Game designer and art director Daniel Solis has been sharing the results of his experiments with machine learning algorithms that can be trained to generate art: Generated covers for The Ultimate Board Game were fun, as were his collection of impossible birds (shared previously). His latest: These New Yorker Cartoons Do Not Exist--new cartoons generated based on a data set of old cartoons from the magazine.

(It's been 19 years since my last post, and I really thought I should contribute back to the site again before I ticked over the 20 mark. Thanks to all of you for informing and entertaining me for all those years while I lurked!)

it's a ziggy!

this scratches some very deep itch i didn't know i had. i think the therapist is my favorite - like of course an ai trained on the new yorker understands the ideas of putting degrees on your wall. i wonder if these types of programs boil away the surface detail to show you what is really prevalent in your images... or if it's just that some shapes (rectangles?) are easy to grasp. anyway thanks inkslinger!

AI-generated English captions look Armenian.

Generated covers for The Ultimate Board Game

A decade or two of Eurogames has trained me to expect that any celebrated board game will have a sour-looking seventeenth-century wool merchant of Antwerp on the box.

The Non-Yorker cartoons all need “Christ, what an asshole.” at the bottom.

The New Yorker should use these cartoons for the back-page caption contest.

Given how the captions came out of machine learning, I think this calls for some zalgo.

It occurs to me that "These are genuinely deeply disturbing to me." is a serviceable generic New Yorker cartoon caption.
