Gravity Falls, just outside Saint Petersburg

2D Among Us (on Instagram, on VK Russian social network) is an Art Project by a group of Russian photoshoppers, originally to insert characters from 2D cartoons into real photos, from Woody Woodpecker and The Road Runner to Bambi and The Little Mermaid and The Iron Giant to Sprited Away and Evangeleon and Sailor Moon, to Adventure Time and Gravity Falls and (obviously) The Simpsons but quickly expanding into 3D animation like Big Hero 6 and Toy Story and Kung Fu Panda, not to mention characters from games, from Mortal Kombat to Portal.

Most notable about many of their pieces are the use of photos highlighting some of the shabbier scenes in their country.
More recently, they have tried playing with elements of classic paintings, and dropped in some live actors out of their element.
And in a new, separate project, cat_photoshop just adds cats.

Yep. This has been a thing for a while now. RocketNews24 covered it in Nov. 2015:
Real-world Russia is a surprisingly awesome backdrop for anime girl Photoshop fan art【Photos】

Please forgive me if I don't feel entirely comfortable clicking through to a Russian social network right now.

This is great. I especially liked the classic painting ones and of course the cats.

I guess I'm not going to be able to listen to that Lloyd Cole album again without thinking of Ariel.

Ukrainian artist Alexey Kondakov does this well with classic paintings: 1, 2, 3.

Am I missing something? This just seems like run of the mill Photoshop stuff to me. I don't mean to be obtuse. I will say that Kabanos's link is pretty neat.
