I can't watch this video until I get off work, but I must ask: Does it mention how James Cameron's Avatar used Papyrus as the logo font and as far as we know nobody even tried to stop them?

New York magazine did a critical piece on SNL in the mid-nineties, and while a lot of the criticisms were valid--especially how Sandler, Spade, Farley et al. had basically taken over the show with bro humor--the best line was from Lorne Michaels, who told the writer that they were probably overdue for one of the periodical "Saturday Night Dead" pieces.

Papyrus is the worst font, I am glad that ten years after Avatar Ryan Gosling has vindicated my poster-influenced rant that my friends all ignored.

Well... if you watch the bonus material on the DVD for Helvetica, there is an interview where Helvetica gets the blame for the Vietnam War. That's a little worse than Papyrus has managed....

There’s a Coptic church near me that has an Egyptian festival every year. They have a big banner that uses Papyrus, which is really the only appropriate use of that font ever.

I'm old enough to remember the ubiquity of "The Mary Tyler Moore Font" (Peignot) and "The Garfield Font" (Cooper Black, which is currently experiencing an inexplicable revival). And how The Price Is Right's designers made their own font, named Pricedown, which semi-ironically was also used for the logo for Grand Theft Auto.
I told before how I was seduced by rub-off letters in the 1980s in Bookman Swash, and later, working in an Accounts Receivable department, changed all the Microsoft Excel-made invoices from Times New Roman to Bookman Old Style. I'm no longer proud of that.

This, this is the type (ha) of post that makes me rejoice my lethargic procrastination aspect as I do not have a handy hacker toolkit, ah, handy, and thank goodness, as hacking MiFi even briefly to inject a bit of css that triggers a certain site wide font even for so brief a moment, would get me in rather more trouble than it's worth, but... no don't think about it. I'm not sure if Gosling is actually a good comedic actor but he is a fantastic dramatic actor who does comedy quite a bit and that makes me like him all the more.
Also, the only person on the planet who actually cares enough about Avatar to want a sequel (much less 4) is Cameron.

I love that DoctorFedora made the Undertale reference. Papyrus the Skeleton, in my opinion, is one of the great modern characters, not just of video games, but of fiction.

The amount of money poured into making something so utterly mediocre is one of the most bewildering things about Avatar. I'm not a biologist, so I can't say for sure whether the movie's biology is as surface-level as its plot, character motivations, physics or graphic design, but odds are pretty good.

I'm not, either, but it is. There's huge biological holes in the realm/world or whatever, everything from tamed and rideable flying lizards that share a symbiotic psychic relationship with their captors/riders to a giant and apparently essential fairy-tale grade world tree to, ugh, the way the Navi mate, right on down to the amount of apparent bioluminescence in places it shouldn't exist at all because it'd just make a given species easier to eat.
That movie probably drives evolutionary biologists bonkers, if they regard it all.
I don't think we'll see a movie or media property like Avatar ever again. The only reason it was a box office success is because it came out right in a particular sweet spot of curiosity about this newfangled 3D cinema. Including myself, tons and tons of people that only rarely go to see movies in theaters went to see Avatar.
It was very much this random and meaningless spectacle, not unlike a staged train wreck or Evel Knievel trying to jump over a river.

I'd have given Cameron a pass on the "unobtainium" bit if the rest of the screenplay hadn't seemed like an un-revised first draft too.

To be fair to Cameron, it's hard when you're ripping off a great film like Princess Monoke and you're trying to make it seem like you're not, but you don't have enough creativity to veer away from the source material in any meaningful way. You do your best.
In the Northeast there is a well-regarded college that now offers a music therapy degree, which is a real program that people treat seriously and pay exorbitant tuition to attend, and which was originally suggested as a joke by several members of the college who thought it was hilarious that the administration took their sarcastic suggestion seriously. That's "unobtanium." The Core. Avatar. Unobtanium is a joke. You aren't actually supposed to use it as a name, for God's sake. But some people don't have the altitude for jokes, and real consequences result.

I came out of Avatar and RANTED about this to the folks I saw it with. It just killed me how utterly LAZY this was as a font choice ... like it was intended to convey the exoticism and foreignness etc etc of the Navi race, which, obviously, is dumb in so many ways. It's like when people use that awful wonton font for any asian-related copy.
Somewhat predictably, the people I was with did not feel as strongly about fonts as I did ... but I did get more traction with my second-biggest-nitpic, "unobtanium." JFC, I feel you, Kattulus. The default is strong with this one.

The power of marketing. Or at least the perceived power of marketing before faced with actually having to get people to buy these polished Papyrus-captioned turds. This could turn into some execs who retire to spend time with their families or go off to work on 'special projects'.

I enjoyed it in 3D as a giant animated 1970s prog-rock album cover come to life but I haven't felt the need to see it again and don't really need to see multiple sequels.
