Still I think they had an ethical obligation to document that more thoroughly ... with dog pictures!!

Kudos to Ms. Rosenblatt and her presumed partner for their shared pet's hyphenated last name, but just this once I think I would have let the patriarchy win just so I could say "and this is my French bulldog, Nacho King."

The dogs are adorable, but JohnnyGunn's link makes me mad about the breeding aspects of this nonsense.

(Hugo, my mixed breed goober, just snored his total agreement at my feet)

...Could there not be some kind of compromise, like scaling the "meetups" back to every other week or something? I get that they're all friendly and casual and welcome all, but...

Well, it's kind of like this family that's in my community garden. We have a grill and a picnic table, and members are free to use both to have a cookout. And this one family has been doing that twice a week, pretty consistently. And....well, they're not turning away anyone else from coming by to chill out in another part of the garden, and there hasn't been a huge demand on the grill so far otherwise. But I sometimes just like sitting with some iced tea for an hour in the peace and quiet, and they're kind of always there and while they're perfectly pleasant people, sometimes you just want the place to yourself or you want to see other people, you know?

The other big single-breed meetup in NYC confines themselves to only two events a year.

EC, those pictures on your link are adorable. The big grey dog and the dachshund!

There is a fine line between having the right or the ability and playing by the rules versus respecting your neighbors or others that might be affected. I think that consideration of others even while doing something legal or ok by the rules and regulations is lost too often. I don't want to sound like and old guy get offa my lawn, but times they have changed.

Once a week doesn't seem all that bad, but NYC has a lot of dog parks, so it seems like they could rotate? Also, I have to admit I think meetups based on breed is kinda weird. Possibly because my dog is a full mutt. But again, it's just once a week and it seems like an odd thing to get so het up about.

It seems to me the problem is less that this meetup happens as that shitty dog owners bring their poorly socialized dogs to it, resulting in fights, which result in leashing of dogs, which results in more fights, etc. But maybe it's simply too large of a group for even reasonably well-behaved dogs to handle well.

They're using the space right. The real problem isn't them, the real problem is that there aren't more public third spaces like this.

I hope your area can get more third spaces for you soon.

It doesn't seem like "stop the meetups" shared a picture of their own dog so I will unfortunately have to rule against them on this technicality.

Not mentioned in the linked NBC story is that the complainer initially charged that the Frenchies didn't belong on the small dog side of the run because the size limit is 25 points. That basically disqualified them from my sympathy immediately.

They complained about the person who runs the “Frenchies of UES” Instagram account, calling her “holier than thou” and saying she’s “rude and looks down on other breeds of dogs.”

Yeah this person is nuts. HOWEVER, since the group attracts this many dogs from all over there seems to be no reason why they need to be based in a single dog park. They could stand to rotate that shit around to a few locations.

As someone who knows a pair of UES Frenchie owners (though nothing to do with this), this article basically writes itself. What is not said is that there's a heavy degree of classism which kinda is self-defining for UES French Bulldog owners, but also largely affluent gay men. I find it odd the article does not address this, it is like writing an article about Fire Island and talking about it is a popular vacation spot for single guys. I mean the main woman in the article's name is Madonna which might be her real given name but come on a UES Frenchie owner named Madonna. I used to go to a leather bar called Eastern Bloc owned by Anderson Cooper and I swear is less gay than this.

(Also after going through the Instagram page I'm fairly certain at least one pair of the dogs shops I've seen at the Park Slope co-op and who definitely does not use metal straws)

So which breed of small dog is considered lower class in the UES? Maybe a Cavalier King Charles spaniel?

Ain’t no rule says a dog can’t cover a shift at the Park Slope Coop.

(There probably is a rule.)

Half the dogs have Burberry scarves and I'm pretty sure at least one is a partner at Wachtell so there's no poor UES dogs. They'll complain about inflation but still file taxes in Florida to avoid income taxes.

geoff., I went to a winery in Sonoma where a woman freaked out because her (very cute) Frenchie started to drink out of the common dog bowl. "No, sweetheart! Mommy has different water for you!" she said, cracking open a bottle of fancy mineral water.

One hour once a week doesn't seem worth getting worked up enough to create an anonymous Instagram account about, unless what you really want to do is stir up crap in your neighbourhood. Sure, the Frenchies could--and probably should--rotate their meetup, but people who don't want to see them could also visit another of the easily accessible dog parks for that hour.

We have had two French bulldogs. Too many people are getting into breeding them without consideration for the bloodlines. The health problems that both of our dogs have had are a direct result of this unconscionable breeding for pure profit. They have been a trendy breed for a while now. Our first Frenchie, Aldo, was purchased from a woman in upstate NY in 2004. Through a blog post I wrote we were contacted by several owners in the NYC area who bought from the same profit driven breeder. All of her dogs had serious health problems. Some owners tried to hunt her down but she had moved and no one knew her whereabouts.
