F)

How they got here: Beat England, lost to Columbia WAIT WHAT? Hold on, I'll be back, I need coffee, I must have misread that. (back). No, seriously, it was helped by a couple of bad calls, but Columbia played marvelously and it was the upset of the tournament. France bounced back by beating the (bleep) out of Mexico and making sure England couldn't catch them on goal differential. Ranked #3 in the world.

Issues: That Columbia loss. France was on a real tear, including having beaten Germany in a friendly, and looked unbeatable. That game shook them. Otherwise, they're solid, and a real contender to win.

Prediction: Semifinal plus.

8. South Korea (Group E Runner Up)

How they got here: Lost to Brazil, tied Costa Rica, sent in a cross to Spain, then the Spanish Goalkeeper misread the cross and it went in. Three points, advance.

Issues: Very little experience. Very short goalkeeper, and height is a real factor in the sport in general and goalkeeping in particular -- Sweden, Germany and the US are know for both good goaltenders and tall women and this is *not* unrelated.

How far will they go: How far is the airport? Columbia upset the Blues. South Korea won't.

Prediction: Out in the round of 16.

9. Brazil (Won group E)

How did they win: Easily. Scored goals. Didn't concede any. THE ARISTOCRATS. Of course, this was the easiest group in the world for Brazil. They have the best player in the world -- Marta. Imagine combining a superb striker, a superb winger, and a superb attacking midfielder. That's Marta. The USWNT two worst defeats happened because Marta decided to power up.

Issues: Untested, really, this World Cup. Discipline can be an issue for Brazil as well, get them chippy and they can card themselves into trouble, though the women's side is not nearly as bad about this as the men's side is -- see Neymar just getting himself tossed out of the Copa América, which pretty much ends Brazil's chances there.

How far will they go: On one hand, Marta. On the other hand, Japan. On the gripping hand, that's it -- if they can beat Japan, the next hardest team between them and the semifinals is Canada.

Prediction: Semifinals+ (but I could be wrong, because Japan.)

10. Australia (2nd in Group D)

How they got here: Lost to the US, Beat Nigeria, Tied Sweden. Well, they seemed to think they beat the US. Plucky little bastards, aren't they?

Issues. Not a lot of experience in the game. Very young. About to be fed to Marta. I'll be honest, they played well, and as a big USWNT supporter, I loved that whole "They ain't very good" they wrote after getting beaten 3-1. Good on ya, mates. scoreboard. I suspect in a few years, the Aussies are going to become a force in the game. But this is not that year.

Prediction: Out in the round of 16.

11. Japan (Won Group C, defending Champions)

How they got here: Quietly. No muss, no fuss, won three games, and unlike the other two teams in the group, when it came to Ecuador, they scored one goal and parked the bus. They didn't need to rack up a dozen goals. They could have, but they didn't, because that is not their way.

Issues: Not tested at all in the group stages, so we don't know if they have any real issues or not. But they are a very very good team, and they are very resilient.

How far will they go: Depends. Can they handle Marta? In their championship run, they never faced her -- but they took down Germany. This time, the only way to the cup is through Brazil.

Prediction: Semifinal+ (but I could be wrong, because Brazil. One of the two...)

12. The Netherlands (Group A third place)

How they got there: Barely. Beat New Zealand, Lost to China, Tied Canada. Also benefited from the poorly called New Zealand/China match.

Issues: Scored two goals. TWO. That normally gets you nowhere fast. And it'll get them nowhere faster, doubly so when you get to play Japan in your first match!

How far will they go. About 90 minutes, give or take.

Prediction: Out in the round of 16.

13. Norway (Group B runner up)

How they got here: Don't let that runner up fool you. Norway is a quality team, the runner up comes from being in the same group as Germany, and the reason Germany didn't win three games is Norway. Beat Thailand, Tied Germany, Beat Ivory Coast.

Issues: Not many. And, if you wanted to pull for a sleeper team, here's a really good one. Tested once and found to hold with that tie against Germany, and in a bracket position to make a good run.

How far will they go: Given what they face (you'll see in a moment) I have to go long with them. I honestly think they're not going to fall until they face one of the giants -- and maybe not even then. So, even though they're ranked #11th, and they'll face a higher ranked team, I'm going...

Prediction: Semifinal+ (!)

14. England (Group E runner up)

How they got here: Lost to France (shame!) Beat Mexico, beat Columbia. The England FA has made a large investment in improving the women's game, and...it appears to be working. Compared to four years ago, this is a much better team.

Issues: England plays a reactive game. Norway likes that. I don't think they can beat them. If they do beat them, I think that England can become the sleeper that I'm predicting Norway to be. Midfield is weak, goalkeeping is a little weak, offense is better than you think they are.

How far will they go: I just don't think they have the one extra step they need to beat Norway. This is a plucky team that has improved immensley, and while I would love for them to win and make a deep run, I just don't think they will. So, alas, with a deep sigh, I must say...

Prediction: Out in the round of 16. (sniff)

15. Canada (Won Group A)

How they got there: Unimpressively. Good: Won the group. Bad: WITH TWO GOALS. Sneaking in as a third place team with two goals? Fine. WINNING THE GROUP? Yeah, that's not a good sign. Worse, one of them was a penalty. So, Canada may have the politest offense, but that's a really bad thing. They've only given up one goal, so either they have a good defense, or they were in a weak group. Maybe both?

Issues: Offense offense, where art thou? We don't know how good the defense is, because, well, I smell a weak group. Christine Sinclair, normally one of the best strikers in the world, has looked distinctly off this cup -- and she normally plays on turf, it's not that.

How far will they go: I'm thinking not very. They have a sweet setup -- they won't have travel, they don't have to face any giants until the semi finals, you'd think they'd be on a run. But I don't think it matters, because the sleepers I've talked about are going to use them to level up so they can take a chance at the giants. Hell, I'd give you even money that Switzerland could take them out, but lordy, FIFA would HATE that, seeing all that sweet ticket money disappearing with the host nation. I think they can make it one step. I don't think two.

Prediction: Quarterfinals. If they're lucky.

16. Switzerland (Group C third place)

How they got here: Beat the (bleep) out of Ecuador, lost to Japan, lost to Cameroon. Beating the (bleep) out of Ecuador gave them the goal differential to get in.

Issues: We thought the Swiss would be much better, but while they've been shooting like mad, they haven't been getting shots on target -- less than 40% on frame. Worse, the attack-happy shot-happy method leave them wide open to the counter, and good teams will happily take them up on that. It's okay to give up four goals if you score eight -- but not when you score 8 in one game and give up four in the other two.

How far will they go: While I'm down on Canada, if Switzerland keeps on their merry "run towards the box and FIRE" ways, Canada is well versed at the North American "We Punish Turnovers" counterattack. Unless they're putting those balls on frame, it's going to be a long day for the Swiss. If they are putting them on frame, it might be an interesting game. Something tells me, though, there will be one more good day for Canada, and thus...

Prediction: Out in the Round of 16.

Games in the Round of 16 start today!

Superb post—I'll be referring to it a lot in coming days!

The USWNT is normally a very simple thing -- a blistering attack that scores goal after goal, but is a little shaky on defense.

And where the hell is that blistering attack? I've liked the way they've been playing in general, but if they don't start scoring more goals they're not going very far.

Today's matches.

Times are in US Central Daylight Time, which is A) the central time zone of the five times zone these matches are being played in and B) the time zone of yr. humble correspondent, so I'm used to the conversions and less likely to screw them up. Note I said less likely.

I have found a source for broadcast in the US/UK, so I'll append that. Hope it's correct! (FOX=Fox Main Network, FS= Fox Sports, FSX=Fox Sports 1, 2, etc. BBCX=BBC1,2,3, BRB=BBC Red Button)

Saturday, 20 June:

Germany vs. Sweden, 1500 CDT, Lansdowne Stadium, Ottawa (US: FS1, UK:BBC3)

China vs. Cameroon, 1830 CDT, Commonwealth Stadium, Edmonton (US: FS1, UK: BRB)

In the future, I know that two of the quarter finals, one of the semi finals, the third place game, and the final will be on Fox, which is the over-the-air broadcast network in the US. But most of the games in the US will be FS1 or FS2, which are mostly cable.

In the UK, all the games are also available online. Other nations availability varies.

If you live in a US city with a large hispanic population, see if Telemundo is available on your TV. They have the games as well, and while you may not be able to understand the commentators if you don't understand Spanish, they are a lot of fun to listen to. (Alas, Chicago, Univision doesn't have them...which is sad, they had great coverage of the World Cup, but they lost the contract to Telemundo, which we don't get over the air. Sniff)

I've not seen all the games, but am enjoying the ones I've seen. Definite midfield weakness in the U.S.A. team. Too conservative perhaps? Wambach looks off the pace, but is an excellent holder of the ball and at laying it off. When they play to that strength, they can look good. Playing balls for her to run on to...not so much.

England were a bit lucky against Colombia, who have some extremely talented individual players. Given the US's form, I wouldn't be surprised if Colombia beat them. The last half an hour was the England defense hoofing it away, and the offense giving it away. I do like Kirby though. She seems like a very intelligent player most of the time and works hard.

Japan are so good on the ball. They are often a real pleasure to watch.

A lot of blame for the uninspiring offense has rightly been placed on the midfield, particularly on the 442 lineup and the insistence of serving long balls in to well defended strikers. It's pretty clear that the US can no longer dominate with sheer physicality alone; the rest of the world is catching up quickly, and we will need a more sophisticated tactical approach. It will start with finding the right combination of players who can create sustained possession in the final third.

Also I think the turf has a lot to do with it as well.

That said, the defense is playing at a championship level, which gives some margin for error and will keep them in any game.

I hope that Canada is just having start-of-the-tournament nerves and will start scoring more goals soon. Their most fun player to watch has been Buchanan.

