The Onion: As fake as FoxNews, but a helluva lot funnier.

The Onion isn’t fake. It’s just literature. It’s the realest thing out there. I’m being serious, they are killing it lately.
Just had to get that off my chest. I won’t hear the Onion being called fake or compared to Fox.

Way back in ancient 1996 I had a friend studying abroad who I sent paper printouts of Onion articles so they could "keep up with the news back home". They had never heard of the Onion, so hilarity ensued. It took months before they figured out it was all a big bunch of jokes; it was the person-on-the-street segments always using the same people that gave it away.

Man, of all the awesome satire out there, I have to give the Onion special props for its LGBT-inspired humor over the past two decades.

Way too many to list here, but one classic that always makes me laugh:

Masculine Halloween Costumes For Your Effeminate Son (YT)

"The police report that the sudoku killer will kill either 1, 4, or 9 victims next."

Plus the joke after that one, which is way dark so I won't quote here but I found so funny, likely because it speaks to my own fears.

Hard to whittle down all the good Onion articles, but here's a recent one that had me LOLing:

Apple Introduces Revolutionary New Laptop With No Keyboard

Tech Trends is wonderful. I think the HP Cloud episode is my favourite so far, just because I think I've worked with that marketing guy. "That is definitely something that people do, and they will be doing it with HP" and "We have 4G, 5G, 6G, really, all the Gs. We have App!" set my teeth so perfectly on edge.

I love their longform stuff as well. Sex House is so completely wrong and so completely right at the same time, and if you have not binge-watched Helcomb County Municipal Lake Dredge Appraisal you have no idea what quality TV is all about.

I love how a great Onion headline can turn on a single word:

This story's also a great example of how, just when you think the joke's over, the final sentence gives the knife one last full rotation.

I was reminded of Dept. Head Rawlings around early 2017, thinking wistfully: he wouldn't put up with this business.

The single most memorable Onion piece I read was a news brief that I can't find any longer. It was about a man daydreaming about a painless way to kill his entire family and burn the house. It was so simple, so plain, so real -- I wonder if they didn't take it down because it was too disturbing. (That, or it was anthologized.)

Also, I've had a weird one-sided relationship with the concept of Jean Teasdale for years. There is something in me that is terrified of becoming her. Taken together, I think the Jean Teasdale columns are as good as a novel.

Similarly, in the mid-90s they had a story after the TWA Flight 800 disaster about the FAA mandating longer bomb fuses on airplanes that was hilarious at the time specifically because it was so dark and horrible so soon after the accident. The story was off their site for a long time so I'm kind of surprised to find it there now.

Let's not forget to mention The Onion's Buzzfeedy spinoff ClickHole, which recently produced its own spin-offs called PatriotHole and ResistanceHole. My favourite part of that being that both PatriotHole and ResistanceHole are just filtered and rebranded portals for viewing articles that originally ran on ClickHole itself.

My other favourite thing about ResistanceHole is that it proves how intellectually and comedically bankrupt the right actually is, because look at the hilarious shit that the "liberal media" can cook up to poke fun at itself.

Disney Finds Dozens Of Unauthorized Characters Appearing Inside Theme Park

While security reportedly kicks out an average of 20 unauthorized characters each day from the theme park and Disney Family Breakfasts at onsite hotel properties, sources stated that nearly all return to the premises. Disney workers claimed that some reenter park property within just hours of their expulsion, citing in particular a muskrat named King Stumpy as well as a boisterous prospector character calling himself Grandpappy Gizzards, who has been forcibly removed from Frontierland every day since mid-February.

Roof on Fire Claims Lives of 43 Party People
"I tried shouting to the people on the dance floor that the roof was on fire and that they should exit the premises immediately, but they seemed unfazed by the danger," firefighter Michael Pitti said. "I just kept shouting, 'The roof! The roof! The roof is on fire!' and so forth, but they just went right on dancing, insisting that they didn't need any of our water and that we should let the motherfucker burn."
...
"DJ Phreek Malik was spinning in a manner so hot, these party people were willing to give up their lives for a few extra minutes on the dance floor," New York City fire commissioner Thomas Von Essen said. "Even as a 50-foot-high wall of flames surged toward them, they continued to dance, throwing their hands in the air and waving them as if they just didn't care."
...
The fire is New York's deadliest since 1978, when 117 party people burned, baby, burned to death in a South Bronx disco inferno.
