The Magic Yarn Project - I was really moved by this, and feel the good people of MetaFilter would appreciate these people, and the work they're doing. Here's a short video and this is their Facebook page.

This made me a little teary eyed—it reminded me of the hat I made for my cousin’s preschooler, E, when she lost her hair because of chemo. I adapted the crochet pattern her mom found (I am a better knitter than crocheter), and E wore that hat constantly until her hair grew back. I was really touched by how much it meant to her, and it was just a little thing I could do to show her I cared.

Good for these people for making these playful wig hats. They will definitely make a difference in morale for these little ones going through chemo.

What a great idea! I wonder if they operate in the UK as well? I was looking at my yarn stash the other day, and though I can't sew too well any more I can still crochet.

I remember being a kid. I was never a kid with cancer. But if I had known any kid with wigs like these, I'd have been fully impressed.

When my daughter had cancer as a baby, the big craft thing done by volunteers was baby quilts, which multiplied until we had 4 or 5 of them, like this fun pink one. She did lose her hair completely and at some point a knitted hat, with fleece lining and little bear ears, appeared - not sure if a friend made this one though, though others did make smaller ones for indoor wearing. It's not the cold part of Canada but it's cold enough for a bald 2 year old to need a toasty hat.

Anyhow, the generosity of people to kids with cancer is mind blowing and life changing.

(Also, that was more than 10 years ago. She just started Grade 8 and even with some chemo hangover is a doing great despite the relatively dire prognosis given).

From the YT link: When Holly Christensen’s best friend’s daughter was diagnosed with cancer, she knitted a Rapunzel wig to cover up the hair loss. From this moment, the Magic Yarn Project was born. Now, at community workshops, volunteers of all kinds -- including incarcerated prisoners -- make colorful yarn wigs for kids with cancer, giving them a chance to be children again in their time of need.

Anyone can volunteer to knit these wigs! When I came across their site, it made me cry - and also made me so happy for the creative, generous people in this world. I'm dealing with an illness that causes joint paint, but this has inspired me to try to learn how to knit.