US: Abby Wambach is getting older and slower and mostly scores with her head. She was worried about injury so elected to play ZERO National Women's Soccer League games, so she's lacking in match fitness.

Alex Morgan didn't play any games for about 50 days before the tournament opened because she was recovering from injury.

Megan Rapinoe looks fantastic, she is all over the field - and she's a midfielder so I can't say all the trouble is coming from there at all.

Sydney Leroux (the girl who abandoned Canada to play for the US) opens a lot of space with her runs, but her shot's been off. She's more of a chaos-causer than a goalscorer, but it can work both ways for us.

It's hard to blame the turf when literally everyone is playing on it, don't you think?
posted by taterpie at 10:07 AM on June 20, 2015

Are any of the teams going to be affected by the long cross-country flight times, or are the games planned out so that won't be a problem? I see that Germany and Sweden are playing a 4 or 5 hour flight (plus time wasted in the airport) away from Edmonton.

Thanks for the roundup, eriko.

I'm not sold on the idea that it's the midfield mucking things up for the US. They have a solid amount of possession and are working well with the back line in building plays. (The defense, as mentioned, has been quite good all around.) Rapinoe has had really good play and is pushing forward to pull out the goals our forwards can't seem to find. I think the midfield has been picking up a lot of slack. Leroux is pushing forward all right, and she's had several close chances. I'm looking forward to her first goal in the tournament. But the dynamic duo we've come to expect from Morgan and Wambach is gone, baby, gone. Injuries and lack of team practice show, for those two. I was hopeful when Morgan started in the last game, but surprised to watch her run around with seemingly little direction. It was kind of manic. Took her twenty minutes to settle down, but still never saw much from her. I'm hoping Wambach's late header instills some confidence and drive in her, because she's looked rusty. It would be great to see those two step it up and get in sync again. Indeed, I think it will be an essential part of us getting past the semifinals. I'm just not sure it'll happen.

My non-US thoughts: holy crap, the English team must have learned how (and how often) to dive from the EPL (oh, lordy, I loved watching them lose to France); Germany...stop being so beautiful to watch (no, don't) and same for Japan; Norway's a great sleeper team. If they weren't playing the US so soon, my underdog rooting would go to Cameroon for two brilliant games in a row fought with nothing but crazy amounts of confidence and bulldozing (hey, it could happen). However, I think China might play too technical to let that happen. We'll see; I love watching the young teams, knowing there's women's football culture still growing in those countries

As to the artificial turf, it is instructive to look at who the USWNT players play for when they're not playing for the USWNT, and look at where they play. Six of the nine fields are artificial turf. One is actually AstroTurf.

The biggest issue with turf, and it is a real issue, is that in direct sunlight, it can get *very* hot very quickly, which makes it rather grabby and if there isn't a breeze makes it very hot period. There is a fix, but it's very very very expensive. Just like grass fields can have piping installed underneath to allow you to warm them to keep them from freezing, you can installing piping underneath artificial turf to cool them, but it's a massively expensive retrofit -- even more expensive that piping a grass field, because you're digging out concrete rather than dirt.

The biggest mistake on artificial turf is wearing the wrong cleats. Long cleats for grass are a mistake on turf. You want firm ground cleats with short cleats. The wrong cleats mean you're bottoming out, so you're running on concrete -- which means you're getting hurt.

South Korea (Group E Runner Up)

Issues: Very little experience. Very short goalkeeper, and height is a real factor in the sport in general and goalkeeping in particular -- Sweden, Germany and the US are know for both good goaltenders and tall women and this is *not* unrelated.

Very interesting! Also completely baseless. Based on who played in the last group matches:

Kim Jung-Mi (Korea) = 5' 10"
Hedvig Lindahl (Sweden) = 5' 10"
Nadine Angerer (Germany) = 5' 9"
Hope Solo (USA) = 5' 9"
Wang Fei (China) = 5' 10"
Miho Fukumoto (Japan) = 5' 5"

Source (Other countries are selectable using dropdown menu.)

Kim is not great and has often looked a liability, but it's not because of her height. Funny you highlight her shortness when she's a full 5" taller than Fukumoto.

> I'm pleased to see that the NYT is doing their Spot the Ball thing for the WWC as well.

Thanks for that, it was fun! (I only beat 64.52% of other players overall, but 99.05% in the US-Nigeria one.)

Umm, because my notes had her at 1.6m, which is 5' 3". Wiki has her at 1.78m, which, yeah, puts here right in the pack.

What we call this is, well, wrong. I'd love to say that was the first time I was wrong, but then I'd be wrong twice here! Thanks for catching that. Apologies. If I'd had a chance to see Japan play this year I might have spotted it, but I didn't.

I'm not sure this makes sense to me. As you say it might mean a weak group, but it might also mean a group made up of teams with more defensive qualities. it's not better to finish third than first in the group - you can only play the team in front of you!

I actually got to one of the opening round games!! I saw Canada vs Netherlands in Montreal. Tons of fun!!

My incredibly neophyte analysis: Canada has a weak midfield and that is really hurting their ability both to create good scoring chances and to prevent penetration into their zone. Their defense is quite solid and can turn away a lot attacks, but if an opponent gets organized midfield, they can swamp Canada.

As for Sinclair...yeah, she really looks like she's lost more than a step. In the game I attended, they kept trying to create chances for her in set pieces, but she couldn't get to the ball. In open play, she almost seemed like a non-factor.

Well, in the Controversy Files -- and what World Cup doesn't end up with a large file cabinet full of these?

1) Twice, the sent-off coach of China talks to somebody next to him, who madly texts someone. The trainer on the bench gets a text. Immediately, China sends in a sub. If this is really a connection, this is in fact a major breach of the rules.

2) Do you even concussion protocol, bro? I mean, you wrapped her head up with pretty much every bandage you had, but yeah, the four second between finishing that and sending her back in was plenty of time to check her mental state, right?

But, we're down to fourteen. A convincing win, of course, by Germany, and a tight 1-0 win by China. Sweden and Cameroon head home.

Three games tomorrow.

Day two of the knockouts. We're down to 14.

The reason these games aren't on Fox, and therefore, broadcast TV, is they are apparently showing the US Open Golf tournament in a post-apocalyptic hell. Take a gander between games.

Speaking of games, we have some! We have three. It's a magic number. Yes it is.

Brazil vs. Australia, Noon CDT, Moncton Stadium, Moncton

France vs. South Korea, 15:00 CDT, Olympic Stadium, Montreal

Canada vs. Switzerland, 18:30 CDT, BC Place, Vancouver

Oddball note: Say goodbye to Moncton, this will be our last game played here.

You may have noticed the intervals between games are longer -- this is because the games can run longer, since they'll play an extra 30 minutes if they're tied after 90, then go to kicks from the penalty spot if they're still tied. So, they want at least three hours between them.

Three seeded teams today. Naturally, they put Canada as the late game, because ratings! Ticket sales! Money!

As to our two advancing teams: Germany moves from Ottawa to Montreal for the Quarter Finals on the 26th, a short trip, might even be a bus ride (~100mi/160km depending on exactly where in the two cities you're going.) Heck, I'd certainly do it on a bus, unless there was a decent train. Just dealing with the airports would take longer. China moves from Edmonton to Ottawa for the Quarter Finals on the same date, that's quite the haul (~3400km/2112 miles*) We don't know who they will play yet, and we won't officially know until later today for Germany and tomorrow for Friday.

So. See you at noon, CDT, for the first kickoff.

* I kid you not. OF COURSE IT WOULD BE. CANADA!

Was in a bar in Kansas during the 2011 USA vs Japan final, when I almost got into my first sports fight. I was sitting at a table and there was a black man at the bar, watching the game. Coming from a well mixed family, I was super stoked that both teams in the final were two of "my" teams. The other guy was clearly team USA. When the USA scored its first goal, the man at the bar shouted "Yeah, Pearl Harbor, bitches!"

Now, theres a clash of unexpected here. I'm sure he didn't expect to find a Japan fan in Kansas. I usually only watch domestic soorts. I'm sure he didn't expect anyone to be offended. I'd never heard anyone say something that overtly racist and misogynistic in a "friendly" context. I was pretty much shocked into insensibility, so not thinking straight, I did the only thing I could think of. When Japan scored their first goal, I took a deep breath, shouted "Woo! Nagasaki, motherfucker!"

I'd never shouted anything offensive in a sports match before, and I probably never will again. Lacking experience, my voice cracked partway through. And then there was silence. He definitely heard me. The guy at the bar, who I remember as being much taller than me, looked just as shocked as I did when he first shouted. He started to stand up, but the bartender took his arm, gave a little headshake, and that was the end of that.

We both watched the game in silence from then on, and left quietly when it was over. although I don't know what would have happened if the USA won that game. That would have been really embarrasing. I'd like to think that that day, we both learned not to shout horribly offensive things in sports bars again.

So that's why I think I'll stick with the classic "Nihon Ganbare!" this year.

I honestly don't know which team is more surprised by this one, but... BRA 0-1 AUS. Did not expect that one, but the Aussies hung tough and made that one big break count. Brazil couldn't get the Timbit in the basket, and becomes the first group seed and first group winner to fall. (Well, there's only been one other group seed/winner to play so far, but it sounds dramatic, right?)

And I'm happy to report that despite the fact that I understand about 20 words of Spanish, Telemundo's commentators are *vastly* better than Fox's.

And then there were 11.

France will take a "long" trip from Montreal to Montréal, and they will play Germany in their quarterfinal match, the first of the titan matches. That, so far, is the only quarterfinal match that we have both sides for. That match happens on the 26th.

Canada will also stay in place, in Vancouver, they play on the 27th.

Australia, as a 2nd place team in their group, gets on a plane and goes to Edmonton, they also play on the 27th.

In the Round of 16 matches, we have five done, but three remain. Two more tomorrow, one Tuesday. See you then.

Good morning!

Two, two, two more matches today! Two more quarterfinals to fill!

