The first set of them, I got it perfect. I have been going downhill since.

Great link, thanks!

6/6. It got easier once I realized that I could click on the most ambiguous cover and thus learn its name.

At long last my spotty and dubious knowledge of kanji has finally served some useful purpose. (The Japanese translation of the name of one book was prominently left unblocked.)

Oh my god, this is the worst - I could play this until they literally ran out of book covers, forgetting to sleep and eat.

This is so good! Hours of fun!

Also, I think the absolute most inexplicable covers are for Oliver Twist.

This is great.

I made 0 mistakes except for the mistake of not muting the window, then I got startled by the congratulatory applause and spilled coffee on myself.

I played two rounds and got them both flawlessly, so I should probably quit while I'm ahead.

(And WTF is up with this cover design for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? I swear I thought it was an edition of Lolita at first.)

Not too hard but then I tried to drag the pretty Lolita cover into Three Men in a Boat to stir up some controversy and the site crashed.

Aaaah, I've got things to do today and I can't stop playing this. This is the best/worst thing ever.

Right? This is the best game ever for book nerds!

What fun! (Because I'm really good at it!)

This is fun and harder than I expected.
posted by chavenet at 7:50 AM on June 4, 2018

This was super fun! I'm not half as well-read as the average me-fite, but I was still able to get most of them right (sometimes all of them right) by clicking one, getting the title, and applying reason.
posted by FirstMateKate at 7:52 AM on June 4, 2018 [1 favorite]

Perfect and then I stopped so I wouldn't wreck my perfect.
posted by chococat at 8:03 AM on June 4, 2018 [2 favorites]

I played through two games perfectly and think I should probably stop while I can. I do wonder why it seems so logical to me what the pairs are, though. I can pretty much see them all at the start. It's weird.
posted by Margalo Epps at 8:09 AM on June 4, 2018

both "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and "Oliver Twist" messed up a string of perfect runs for me - in both cases because of the sheet WTF-ery of the second covers.
posted by Paladin1138 at 9:06 AM on June 4, 2018 [1 favorite]

It would be better if they had more than two covers for a lot of books and were able to mix and match different combinations. Also, it was pleasing to see editions that I actually had (Catch 22, for example, or some of the orange Penguin books).
posted by Grangousier at 9:31 AM on June 4, 2018 [1 favorite]

Yeah, they need to get more covers because now that I've played several rounds I pretty much recognize the ones I didn't already know. Right now the game seems to be best if your short-term memory isn't good.

I chose.....poorly

What is with those Oliver Twist covers anyhow? Got me too. Can someone explain that to me? (I haven't run into Charlie and the Chocolate Factory yet, so I can't comment on that).

OMG I am really, really good at this. Why? Why do I excel at THIS, of all things??

yes, where does this go on my resume.

(And WTF is up with this cover design for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? I swear I thought it was an edition of Lolita at first.)

The literal exact thing I came to say. I thought it was an error at first.

Did we not do a thread on those Penguin covers at the time? IIRC it’s some kind of edition for adults to read with more grown up branding - They are all bad but that one is super awful.

I made 7 mistakes and it told me I am useless.

I love this so much.

You made 7 mistakes
USELESS!

I read this in Immortan Joe's voice.

I am much better at this than I would have ever suspected. Perfect, in fact. I must say that my first clue was the wrench and the "this book will change your life" quote.

I was actually impressed by how many I could identify by contextual clues. I was similarly impressed by the ones that made no fucking sense at all.

I actually flat out recognize a bunch of them. Guess I hnag out in bookshops and eye the latest trade dress on 1984 or whatever a lot.
posted by Artw at 12:16 PM on June 4, 2018 [2 favorites]

I want the version where they show you 3 covers and you guess the title.

My God, that popped up on the second round for me and I hadn't started it yet before coming here to read the comments, but obviously that was Lolita and I wouldn't have hesitated a second. Now I'm quitting while I still have a perfect score. And also, WTF?
posted by bongo_x at 1:01 PM on June 4, 2018 [1 favorite]

6/6, 5/6, 5/6, 6/6, but I had to guess in all four rounds when I should be able to tell them on sight. I've lost so much of my bibliophilic talent in this post-literate age I could weep.

The first set I made one mistake, I'm "pretty good" apparently. Cool. This is fun. Off to burn through the rest of the afternoon playing this game!

I am SO GOOD at this!

Oh, fun. Thanks for posting this, slogger!

I got it perfect the first time out and then my RSS reader crashed before I could tweet it to brag. Argh.
