Meet Miri, the newest addition to the house of Maru and Hana. A two-month kitten that was rescued from a gutter, Miri will probably soon join Maru and Hana on their scientific investigations of how many tiers of toilet paper rolls you can jump over, how many plastic balls before a walkway is impossible to cross, and how many litres is a liquid cat. (Maru still isn't sure what to make of her yet.)

This makes me so want to get a set of clear bowels to replicate that Nobel worthy study on cat fluidity!

Miri is adorable, but on the evidence of the videos so far made, seems to be a normal cat like Hana and not the creature of legend that Maru is. But who can be Maru but Maru?

I can’t believe Maru got on that swing! Getting off of the swing was not exactly graceful but it looked like he really most definitely meant it to look exactly that way no problem here.

I think Hana’s gotten weirder over time so there’s hope for Miri also.

I love this! Welcome, Miri! It's been a long time since I've checked in on Maru and his antics. I can't believe he's 13...

We have a strict 1-cat-per-bedroom-max rule that has kept us from becoming crazy cat people over our lives. While we currently have a one-bedroom surplus, we anticipate downsizing in the next few years and don't wish to put ourselves in a near-future imbalance... so no kitten for us, no matter how much every available cat tempts us.

We have a strict one-cat-per-lap rule, and any exception would require a majority vote (50% + 1) of all household members (including the cats). Needless to say, an exception has never been approved.

yeah...we have a 1:1 ratio (aka not being outnumbered) rule, so 2 cats it is. I barely can find space in my small cluttered house for 2 litter boxes. but I'm very glad this little kitten has found a home, especially one we already know is so awesome for cats!!!

I can’t believe Maru got on that swing!

Many years ago, I was wandering around New York on a Sunday morning when I passed a playground and spotted a cat there in one of those kiddie swings with a cage surrounding its seat.

The cat was sat bolt upright but seemed quite unperturbed by the fact that its human was pushing it back and forth in the swing through a angle of about 45 degrees. Still not sure who was humouring who in that relationship.

From the blog it looks like Maru is adjusting well to the new kitten, but Hana is still hissing at it.

How long does it typically take for the resident cats to accept a new cat or kitten?

creature of legend that Maru is

Maru is a Scottish Fold cat without the eponymous Fold mutation--which is good for him, since the floppy ears come with unavoidable arthritis. (As a non-folded-ear cat, Maru is immune, but has the round face and temperament characteristic of Folds.) I don't know offhand why his owner chose to adopt stray kittens after Maru, but I would be surprised if the ethics surrounding Scottish Folds weren't an aspect of her decision making about future kittens. There is absolutely nothing sad about Maru himself as a cat and at the time he was a tiny kitten, the early onset arthritis connection to the floppy ears wasn't as well known as it is today, so let me be super clear that I don't necessarily think his owner has done anything wrong or that no one should be going "oh, CUTE" at Maru. But the breeders of Scottish Folds have not exactly covered themselves in glory, and even if I wanted a cat who was unaffected by the arthritis... well, finding a cat breeder who doesn't use affected (and therefore fold-eared) cats is just about impossible.

Anyway, this kitten was apparently found in a storm drain and Hana came from a local vet, so I think they look like "regular" random bred cats instead of Maru's distinctive look because that's exactly what they are. Purebred cats are pretty common on the "cute cats with online Presences" scene, so they start to look pretty familiar even if you don't know what you're looking at if you like to look at cute cat photos. I see a lot of Scottish Folds and British Shorthairs in particular--particularly for some reason "golden" British Shorthairs. (I don't know if anything unethical about them fwiw, but they have appealing squishy round faces that don't look like they ran into a wall.)

Maru is a levetating cat without the eponymous Fold mutation--which is good for him, since the floppy ears diminish the ability to float out of cardboard enclosures.

Does anyone know why some cats seem to love squeezing themselves into tight containers so much? Just curious.