But first, a belated farewell to Winnipeg, which I'd missed that we'd finished with in the group stages! Goodbye Winnipeg, amazingly flat city of the west!

Broadcast note: I found out that Sirius XM has the audio broadcast of all the games. Check the website for the exact channel, live games are always like that, they'll use news channels on weekends and a bank of empty channels as well so there's no discernible pattern. Don't try to sync them to a Spanish language TV broadcast, they're like two minutes behind. Trust me on that. :-)

If anybody is from another country besides US/UK and wants me to include that in the broadcast note parenthetical, let me know.

Anyway, today we have:

Norway vs. England, 16:00 CDT, Lansdowne Stadium, Ottawa (US=FS1, UK=BBC3)

United States vs. Colombia, 19:00 CDT, Commonwealth Stadium, Edmonton (US=FS1, UK=BBC2)

Norway vs. England is, technically, the other match of the non-seeds, but they're both very good teams, closely matched, and with the Australian upset of Brazil, playing on the side of a bracket down to only two strong teams (Japan and Canada.) This is the side a sleeper could well run to the final on, and if any team is going to be that sleeper, it's one of these two. Honestly, in terms of best game to watch, once again, I think the non-USWNT match is going to be that game. Thankfully, this isn't the group stages, we can watch both.

The USWNT? What can we say that hasn't already been said. Well, we can put some numbers behind it, like this article does. Colombia is still feeling good about the French upset, they feel if they can beat France, they can beat anybody, and who knows? We've already had one upset so far, and oh, the wailing and gnashing of teeth that will happen in US Soccer if the US go out in the Round Of 16.

Also, with Marta out and Birgit Prinz not playing, Abby Wambach has a real chance of becoming the all time leading WWC goal scorer. She's on 14, Marta has 15. Both have 1 so far this tournament.

They almost exactly mirror. 3 in 2003, Marta had 7 in 2007 over Wambach's 6, and both had 4 in 2011. Amazing given the very different styles they play, Marta is a (depending on what football tradition you grew up in) playmaking forward or second striker (and almost plays as a #10/attacking mid) and Wambach is a pure center forward.

In one of those oddities, UEFA uses the WWC as the qualifier for the Women's Olympic Soccer Tournament. The three best finishing European teams qualify. Because England isn't eligible*, the Norway loss means that Germany and France have locked qualification, and if I am reading the standings correctly, if the Netherlands wins tomorrow, they'll will also qualify, having also made the quarterfinals. Otherwise, Norway will, having come 2nd in a group as opposed to third for the Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland, all having made the Group of 16 but no further.

* England isn't an IOC country, Great Britain is, but Great Britain isn't competing in the World Cup. This is odd, but there it is, England can't compete in the Olympic soccer tournament.

After throwing a red at a goalie? That's the biggest card a ref can throw. A lot of refs will eat that card.

Not sure if this was directed at me, but this is exactly why I was concerned by the ref pulling out early yellow cards for relatively soft yellows. It sets a certain tone to the game whereby lots of cards get thrown and everyone gets a bit more scrappy. And if you see a yellow for one side, it's expected that the ref should consistently throw the same card for every similar foul. The red card was definitely a red card, but I would have liked to have seen the ref spend a little more time cooling down the field and having good control over the game, rather than pulling the soft yellows early on. Especially in a two-yellows-and-you're-out tournament.

Solo is the best goaltender in the women's game, and it's not even close. She has range and an uncanny awareness of space, plus an ability to play the ball forward that many midfielders wish they had.

The US has always had a knack at goaltenders, mainly because two very popular sports here build skillsets that directly map onto soccer goaltending -- basketball and volleyball, and even better, body types that make for good volleyballers and certain basketballers make for good goalkeepers.

So it's not that surprising that the two best goalies in the women's game have been from the US, Briana Scurry and Hope Solo.

Peep Peep PEEP. USA 2-0 COL. I'm not even going to be to describe this game. Oh OK. Columbia managed to confuse the US, despite good US pressure and a called back goal, and some soft cards, but a disastrous mistake by the Columbian goalkeeper at the start of the second half led to a red card for DOGSO, which led to -- a completely missed penalty kick. No worries, the US scored two and won easily with the person advantage.

The big disaster for the USA, Lauren Holiday and Megan Rapinoe both picked up 2nd Yellow Cards and will sit for the quarter final game.

And where will those be, you ask?

Well...

England will travel to Vancouver and face Canada on the 27th of June, and the US will travel to Ottawa and face China on the 26th of June.

It does make watching the games really freaking hard.

And we're going to *have* to try something new in the quarterfinals. We can't play the 4-4-2, because we won't have Holiday and Rapinoe to do it with. What will Ellis do? We won't know until Friday.

Controversies from yesterday (heh.)

1) The red card. Some argue that there was a Colombian defender close enough to not make it an obvious goal scoring opportunity. I don't buy it. It was obvious Morgan was straight onto goal and the ball was behind the GT (sorry) GK when she was taken out. That was the right call -- calling DOGSO on the GK is the single biggest game changer a ref can do, and many refs flinch when they need to do it. Full credit on this one, who did *not* have a good first half, for doing it. That part of the call was correct. Heck, the ball damn near ended up in the net anyway (which, arguably, would have saved the Colombian GK, because you can't have DOGSO if a goal is scored.)

2) The PK awarded. It was close, but replays show it was barely outside the box. Not a PK, should have been a direct free kick just outside the box. Of course, the WORST PK OF THE TOURNAMENT nullified that missed call.

When the NFL rates a call (and they rate *every* call the officials make,) they have three grades. "Correct" means the call was correct. "Incorrect" means the officials blew the call. "Support" means the officials in fact got the call wrong, but the league realizes that while they can see the call was wrong after multiple replays from multiple camera angles, they understand that the officials on the field, who get one chance to see it, would make call it the way they did honestly, and you have to call what you see, so while they call was wrong, they're not going to mark down that crew for that call.

The call to award the PK? I'd grade that as a clear "support." It was close enough to the line that from a distance, I could easily have seen it as in the box and award the PK. So, while it was factually an incorrect call, I wouldn't mark down that ref for that call. You really needed to be in the right place to see it, and most of the right places to see it would have been the wrong place for the ref to be for other plays, and the rest of them involved being up in the air an impossible distance. Don't punish a ref for making a wrong call for being otherwise in the right position and having to make a difficult call at distance, and at the initial moment, I thought it was in the box as well.

3) Somebody pointed out that wasn't it amazing that the two yellow cards that went out early happened to go out to the two US players that were already on yellow cards? Hmm? Unfortunately, that someone was Abby Wambach, and that sort of thing will get you suspended, as Christine Sinclair found out after bitching about the ref in the 2012 Olympics, which got her a $3500 fine and a four match ban.

Her defense, I'm sure, is that she will say she wasn't accusing the *ref* of doing that, just that it was strange that this happened. We'll see what FIFA thinks. If they do take action resulting in a suspension, she would be able to appeal, if that appeal wasn't heard before Friday, she would be eligible to play Friday's quarterfinal, even if the appeal was heard Friday and rejected. Basically, the fact that the appeal was not heard by end-of-day Thursday makes her eligible Friday, they don't leave you hanging during game prep.

I think that's it.

Yeah, we have field hockey, but it's a specialist interest*. Hockey is just hockey with no qualifiers. Hockey without ice is most commonly played on the street with two nets and an orange ball: shinny.

Actually, I can see it now!

The draw Poland, Spain and Czechoslovakia in the group stage, and win that easily. They get Belgium in the round of 16, blitz them, then the Netherlands in the quarters, take them out, then France in the semifinals, and it's over before the half.

And then they get cocky and take on Russia *and* England *and* the USA in the final, and lose badly.

Yes, Dan... but they didn't touch the midfielders, and the US bench is very deep. I'm afraid Japan has awoken a sleeping team here. This match has just begun, and the Americans are out to end it on their terms now.

Oh, about those UEFA Olympic qualifiers....

Turns out the fact that Norway did better in the group stage? Means nothing. If the Netherlands had beat Japan, they would have joined France and Germany in the Olympics. They didn't. So, there is going to be a four way tournament between them, Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland for that last spot.

Why? Because someone was smoking the wacky tobaccky when they decided this, that's why.

Why they don't run another full qualification tournament like everyone else and get even more money I have no idea. Because it is really awesome wacky tobaccky and they aren't sharing obviously.

Okay, guys.

PREDICTION TIME!

First, my brave/stupid predictions

GER 2-3 FRA (?!)
CHN 0-1 USA

AUS 1-3 JPN
ENG 1-1 CAN, England in PKs.

Yes, I think France can beat Germany. Germany is tough, but they haven't been tested this Worldcup. France has, got surprised one and toughen up. The US will continue to have a brick wall defense and an incompetent offense that will get one goal.

Japan will, alas, send the Aussies home efficiently. Goodbye, Matildas, you played the US the best and that brag of yours was absolutely right. You are all set to be a real power come next time. I think England can hold the fort against the hosts and then? Well I think the have the right attitude to win in PKs.

Anybody else want to lay it on the line and be completely and utterly wrong like me?

I haven't been able to follow the elimination stage as closely as I had hoped:

GER 2-FRA 2, FRA in PKs
CHN 1-USA 2

AUS 0 - JPN 2
ENG 0 - CAN 0, CAN in PKs.

(Have to go with CAN as, you know, I'm a homer).

Prepared to be completely wrong!

I dislike making predictions in general... but in this particular case, what the hell...

GER 1-FRA 2 (I'm honestly just going with my heart on this one, in theory they're very evenly matched teams).
CHN 0-USA 2 (Though narratively speaking, China should go to the end and lose to the lovable underdog team).

AUS 1 - JPN 2 (The Japanese defense can always make mistakes, but their attackers should be able to score more than one goal agains the Matildas).
ENG 1 - CAN 2 a.e.t. (I just think that the massed fans will spur Canada to victory).

