Citylab: "Launched last week, Collage, The London Picture Map allows you to trace London’s visual history street by street. Supported by the City of London Corporation, it’s the result of two full years of digitizing and mapping images from the London Metropolitan Archive and the Guildhall Art Gallery, which together possess the largest collection of London images in the world."

The sheer quantity of images, even way out from the centre, really is remarkable.

Check out Berwick Street (the heart of old Soho) for 1976's Love Shop!
Until very recently, the Raymond Revue bar was also located here. Soho's been relentlessly gentrified in the past 30 years, but there's still one or two survivors of the sex industry there.
[Gosh!, London's finest comics emporium, is located straight opposite the Love Shop site today. I'm told they once had complaints from an escort at the "champagne bar" opposite, who claimed the long queue of virginal teenage nerds waiting outside the shop for an Alan Moore signing was scaring off her usual passing trade.]

Gosh! moved from a site opposite the British Museum. I don't know what that says about either the shop or the museum or Soho, but it must say something, even if it's just a tedious and prosaic thing about ground rent.

Incidentally, am I right in thinking that Collage has been going a very long time? I have vague memories of finding an early 19th century drawing with my flat in it (the first floor window on the left) on there at least fifteen years ago, but this is a newer and considerably less opaque implementation of it.
