How cool!

Looks like she came in in the third inning. I was watching the game but the cold medicine crashed me sometime during the second inning and, once again, I missed history happen. Looks like I missed a Giants romp, too.

i saw this post on the train home from work today and nearly cried i was so happy about it.

like so many other kids, i fell in love with baseball at a young age and dreamed of playing professionally... until i was about four and one of my boy cousins told me i would never be able to because "girls don't play baseball". i played softball enjoyed it, but it never really filled my heart the same way. when i read corinne landrey's piece "when the sport you love doesn't love you back" a few years ago, i felt it so hard it was like i had written it myself.

since then there have been some changes. nakken is part of the coaching team for the giants. landrey is now director, baseball operations for the phillies. kim ng is the marlins' gm. bit by bit they're making spaces in baseball for girls like i was.

it's wonderful and awesome and i'm so happy about it i could cry.

On the one hand, I am glad this is a sort of low key ho-hum moment. On the other hand, why isn't a bigger deal made of this moment?

Sports and coaching has always been an "old boys network". Usually some old player or long time minor league coach is given the job because he goes drinking of golfing with the front office guys or the coaching staff. It seems as if now that analytics and lots of money are driving the changes in the game, teams are realizing that the best person for the job should get it, not just a loyal lapdog.

I would love to see her sense of humor come out in the form of her fake scratch her balls, spit out some tobacco juice, and pat the base runner on the ass while saying, "Let's go!" or some cliché.

I can't wait until women coaching in men's major league sports is boring -- but today, I am thrilled for her and for all the girls who see her on the field. It's so good for the whole sport to get new blood in!