I'm generally more in favor of good analysis than crapshoot guesses, but I'd say that since I'm more often wrong than not when predicting scores.

eriko: The *only* explanation for that Netherlands goal was the goalkeeper's controller broke.

Watching it again, it looks like she's caught completely off guard by the way the ball bounces. I think this one can be chalked up to playing on turf.
posted by Kattullus at 11:40 AM on June 24, 2015

The thing is, almost everywhere, these guys have played on turf often -- many practice fields are turf, because they can't handle the constant wear with grass. 6 of the 9 US women's pro teams play on turf. A lot of practice fields are turf because grass can't handle the day-in-day-out workload.

Of course, that particular turf in Vancouver isn't very popular with the MLS crowd. They rated it the 2nd worst surface in the league (behind New England) but BC Place sees a lot of events besides MLS and CFL games and the turf spend a lot of time under covers and gets matted down. And this is an issue because Vancouver is where the final will be played -- and note where Japan was playing when that goal happened.
posted by eriko at 12:29 PM on June 24, 2015

If FIFA is so goddam concerned with the women's game, why can't they make sure it's not played on turf? "Well, it doesn't just happen at the World Cup" isn't much help.
posted by languagehat at 1:28 PM on June 24, 2015

I honestly don't know why. Guesses.

1) 5 of the 6 stadia were turf, Canada (the only bid left) said it would cost too much and they would pull out if they had to convert to grass. FIFA said OK.

2) Canada simply didn't think it was a big deal. FIFA said convert Moncton to turf so all the fields were consistent, they did.

3) The turf manufacturer paid FIFA a big bribe.

Pick your favorite.

21. Nigeria (1 pt -3)
22. Mexico (1 pt -6)
23. Ivory Coast (0 pts -13)

posted by sauril at 3:43 PM on June 26, 2015

And to call out an earlier conversation? Yes, if Hope Solo is the best GK in the world? Nadine Angerer is the only one playing who's close. I don't think she's better. But she's at least in the argument. The one thing I'll give her without hesitation is hand speed -- she's a damn kung fu master with her hands. Hope relies more on getting her body in the way and knowing where to put her body, Angerer can count on getting her arms up fast.

It's also her last dance -- she's retiring after this World Cup.

France really should have won that.

All those shots, didn't get them in. Almost doesn't count. You gotta get them in the net while you had the chance. If they had the finish, this was 3-0 at the half, done and dusted.

They let Germany back into this match, and you cannot do that.
posted by eriko at 3:46 PM on June 26, 2015

I'm watching the highlights -- 1st minute, they had Angerer beat, and they missed the frame.

117 minute -- they had her beat again -- she's completely out of position -- and they missed the frame AGAIN.

They beat Nadine Angerer THREE TIMES and walked away with one goal.

You don't win like that.

We have two more matches today! For 27 June, 2015, we have:

Australia vs. Japan, 15:00 CDT, Commonwealth Stadium, Edmonton

England vs. Canada, 18:30 CDT, BC Place, Vancouver

The winners have the semi finals and another match ahead of them. They will meet in the July 1st semifinal. The losers have a long flight home. Well, unless Canada loses, that's not as long a flight for them.

First round prediction winners:

For Germany-France, I'm giving it to ChurchHatesTucker for his 2-1 Germany, which is closest and has Germany winning.

For USA-China, we have three who nailed it: ChurchHatesTucker, Tsuga, and Yours Truly, and an oh so close, Rock Steady, who got the score right but shanks it with the "a.e.t." at the end.

So, 2-0 so far ChurchHatesTucker. Try not to be too smug.

Whoop, I didn't set my watch to EDT, missed most of the 1st half, and this is not the score I expected to see. Good on the Aussies.

Oh, lordy, yes. Even worse was listening to it in the car, when they had it all mixed into flat stereo and you could barely hear the call over the crowd noise, and it all compressed into an incredibly narrow channel so you had like 4KHz of bandwidth.

Has Japan been paying this slow all tournament? I remember them being really fast in 2011.

You'd think one of these times Japan is going to score. They're working the ball in. Australia's bombing it in long distance and hoping for a breakaway.

I followed the game in The Guardian's minute-by-minute report. I nominate the following as the most Australian thing said about this Australian team: "Kerr is doubled over, looking as exhausted as a pair of socks you’ve worn on a 98km hike across a desert track."
posted by Kattullus at 3:01 PM on June 27, 2015

That miss hardly matters now as Japan score a well-deserved goal. Australia have a mountain to climb now. Or at least a very large hill, which tend to be called mountains in Australia.

I love the Guardian's liveblog!

Kattullus: “"Kerr is doubled over, looking as exhausted as a pair of socks you’ve worn on a 98km hike across a desert track."”
At one point, one of the Australian players got a bottle of water during a stoppage, opened it, and poured it over her feet rather than into her mouth. It seems like the conditions on that turf are hellish, despite protestations to the contrary by the organizers.

Also, I got a chance to hear more clearly during the second half at one point when I was watching in the kitchen, and I thought what I heard was, "Hai! Hai! Hai! So I'm inclined to believe it was the Japanese team calling to each other during the match.

Okay. Back home. A few post keeping, or if you prefer, post tending posts. First.

Since we've finished the quarterfinals, we can update the standings.
(eliminated in Quarterfinals)

5. France (10 pts +7) (Qualifies for Olympic Women's Tournament)
6. Canada (8 pts +1)
7. Australia (7 pts +0)
8. China (7 pts +0) (loses on goals for (4 vs. 5))
(eliminated in Round of 16)
9. Brazil (9 pts +3)
10. Norway (7 pts +5)
11. Cameroon (6 pts +5)
12. Colombia (4 pts -1)
13. The Netherlands (4 pts -1) (loses on goals for (3 vs. 4))
14. South Korea (4 pts -4)
15. Switzerland (3 pts +6)
16. Sweden (3 pts -3)
(eliminated in Group Stage)
17. Thailand (3 pts -7)
18. Costa Rica (2 pts -1)
19. New Zealand (2 pts -1) (loses on goals for (2 vs. 3))
20. Spain (1 pt -2)
21. Nigeria (1 pt -3)
22. Mexico (1 pt -6)
23. Ivory Coast (0 pts -13)
24. Ecuador (0 pts -16)

The remaining teams play two games. The results of those determines thier place.

Lose, then lose: Fourth.
Lose, then win: Third.
Win, then lose: Second.
Win, then win: Champions.

Finally, as to the Olympics. Regardless, Germany also qualifies as the (now 1st, since they have advanced farther than France) qualifier to the Women's Olympic Tournament. France is the 2nd Qualifier. The Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland and Sweden will later play a four game tournament for the third and final place (I thought Norway would win it on points, but nope.)

England doesn't qualify for the Olympic tournament because the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish FAs objected to England representing the United Kingdom alone in that tournament, rather than a UK wide team, but there's no way for a UK wide team to try and qualify, because UEFA uses the WWC as the Olympic Qualifier. Had the other FA's agreed, England could have stood for the UK, but they didn't, so The FA stood down the offer, and despite England also being in the semis, will not be in the Olympics. England alone is not an Olympic nation, so that team cannot participate.

Hopefully, UEFA will fix this by stop using the WWC and actually hosting a tournament like the other confederations, which would allow a UK wide team to enter.

Postkeeping #2: How did I do?

Remember those predictions I made in the FPP? Let's see...

DING! DING! DING!
1 for 1

2) Cameroon.
Predicted: Out in R16.
Actual: Out in R16.

4) Columbia.
Predicted: Out in R16.
Actual: Out in R16.

5) Germany.
Predicted: Teutonic Efficiency... (Still here.)
Actual: Is Teutonic! (Still here.)
DING! DING! DING!
5 for 5

6) Sweden.
Predicted: Made two, so calling it a push.
Actual: For the record, the pod people showed up, and they were out in R16.
5 for 5, one push

7) France.
Predicted: Stupidly, Still Here, which meant this or Germany was wrong.
Actual: And this was the wrong one.
(Sad Trombone.)
5 for 6, one push

8) South Korea
Predicted: Out in R16.
Actual: Out in R16.
BACK TO THE DING! DING! DING!
6 for 7, one push

9) Brazil
Predicted: Still here (but warned I could be wrong.)
Actual: Out in R16 (I was wrong.)
(Sad Trombone Strikes Back!)
6 for 8, one push

10) Australia
Predicted: Out in R16.
Actual: Out in Quarterfinals. They weren't who I was expecting to make me wrong about Brazil.
(Sad Trombone III: The Saddening.)
6 for 9, one push

11) Japan
Predicted: Still here (but warned I could be wrong.)
Actual: STILL HERE! (Brazil couldn't knock them out because Australia.)
SAVE ME DINGER! DING! DING! DING!
7 for 10, one push.

12) The Netherlands
Predicted: Out in R16.
Actual: Out in R16.
MORE OF THAT SWEET DING! DING! DING!
8 for 11, one push.

13) Norway.
Predicted: Still Here as the Sleeper.
Actual: Out in R16, WRONG SLEEPER.
(Sad Trombone IV: Sad Trombone Jubilee All Stars!)
8 for 12, one push.

14) England.
Predicted: Out in R16
Actual: HERE'S THE FUCKING SLEEPER. Still Here.
(Sad Trombone V: Sad Trombone goes to London!)
8 for 13, one push.

15) Canada.
Predicted: Out in QF, if they were lucky.
Actual: Out in QF, they were lucky.
DING! DING! DING! EH!
9 for 14, one push

16) Switzerland.
Predicted: Out in the QF.
Actual: Out in the QF.
DING ME BABY ON LAST TIME! DING! DING! DING!
10 for 15, one push.

So... 10 correct, 5 wrong, one push. I did correctly predict a sleeper, I just predicted the wrong one -- Norway instead of England, but they started in exactly the same place and ran exactly the same path to the Semifinal, so I could almost take a bonus DING! for that.

I don't think Germany is going to light up the USA. Colombia put two on France, couldn't put any on the USA, and Germany barely got one on France. The USA back four have been brilliant all tournament, and the US GKs are the best there are.

I don't know who's going to win -- but there score is going to be at most 1-1. This is the two best teams with the two best defenses and the two best goalkeepers in Angerer and Solo. The only difference is you have the methodical and precise offense of Germany versus the opportunistic offense of the US, and I don't think either one is going to work here.

If it went 0-0 a.e.t, I would not be surprised. If it went down 0-0 a.e.t and pks were 5-4 and we were at a must-save PK, I would not be surprised -- and I'm not sure who'd I want at that line. Could Angerer do it again? Could Solo, who hasn't been tested at all the last four games?

England? Well, the easy street that let the sleeper sneak in is over. Canada had horrific offensive problems the entire tournament, dominated most of that game, but simply couldn't get the ball in the net, and made a howler which England (to its great credit) immediately made them pay for.

But Japan is on a whole different level. Can England beat them? I don't think they can. But if any England team could beat Japan, this is the one. But England's defense is going to have to play tight to stop Japan -- and, of course, the question is will Karen Bardsley be able to go into goal or will Siobhan Chamberlain have to make the start, her first at the WC level and only second appearance?

It will be tough for England. I think they'll lose 2-0. I do not want them to, and I really hope I'm wrong again here.

A tale of two quarterfinals, in the xG (Expected Goals) maps.

The first: The USA dominates 1-0. What do you mean, dominates? This. Note that China never even got close, and the TOTAL expected goals was 0.2

Yes. China's total expected goals of all of their shots was 1/5th of a goal.

That's a domination with defense. Yes, the US should have scored more, but really, they didn't need to, because China wasn't going to score. China, which had gotten that far with generally precise passing, was *shattered* by the US offense and midfield pressure. They literally could do nothing but bunker down, bomb the ball away, and pray that the shots wouldn't go in.

This was, by far, the best game the USWNT has played all year, and if the USWNT can play like that Tuesday, Germany will have it hands, err, feet full.

Now, can you completely dominate a game offensively and lose? Yes, you can. If France could have finished off those attacks, this game wasn't even close. But despite all those quality attacks, they couldn't get it in the net, which meant when they made the mistake and gave up the penalty, they let Germany back into the game -- and they went home.

But this map doesn't bode well for Germany. 120 minutes, and a total of 1 expected goal. They have to do better than that, and while there are still a lot of very valid question about the front of the USWNT, the back line is the best there is right now. The German offense has to step it up if they're going to have a chance at advancing. France damn near shut them down, and France was a much weaker defense. If Germany's attack is like that again, Germany's xG map is going to look more like China's, and that doesn't bode well for their hopes.

Finally. The US and Germany have met three times before, twice in the Semifinals, once in the quarters. 2-1 in favor of the US. But the real important fact -- each time, the winner of that match went on and won the World Cup.

Gee, I wonder what could have gotten into her eye.

What many wise people said on twitter -- if it had been a bit of the turf, the very first thing that trainer would have done would have been to flush her eye out with the eyewash kit they all carry, because getting things in your eye is a thing that happens on both turf and grass fields.

The trainer *did not* do that.

We're still wondering what caused it, but it's just as likely to be something to relive pain or muscle soreness, or even sunscreen, as the turf. Yes, turf sucks, but it is not the cause of *all* the problems in this world cup. (France didn't lose because of the seeding. France lost because they didn't hit an open net. Twice. Oh, and they gave up that penalty late in regulation.)

But, for England's sake, that's good news that it looks like she'll play, but the reports of a black eye don't really jibe with a allergic reaction. Then again, maybe they were just wrong.

Good Morning!

There is but one match today. Then again, at this point, they're all going to mean something.

Today, we say goodbye to Montreal, et nous disons au revoir à Montréal.

30 June 2015: Semifinal #1

USA vs. Germany, 18:00 CDT, Olympic Stadium, Montreal

Broadcast: USA=FOX, UK=BBC3, SIRI=94, XM=94

The World's #1 ranked team vs. the World's #2 ranked team. The highest scoring team in the tournament vs. the best defense in the tournament. The unstoppable force vs. the unmovable wall. Arguably, an early version of the final England and Japan yell HEY but I did say arguably. Whenever these two have faced each other in the tournament, the winner goes on and wins it all.

The US, normally known for POWER!!!!!!, has a sputtering offense and a defense second to none. Germany, the unstoppable machine, went up against France and was found badly wanting, saved only by the deft hands of Nadine Angerer on the very last kick from the spot after 120 desperate minutes, a handball gift and two major missed opportunities from France. What was expected to be a masterclass from Frau Mannschaft ended up being a 1-1 a.e.t. 5-4 nail biter and (had France finished up what they started) could easily have been a French walkover.

The V8 American Big Block is down on power. The German Precision Machine is misfiring. Both two time champions. Can either get back in form?

Cat Whitehill, you were a brilliant player, you need to find the person who told you that you could do color commentary and you need to hurt them badly.

And have a feeling that person was Alexi Lalas.

Can Angerer actually clear the ball? I noticed that was a huge problem against France--all she ever did was roll it to her left back. Hope Solo can be relied upon to get the ball almost to the other box if USA is having trouble getting through the midfield; Angerer doesn't seem able/willing to help her team that way.

Well. I didn't expect that half.

Well, other than one detail, this one's been pretty much in the hands of the US.

But that's what France said.

One thing, though -- the pace this game is moving at definitely favors the US.

But we need to get the Timbit in the basket. Everything else is working, but we're not getting that last bit done. Personally? If we sub forwards, I'd sub out Morgan for Press or Leroux, but NOT Wambach or Rodriguez. We need speed here.

OH GOD SHUT UP LALAS SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP

(thank god for mute)

Questions: Is Morgan Brian OK? If there's ANY question, then I'd get O'Hara in there pronto, she played brilliantly against China.

Keep up the pressure, Germany is not handling it well. Do *NOT* fall for the temptation of Wambach, this game is going to be won with speed and energy. Keep doing what we're doing -- it's working, mostly, we just need to work on the finish.

There were questions about the USWNT this whole tournament, but there are no questions now -- the US flat outplayed Germany the entire match. Yes, one goal was on a bad PK call, but the other was a straight out clean goal -- and Germany could have tied it, and shanked a PK.

This was Julie Johnston's worst match, and she was *still* amazing. She's the US Tourney MVP, without a doubt.

Person of the match? Gotta give it to Carli Lloyd, in my opinion. Scored one on the PK, fed O'Hara on the other, was a force the entire game. She's gotten better as the tournament has gone on. Nicely done, Ms. Lloyd.

So. Finalist #1: USA.

The US will play on Sunday, July 5th in Vancouver, in the title match.

Germany will play on Saturday, July 4th, in Edmonton, in the third place game.

And, yes -- it is very possible we are going to have a rematch of the 2011 final. We shall see.

And, again. Holy. Shit.

Good morning!

I'm in an airport lounge! I didn't get a lot of sleep last night for some reason.

And we still have three games to go, and they just get more important as we go.

Because it takes two to Watusi, we need to find another Watusi-ee. And that, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, is what tonight is all about. So, keep your head, arms, hands, legs and feet inside the vehicle at all times, because tonight we have, in a loser goes nowhere match (literally!)

1 July 2015: Semifinal #2

England vs. Japan, 18:00 CDT, Commonwealth Stadium, Edmonton

Broadcast: US=FS1, UK=BBC1, BBC3, BBC5Live, Siri=94, XM=94

Japan: Neat, clean, tidy, seems to make that one mistake that's going to cost them the match then turns around and wins the game. Also, the defending World Cup champions, ranked #4 in the world. Currently the favorites in this match.

England: #6 in the world, which was consider a stretch by many. And yet -- almost beat France, almost won the group, and now in the Semifinal. Plays hard, has gotten farther than anyone thought they could, won games by grit, energy, and most importantly, by making teams pay for mistakes. You know, like Japan seems to make.

I think this game is not the blowout many are thinking it will be. If the 2011 Japan team shows up? Yeah, that would be Japan in a blowout -- but that was a younger team. This Japan is a wiser, but slower team, but can they handle England's energy, and the fact that England, having gotten much farther than they'd ever dreamed they can get, can almost taste that final? Japan has the precision -- many of the prettiest goals of the tournament have been made by the Japanese. England has the drive, they will bomb in and get the ball in the net, somehow, some way, England expects to score.

We find out tonight. The winner goes to Vancouver and meets the United States for the title match. The loser stays here and plays Germany for third place. Yes, this time, the loser does not go home. If Japan wins, we have a rematch of the 2011 Final. If England wins, we have a rematch for the War of 1812.

See you then!

So, I was looking at that Julie Johnston yellow card/penalty again.

The ref was right -- that was a penalty and a yellow, not a red for DOGSO. She made several mistakes, but she got that one right.

Popp didn't have an obvious goal scoring opportunity. She didn't have control over the ball, which is one of the keys to an "obvious" goal scoring opportunity. She wasn't about to get control of the ball. She never even touched the ball until after JJ touched it, and even then, it was a long reach of the leg for her to even get it because of the fact that the ball was bouncing wildly.

If Popp had brought the ball into the box and JJ pulled her from behind like that? Yes, red card, without a doubt. But she didn't. They were both going for a loose ball. That's not an "obvious goal scoring opportunity," that's a foul in a race for a ball, and in every referee guide there is, a foul in a race for a ball is a clear example of not DOGSO.

The ref was right to A) give the penalty and B) give the yellow as a foul for taking down what could have become a breakaway, and C) not giving a red. There wasn't an obvious goal there. Compare to Alex Morgan getting taken down by the Columbian goalkeeper in the round of 16. If she's not fouled there, she scores without any doubt, she has control of the ball, the ball is heading on goal, there's only the GK between her and goal, the ball is behind the GK. That's a DOGSO. Handball in the goal? That's a dogs. GK catching the ball outside the box on a breakaway because they forgot where the box was? That's DOGSO.

Here? The ball isn't heading into the goal, nobody has control, though Popp is closer to it, and there's a GK between the ball and goal. Not DOGSO. Yes, a FOX commentator called it a clear red card, which I submit to you as more proof that it was not!

Now, the ref did error on the Colombian GK red card in granting a penalty kick, because that foul occurred outside the box. It was still a red card for DOGSO, but it should have been a DFK just outside, not a PK.

On the US PK last night? That's a harder call -- a shove in the back foul is a foul as long as you are shoving. If the hands were on the back at any point over the line, it was a foul in the box and a PK was the correct call, and we don't have an angle that clearly shows that. However, I think that this was a miss -- that this should have also been a DFK just outside the box, not a PK.

But, to go back to my NFL example above -- that call also rates a support. The ref on the pitch at a distance is looking at an angle to the box that makes it very difficult to see exactly over the box. If you are within half a meter/a foot of the box, don't foul -- the ref is likely to call you in the box, because if they're any distance away, it's going to look like you are in the box to them!

Cameras above the pitch can see that you're not, but a ref on the field cannot -- it's a simple matter of angles. You want camera technology, this is one where I think a few fixed cameras and a 5th ref watching them could make a huge difference when the on field ref could ask 'Was that in the box at the time of the foul?" Personally, I'd make sure that if the 5th ref dithers, I'd say "Okay, not in the box" and call the DFK just outside.

Of course, you could only use that tech at the highest levels -- the cost is too high.

I think this ref did a credible job, if not stellar, job last night. She kept the game under control, she got the tough decisions right, and most of what she got wrong was wrong in ways you can understand why she got wrong.

eriko: "But, to go back to my NFL example above -- that call also rates a support."

I actually remembered that analogy while watching the replays of that call and thought "This is one of those 'support' calls like eriko was talking about." Technically probably a bad call, but impossible to hold the ref to such a high standard.

There was a moment at the end of the broadcast where Bassett was sobbing into her coach's arms. One of her teammates was helping to console her, and she made the "bring the medic and quickly" hand gesture that one might make for a torn ligament or broken bone. I'm sure Bassett was close to passing out with some combination of exertion, emotion, and respiratory distress from crying, but seeing that familiar gesture outside of the run of play made you realize just how devastated she was.
posted by Rock Steady at 5:58 AM on July 2, 2015 [2 favorites]

Only England could find a worse way to go out than kicks from the spot.

But still, I have to heap nothing but praise on that team, and Basset tried the right play. That pass connects and Japan probably scores. Yes, it went horribly wrong, but you had to try and break that up, or you were done.

And then there's this. England's defense basically shut Japan down. One penalty, that wasn't, and one misplayed clear, and England falls.

Still, if the US wins, and I certainly expect them to, given how England handled Japan here, to me, England is the team of the Tournament. They were never supposed to come this far, and they damn near, hell, they *should have* been in the finals. But we play the game for a reason, and sometimes, those reasons are cruel.

I honestly think, though, that England can beat Germany Saturday. France almost did. The US did. I think England can. 3rd place may be cold comfort, but for a team that always lost in the QFs?

I said earlier that I was a bit scared of what Australia could become in 2019? I'm downright terrified of the 2019 Lionesses. The USWNT is *seriously* going to have to up its game. The world has changed. This is the last time individual talent is going to matter. Brazil learned that hard. Columbia learned that. We're learning that -- it's only that we have so much that we're still around.

Teams that play as teams are turning the tide, and they're only getting better. And as their nations realize "Holy cow, they can play. They're actually good. This is worth watching" and start supporting them, and more young girls say "i'm going to do that" and more old hands start teaching them, they get better and better.

England may come in 3rd. They may come in 4th. I would not be surprised, come 2019, if they're coming off a Euro championship and sitting on a group seed, and a favorite to win the title.

They went from nothing to a semi-final -- one they were close to winning -- in one cycle. There's no sign that they're slowing down.

If the 2019 final was ENG-AUS? I wouldn't be surprised.

Bear down, USWNT. The easy days are over.

And, in better discussions.

We're coming onto the last two games, which means, time to start talking awards!

Golden/Silver/Bronze Ball (Best/2nd/Third best player)
Golden Glove (Best GK)

Best Young Player (under 21)
All-Star Team

The Golden Boot is basically automatic, based on goals scored. So far.

Golden Boot: Célia Šašić GER (6)
Silver Boot: Anja Mittag GER (5)
Bronze: 8 tied, one active Carli Lloyd USA (3)

I think Hope Solo is currently *not* in the Golden Glove, because she hasn't done anything much!

I think Julie Johnston has a real argument for a Golden Ball slot.

I think the Golden Boot is kind of a joke this year with Germany ringing up the Ivory Coast and Thailand like that. I guess I have to hope for a Carli Lloyd Hat Trick.

Yes, I just caught the highlights (out at Canada Day celebrations yesterday, so I missed the game). Absolutely the right play, just caught the wrong angle and went in. Devastating. Hoping the Lionesses do well against Germany.

And I think the Japan-US final will be an interesting match; hopefully I will have the time to watch it because I really haven't seen much of this tournament, but what I have seen has been some great footy and I expect the final to be the same.

Good Morning!

The end is nigh. Four remain. After today, only two.

Today, we say goodbye to Edmonton, maybe the most dramatic city of the tournament. This is where the US was having fits with Colombia until the GK red card early in the 2nd half. This is where Australia almost caught out Japan. This is where England....well, almost took Japan to extra time until the clearance that went horribly wrong.

But today, we have one last game for Edmonton. One of these teams medals. Both go home, because this is the last weekend. It has been a month of dramatic highs and lows. 50 matches played so far. Two remain. Let's meet Match #51!

03 July 2015: Third Place Match

Germany vs. England, 15:00 CDT, Commonwealth Stadium, Edmonton

Broadcast: US=FOX, UK=BBC3, SIRI=95, XM=94

Germany: A walk through their group, both as befitting the #1 ranked team in the world and a team with a favorable draw. Gets Sweden in the round of 16, nominally a tough opponent ranked #5 in the world, but Sweden struggled badly in their group, barely making it to the round of 16, and Germany easily pushes them aside. Germany then gets France in the quarterfinals, and struggles badly, giving up several great chances but manages to hold on, and wins in a dramatic fashion, with a final save by Nadine Angerer in kicks from the spot. Then they meet a resurgent USWNT, having discovered that one striker is better than two, and fall 2-0.

England: Unseeded, they come out of the group second, which actually proves a bit of an advantage in that they don't end up in the side of the bracket with Germany, France and the US. Drawing Norway first, they handle them surprisingly well and move on. A surprise burst of early goals against Canada send the hosts home in the quarterfinals, given England a chance at the finals if they can beat Japan in the semifinals. But, in the most dramatic moment in the tournament so far, with a minute left in stoppage time, a failed clearance results in an own goal and they fall, 2-1, to the defending champs -- a team that they had held to remarkably few quality shots or crosses until that moment.

So: Germany, the favorites at the start, showing a bit of a weakness to a pressing defense, against England, a team that has shown that it has a *very* pressing defense and can shut down the best passing attacks, but hasn't show the ability to score at will, though they can punish you quickly if you make mistakes. England, at this stage, has very little to prove, but a third place medal would still be a great achievement for them. Germany, with two championships and a second place, is looking at this as a missed opportunity regardless, but third is always better than fourth.

Can Germany find a way through? Can England's offense step up to match the defense?

We will find out later today!

And, we have the Golden Ball shortlist.

Saori Ariyoshi (Japan),
Lucy Bronze (England),
Amandine Henry (France),
Julie Johnston (USA),
Carli Lloyd (USA),
Aya Miyama (Japan),
Megan Rapinoe (USA),
Celia Šašić (Germany).

I'll put my opinions in a separate comment.
posted by eriko at 7:20 AM on July 4, 2015

In case you're wondering -- 5 out of the 7 times before, the Golden Ball went to a player on the Championship team. The two years that they didn't. In 1999, the US won, Sun Wen of China got the Golden Ball (and shared the Golden Boot). In 2007, Germany won, Marta (Brazil) got the Golden Ball and Golden Boot. In both cases, they were playing for the runner up team.

Okay. I'd eliminate Šašić, because she's scored exactly one goal outside the group stage that wasn't a penalty, and that was against Sweden, and then she had that miss. She had a hat trick against the Ivory Coast, but I wouldn't brag about that. Besides, unless Carli goes absolutely nuts in the final, Šašić is going to get the Golden Boot, but she won't be playing for the runner up team, so I don't think the Golden Boot+Runner Up= Golden Ball example will work here.

I would eliminate Megan Rapinoe, because if you're going to give it to an offensive mid right now, you would give it to Carli Lloyd or Aya Miyama. Carli has more goals, Miyama a higher work rate. Rapinoe does has a certain something when she's on, though. Obviously, if Rapinoe lights it up in the final, that changes.

Lucy Bronze rates a definite must see...if she's prominent today, she's a contender. I don't want to give her the Bronze Ball for about 11 reasons. If England wins today, she's a lock for the Silver, I think. If she scores a couple and they win, she has a real argument for the Gold.

Amandine Henry? I don't see it at all.

Julie Johnston. Really, to me, she's a compelling case for the Golden Ball. Giving a DF the golden ball is rare, but if there's any time you're going to do it, this is the time. Nobody has had an effect on a team like JJ has had on the USWNT. The only problem with this is that arguably Becky Sauerbrunn has been almost as good -- but the reason you give JJ the nod is that you see JJ up forward almost as much as you see her behind. Yes, she made that one mistake against Germany, pulling Popp down, but one mistake in six matches, compared to the number of outright saves she's made? If the USWNT wins in anything like a close game, it's hers.

I'm surprised to see Ariyoshi here -- I'm guessing "Hmm, a defender on a finalist who scored a goal, and we've put a defender on the other finalist here." I don't think she's a contender.

My three as of right now.

JJ
Bronze
Carli Lloyd.

Since all are playing, this could change -- The only one who is really static is Henry, who I don't think is going to get it. In particular, if Miyama scores and Japan wins, she's going to get the Golden Ball, and JJ will fall to Bronze, if she doesn't fall off completely.

The other two finalist lists.

Golden Glove (no, not the Baseball one, the Goaltenderkeeper one)

Nadine Angerer (GER)
Ayumi Kaihori (JPN)
Hope Solo (USA)

Young Player Award (Under 21)

Kadeisha Buchanan (CAN)
Ada Hegerberg (NOR)
Tang Jiali (CHN)

Again, my comments below)
posted by eriko at 7:48 AM on July 4, 2015

Glove is easy, IMHO. Angerer. She had a much harder time. Yes, she didn't make the final, but faced a lot more shots and made more saves against tougher teams late.

Solo gets nothing because her back line was too good -- plus that Jedi Mind Trick against Šašić, while good, but that's not good goal keeping, that's good mind games. But seriously, a good back line isn't good goalkeeping.

Kaihori is arguably #2 on the list, but she didn't have to face what Angerer faced. The reason she's on this list is they always put three, and well, she's in the final and Angerer isn't.

I'll admit I'm also saying "give Angerer one last award before she goes." But of the three names on this list? I think she's played the best goal in this tournament.

Young Player? Buchanan was a force for Canada. I don't remember the other two, so I can't automatically say "that's the one", but the fact that I remember Buchanan so vividly is a factor -- she was always on the ball, mainly because she was *always* getting the ball. She was a big factor in why Canada, with a really bad offense, got as far as they did, because she kept a lot of scoring chances against Canada from developing.

Then again, that hair stood out too -- but man, she was like JJ in the "That's my ball. I'll have that ball. THANK YOU BYE!"

Anybody got any highlights on the other two? One of the problems with young player is you often don't even know to look for them.

In the group stage, a team in each match is defined as the home team, they pick first and the other side picks a contrasting color, then the refs pick a top to contrast with both. In the knockouts, it's by points earned. Germany surely picked first, and picked their white tops, that forced England out of their whites.

And now we know that England does have another kit.

posted by TwoStride at 1:55 PM on July 4, 2015

Yeah. FIFA made the call that the Women's game would be referreed by women. I get that -- a good way to build the women's referee corps is experience. But at this level, the very top of the international game, I want the very best referees, period -- and the best way for the women to become good is for them to work with the best. A mixed corp of referees would have both helped build the women's corp by giving them experience and letting them work with the experienced men's corps of referees that has decades of experience at this level.

So, I think that was a mistake, and it has hurt this tournament. I would select the very best of the women's corp for the final, but I think that wouldn't hurt the tournament. There are excellent women's refs. There's just not enough of them for a 52 match international tournament -- one where there a number of games you cannot ref because of bias constraints -- you cannot officiate a game where your home country is playing, and until you have a lot of experience, they don't even want you officiating a game when a team from your confederation is playing.
posted by eriko at 2:03 PM on July 4, 2015 [1 favorite]

One thing I will hand the women's ref corp -- the assistant refs. Overall, they've done an excellent job running the lines and calling offsides. I can only recall a couple of times where they've blown that call either way, and out of this many matches, that's an outstanding job, and calling offsides is tough.

Compare that to the men's game, or heck, any of the top leagues. The AR corps here should be proud of themselves.
posted by eriko at 2:08 PM on July 4, 2015 [1 favorite]

Great point, Eriko. I'd love to see this be a sport that does more to pioneer mixed ref corps--women refs could offiate the men's games just as well. I just want the best in the world, period.

Ok, I am officially calling TSN out. According to their schedule , this game should be on their main network. Instead, they are showing US-Greece men's basketball and I assume the women's game is happening on TSN2 or some such.

Fucking unacceptable from my standpoint; I can't believe they disappeared the bronze medal game from basic cable in favour of what looks to be a meaningless friendly basketball game. You're the national rights holder for the tournament for fucks sake.

I sent them some nasty emails about their poor coverage of women's hockey during the Olympics (despite not being the rights holder they had live trackers for the men's games but not the women's); perhaps this time I should include FIFA in my email.

England third place. Best result ever for the side, and a nice recovery after the semifinal disaster.

The ref? Not good. Not good at all.

Germany? Really a disappointment. The #1, anything less than a medal has to be considered a disappointment.

Now there are two.

Tomorrow, it ends. One more match to decide it all.

And our table is that much closer to filled.

3. England (15 pts, +3)
4. Germany (11 pts, +14) (Qualifies for Olympic Women's Tournament)
(eliminated in Quarterfinals)
5. France (10 pts +7) (Qualifies for Olympic Women's Tournament)
6. Canada (8 pts +1)
7. Australia (7 pts +0)
8. China (7 pts +0) (loses on goals for (4 vs. 5))
(eliminated in Round of 16)
9. Brazil (9 pts +3)
10. Norway (7 pts +5)
11. Cameroon (6 pts +5)
12. Colombia (4 pts -1)
13. The Netherlands (4 pts -1) (loses on goals for (3 vs. 4))
14. South Korea (4 pts -4)
15. Switzerland (3 pts +6)

Germany needs to add speed--France, USA, and England often out-hustled them to loose/mis-hit balls--and someone with the killer instinct for goals.

And more creative building from the back (ahem, Angerer, legend that you are) would help them, too. I look forward to more from Daebritz in the future, though!

USA 2 - JPN 0.

I saw big red flags the way England shut down Japan. When their technical, accurate passes fail to get through, they get flustered. USA can play that style x 100.

Good Morning!

On a personal note, it has been an honor and a pleasure guiding you through this edition of the World Cup. It's had triumphs, tragedies, and of course, FIFA. We've had bad calls, like we always do, we've had bad weather, like we've always had, we've had truly mind bending plays and truly horrible ones. And, well, all World Cups have that one moment, good or bad, that marks them forever, and England's fall has, oddly enough, made this tournament one of the great ones. As tragic as it was, everyone will remember it. Every fan watching will remember where they were when that happened. It is now part of the lore of the game, forever.

I hope to see you all in the next big tournaments, which will be the 2016 Olympics for the Women and the 2018 World Cup for the Men. The Women's game continues to grow, and the fact that things like the limited coverage (though it's a lot better this year than 2011!) and the turf are causing such controversy proves the Women's game is growing.

Enough. We have unfinished business.

We began almost exactly a month ago, on June 6th, when Match #1, Canada vs. China, kicked off in Edmonton. Twenty-four teams started, all hoping to be here today. Today, Match #52 will kick off and there are only two teams left. What more needs to be said but the headline?

05 July 2015: Championship Final

United States vs. Japan, 18:00 CDT, BC Place, Vancouver

Broadcast: US=FOX, UK=BBC2,BBC3, SIRI=94, XM=94, CAN=TSN1, CTV, TSN3

This is not an accidental repeat of the 2011 World Cup final. This is, however, a rematch of the 2011 World Cup final. The USWNT, after rough start against Australia, puts them away and then struggles through the group, and then again in the round of 16 until a formation change leads them to possession domination against China and Germany and a trip to the final.

Japan had a easy walk through their group and bracket until they ran into the sleeper. England gave them fits, leaving them 1-1 in stoppage time until a break developed and then disaster struck England as a attempted clearance struck the bar and became an own goal, handing Japan their ticket to the final. England would go on to win the 3rd place game. Aside: Find a picture of Karen Basset with her medal. It'll heal your heart.

Vancouver being just over the border of the US means this will be, for all intents, a home game for the USWNT. One of two things happens tonight. Either Japan joins the United States and Germany as two time winners of the Women's World Cup, or the United States gain the third star.

Regardless, today, it ends. Somehow -- regulation, extra time, penalties. But the 2015 Women's World Cup will end this evening.

One of these two teams will be wearing a silver medal.

One of these two teams will be wearing another star.

See you this evening!

Hey, all. Was hoping to get some advice ...

I am in the UK. The match starts at midnight here, and I'd like to ... follow it. Somehow. Difficulty level: I have no television license, and I have not been able to find a single sports bar here that closes any later than 1 AM.

Any suggestions? Is there anywhere which will show the match on a delay rather than live? Is anyone doing some kind of live podcast? Perhaps just somewhere with good text commentary as it happens? Or should I just watch for an hour in a pub and then go home?

Any advice welcome!

Damn, I was hoping the final would be at some almost reasonable hour for me, like yesterday's bronze medal game, but no, it starts at two in the morning. Which is a bummer because the last world cup final between these two sides is one of the best games of football I remember watching, certainly the best major international final I've seen since 2000. I'm sort of half hoping my newborn throws a fit starting at about five to two so I can soothe him in my lap while watching the game.

Not actually hoping my newborn son throws a fit in the middle of the night.

No doubts here. Utterly convincing win for the United States -- Japan could only muster one goal, and was given another by an own goal by the US. Julie Johnston, alas, probably ended her Golden Ball campaign with that own goal, combined with Carli Lloyd going COMPLETELY NUTS with the goal scoring.

The US offense finally showed up. And how.

This is the Spanish equivalent of the English "A goal would appear to have occurred".

1) I am amused that Andrés Cantor calls her "Pinoe" too.

2) Cantor was just as surprised by Lloyd's first goal as Japan's GK was. He's like "gol?" then remembers "oh yeah, I have this thing I do" and goes "GOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLL!!!!"

3) I didn't notice Jill Ellis' shit eating grin on the original broadcast. I was probably too busy typing something here. That's priceless. Then again, I had the exact shit eating grin too. "Uncoachable? Coach this!"

4) He was more ready for Lloyd's second GOALLLLL!

5) He's just as impressed by Holiday's one time as I was. That was a sweet goal -- seriously, kids, if you can learn to one-time the ball on frame, you are much more effective than if you have to trap and shoot. One time strikers are deadly.

6) Holy cow, I thought he was going to die when Lloyd nailed it from the circle.

7) The Spanish for hat trick is "el hat tricko!" I did not know that. And, yes, "Golazo!" indeed. Goalzo has gotten overused, but a shot from the center circle over the GK's head is all Golazo, al the time.

8) After Heath's goal, he sounds like he's running out of batteries. "GOOAAaaaaaaaaaa." Come to think of it, he probably was.

Full list of awards, rather than my splatter as they were sort of announced last night on the broadcast.

FIFA Fair Play trophy.
France

Young Player Award (Best Under 21)
Kadeisha Buchanan (CAN)

Golden Boot (highest goalscorer)
Célia Šašić (GER)

Silver Boot (2nd highest goalscorer)
Carli Lloyd (USA)

Bronze Boot (3rd high goalscorer)
Anj Mittag (GER)

Golden Glove (Best Goalkeeper)
Hope Solo (USA)

Golden Ball (Best Player)
Carli Lloyd (USA)

Silver Ball (2nd Best Player)
Amandine Henry (FRA)

Bronze Ball (3rd Best Player)
Aya Miyama (JPN)

The Golden Boot used to be shared if number of goals was tied, there's now a tiebreaker (since the 2014 Men's WC, apparently.) If tied on goals, you go to assists. If tied on assists, as Šašić and Lloyd were, you go to minutes played, whomever played the fewest minutes wins, and that was Šašić. Since Lloyd went Beast Mode, there wasn't a tie for the Bronze.

Why do they go Gold/Silver/Bronze for Ball and Boot but not for Glove?

Not enough contestants, really -- for the GKs that are in contention, they're playing the entire WC. There are a lot more goal scorers, and there's no shortlist -- the Boot is simply who scores more, and the Ball is open to *anybody*, offense, defense or GK. There were eight on the shortlist for the Golden Ball, one of them was out when the shortlist was release (Henry) and she got the Silver Ball. There were only three on the short list for the Golden Glove -- in this case it was Angerer, Solo and Kaihori.

But really, the reason is "That's what they award."

Angerer ended on two losses and six allowed, and Kahori, well, you give up five in the final, you're not going to win the goalkeeping award. Solo ended on no losses, and three allowed, and one of those was an own goal -- and when you compare here to Angerer over the same number of matches, it's six allowed for Angerer vs. one allowed for Solo.

Admittedly, that's as much on their defenses as themselves, but goals allowed is one of the big stats for GKs. And, in the end, despite racking up 10 goals against the Ivory Coast and 4 against Thailand, Germany ended up +14, and the US ended up +11. Wipe out those 14, and Germany is +0.

That's why Germany went home without a medal and the US went home with a trophy. When they needed the offense, it wasn't there. When the US needed the offense, it was.

As an English person it is not easy to say this, but congratulations America, on winning the World Cup!

TWO WORLD WARS AND THREE WORLD CUPS, DOO DAH DOO DAH!

Okay, that was mean. I'm sorry.

But seriously. Hell of a job by England to get to the semifinal, then recover from the Most English Loss Ever Lost.

This makes it better.

And I'm serious. It's a damn shame you and the other FA's on that group of islands can't figure it out with the IOC and we're going to have to wait until 2019, but seriously, England is becoming a power in the Women's game. I fully expect Germany and France to have many more bad days in the future, and I'm really looking forward to watching the Lionesses again. They're going to be a real force in the game, and that makes everybody else better.

And, well, I'm a little less worried about the US -- but we're still going to have to step up our game. The game is getting better world wide.

The teams that really need to learn this? The South American teams -- and that's true on both the Men's and Women's side. You can't win with just great players anymore. Marta can't carry you to the Final. Neymar can't carry you to the final, and it showed.
posted by eriko at 9:50 AM on July 6, 2015 [1 favorite]

Huh. The US had 48% possession.

Yeah, but there's "possession" where you're playing onesie-twosie in the midfield desperately trying to find a hole in your opponent's hulking defense, and then there's "possession" where you're driving the ball straight down the field to power it into the box.
posted by KathrynT at 10:19 AM on July 6, 2015

I still think the Women's game isn't ready for 24 teams, and it sure as heck isn't ready for 32. The only reason Célia Šašić wins the Golden Boot is a hat trick vs. the Ivory Coast. You could argue that Costa Rica, Nigeria and New Zealand are ready or close, and if Spain can fix the nightmare coach problem, they'll probably get much better, but Thailand, Ivory Coast, Ecuador and Mexico were just embarrassed badly.

And it sets up that bad situation where, if all the seeds advance and win in the round of sixteen, you're going to have four of the seeds playing each other in the QF, but two of them playing non-seeds in the QF, because there aren't eight seeds to fill the QF rounds. That's why you had the France-German QF, and if Brazil had won, you would have had the Japan-Brazil QF. With 16, you have four seeds, the first round of the knockouts is the quarters, with the group winners vs. the group seconds, if all the seeds win, they meet in the semifinals.

In a 32 team 8 seed tournament, like the Men WC, if all the seeds win and advance through the round of 16, then you have the 8 seeds playing in the QF.

But the point of this particular seeding was to make sure that Canada played in Vancouver as much as possible and that France played in Montreal as much as possible. I still think the way they did this was a bad mistake. Putting the host in Group A to play the first game? Honored tradition. After that? You draw the other seeds into the groups. Heck, I would have even been good with then *assigning* the groups to cities to put France into Montreal and Canada into Vancouver -- so, you say "France has been drawn into group B. Group B will play in Montreal." Not a problem with that, makes the draw fair and make sure you sell lots of tickets to the Francophiles.

But by doing it they way the did, they put the US and Canada on to the apparent easy tracks (the non-seed QFs.) Of course, the draw took the US right off the Easy Track and into the Group of Death, and then Canada and Brazil handed the Easy Track to England and Japan.

And then, that went wrong again when Sweden turned into Pod People Sweden, the US went catatonic, and Brazil went wrong. Because Tournaments!

But the draw was wrong, and it's the least appreciated controversy of the tournament. Hopefully, they've learned that lesson.

Controversy #2 you may not have noticed. Toronto? Calgary? Why are we in Moncton when we're not in the Largest or Fourth Largest City in Canada? Why not have the US based in, oh, Southern Ontario and get all that Sweet US money?

Well, the Pan Am games start in Toronto on July 10th. The Calgary Stampede started July 3rd. In the former, they were worried about turnaround time, in the latter, they were worried about setup/teardown (though surely they could have held group stage matches there, right?) So instead we end up overusing Edmonton, which is rather north of the border, though not a small city, and Moncton. There are four suburbs of Chicago with a larger population than Moncton -- Joliet, Aurora, Naperville and Elgin. Just to give you a sense of scale here.

So, yeah -- if you're wondering why some of the games looked a little thin on ticket sales, well, midweek games, in the middle of nowhere, and well, you get to New Brunswick. It's not easy. Beautiful place, don't get me wrong. But that was a really bad call for a world-wide event. If you're thinking "Why not Halifax?" No stadium.

Sigh. It has flaws.
posted by eriko at 10:28 AM on July 6, 2015 [1 favorite]

But in the end, the good still outweighs the bad.

And the Women's game is still building. It's not as big as the men's game. I hope some day it will be, but it isn't now. It's grown. We have a tournament, this was our 7th. It started with 12 teams, it now has 24. There were no women's professional leagues. There are now many.

It builds. It will have setbacks, of course. The men's game does. It just has a century more progress, and, of course, a society that accepted men playing sports far long than than it has accepted women playing sports. But that has changed, and continues to change.

And last night, we saw something that we never saw before. We saw people on the streets and in the parks watching the World Cup -- Watching the Women's World Cup.

And they cheered and cried and yelled and screamed along when our team won -- and it didn't matter what sex they were. They were our team. Ours.

I believed that we could win.

I never believed so many would be watching with me. :-)

And for one minute, it didn't matter. One team. One nation.

And if you don't think the world can change for the better? This happened.

That is Abby Wambach, kissing her wife, because she just won the World Cup.

Read that sentence again.

Read it one more time.

Think about it. Go back to the 1990s. Now, ask yourself this:

Did you ever imaging that you could read that sentence and it would be a simple factual statement?

(I have to say I'm still a bit disgruntled that this thread got so much less traffic than the men's last year, but maybe in 2019...)

The game is building. We didn't even have a thread is 2011!

And, by the way. I need to introduce you guys to two goals, if you don't know them, because they are the two most important goals in American Soccer right now.

Yes, Carli Lloyd was AMAZING last night, and Lauren Holiday goal was perfect. But they were not the most important goals in American Soccer.

They were two.

Wambach 122' USA vs. BRA 2011 World Cup.

Donovan 91' USA vs. ALG 2010 World Cup.

Both saved the tournament for the US. We didn't win either tourney. Both goals put the scorers into the pantheon of US Soccer, never mind everything they'd already done. And both goals basically doubled the number of fans in the US of the game the moment they were scored.

And both were fast -- from deep in all the way down to the opposite goal in remarkably little time.

If you haven't seen them, enjoy them. If you have seen them? You never forgot them. Someone someone else described it best. "I dumped a beer when Lloyd got the hat trick. I broke a tabled when Wambach got that header in 2011. It was the table I had to buy after I broke the last one when Donovan scored in 2010!"

And god I wish ESPN had the tournament, Ian Darke is SO much better at calling a game!

Also considering that 2019 is in France that would generally preclude England hosting in 2023 (you'd imagine Asia/Australia being front runners) and by 2027 you'd like to think that South America/Africa might be in the running (as well of course the US).

So, England 2041!
