I was like, "There had better be a hard genre switch or I'm going to be annoyed" about two seconds before it hit.

This looks god-awful. I love it.

This looks like it could be the movie that Lost City was aspiring to be.... I'm still not sure whether that means I should see it, or shouldn't.

I don't know why I know anything about this because I basically don't know who either Armie Hammer or Josh Duhamel are but I guessss Duhamel ended up replacing (and reshooting for?) Hammer after the whole whatever the hell that was about Hammer sexting people about cannibalism? thing?

I have to admit that I enjoyed this trailer way more than I expected to. Enough to watch it a second time. But now I don't really feel like I need to watch the movie. So, I guess that's a vote in favor of the trailer as a piece of media but a vote against it as a form of advertising. YMMV

I want to watch it but in a "this is going to be the perfect thing to put on when I'm sick as a dog" sort of way, y'know?

Jennifer Lopez is 53. That is genetics AND pilates.

Shockingly - unless there's a twist not hinted at in the trailer - she seems to wind up with the same man she was supposed to be marrying.

I can’t be the only who sees Josh Duhamel as a discount store version of Timothy Olyphant, can I? Just imagine what this film could have been, is all I’m saying.

This has a touch of crazypants Barb and Star energy, and I'm totally in.

I totally thought they were the same person and today I learned that they are not. Mind, boom.

Like I literally thought, hey, this movie could be fun, Josh Duhamel was delightful in Santa Clarita Diet!
posted by mochapickle at 5:47 PM on October 6, 2022 [2 favorites]

One of them is handsome, subtly hilarious, magnetic, capable of elevating dreck to watchable, good to great, and great to sublime. , and would be worth watching even if only while he was picking spinach from his perfect teeth. The other is Duhamel.

Though you could be forgiven for thinking Olyphant’s characters first names are all Marshall.

I’d honestly thought Timothy Olyphant was in that.

Ghidorah I am sliding into a mild panic because I am scrolling through their respective imdb pages trying to reassign them in my brain but I absolutely cannot tell the difference! Ha!

And yes, Timothy Olyphant was the one in Santa Clarita! But during the trailer for this I thought it was Duhamel! So!

I can't imagine mixing the two up, because Olyphant is amazing and Duhamel is whatever he is, but I find this discussion hilarious.

I... Am having the strongest sense it originally started from a fanfic of a show with action (like maybe any of the CW superheroes) but it was a meetcute AU at a wedding and the concept is bonkers enough to make it an original pitch. Anyway, Lopez really is one of the only women actors in her generation who could probably do this genre trolling because she's well-established in both. What's the equivalent? Bruce Willis in his heyday?

1. I absolutely had the thought while watching this that Josh Duhamel is the dime store Timothy Olyphant.

2. A couple years ago some friends couldn't believe that I'd never seen Pitch Perfect, so I watched it, loved it, moved onto the second one immediately, loved it, and then all my friends warned me that the third one was not nearly as good, because they were fools who didn't understand the profound and spiritual way I would connect with Rebel Wilson kicking enormous amounts of ass before blowing up a boat all to the tune of Britney Spears' "Toxic."

3. Anyway this would be objectively better with Timothy Olyphant but this trailer is really reaching for that "Blowing up a boat to 'Toxic'" energy and I've gotta respect that.

Josh Duhamel is objectively not a great actor and his bland pretty boy good looks should make him the big city fiance that gets dumped for the small town soulmate in every romantic comedy ever, but somehow he gets the leads.

The scheming and conniving Leo du Pres was one of the best things about All My Children (during one particular era of the show). Battle Creek was also a fun watch for the limited time it was on. I'm not saying Josh Duhamel is the best actor in the world, but he's more than proven himself as being a solid and entertaining choice for certain kinds of roles, and I'm more than willing to give him the benefit of the doubt in this. Sadly, I don't think he's talented enough to improve upon what I suspect will be a terrible script, but, I suppose, anything is possible.

I do find it interesting that Jennifer has paired herself up with a slightly younger man. I don't know if she thinks that will make her look younger in comparison or if it's a plot point in the movie.

The ages are weird. Jennifer Coolidge plays Duhamel’s mother and she’s only 12 years his senior.

I will bet $20 actual monies that the trailer is far superior to the actual movie.

The twist is that she's engaged to Duhamel but ends up marrying Olyphant and nobody notices, not even her.

The resemblance has been noted before.

Once again I'm not sure when or why I gleaned this but that's partly down to Duhamel being swapped in for the significantly younger Hammer.

I watched the trailer all the way through to get to the "totes worth it" part. Is there a longer version that contains it? Because this looks like it's being buried in January for a reason. All the trailer is missing is a foul-mouthed granny to enshrine it among Comedies So Broad They Stretch Across the Horizon.

Josh Duhamel was in my 6am circuit training class for a while, and he was always a sweet dude who seemingly just wanted to be there to do the thing. I've never worked out with Olyphant, unfortunately, so I have no basis for comparison there.

I cannot believe this has a whole discussion of Timothy Olyphant being mistaken for Josh Duhamel and no one has mentioned the whole Josh in Tim's Christmas Card story. It's hilarious and I have to admit, Duhamel rose a little in my estimation just for leaning in to it. My estimation for Olyphant was already sky-high, though, so all I could do was keep it in the "see? this is why he's the best" drawer.

The princess or the singer?

Tangent: For years I legit believed that the Dutchess of York had started up a music career after her divorce. (I also thought there were two different famous people named KAYN West and KAHN-YEH West, for former of whom I saw mentioned in print and the latter of whom I heard about on TV and the radio.)

Lemme try to explain it this way, sobsister:

The Pledge: Huh, J.Lo is in yet another Wedding movie, though I guess this one is a little cruder and raunchier than we're used to getting from her. Like a relic from the early aughts, really, wait what's this-

The Turn: Oh I see, we're going for a kind of "Die Hard at a Wedding" high concept pitch here, okay, that's cute, but maybe not enough of an idea to support a whole-

The Prestige: A whole cast of wedding guests starts singing "I'll Be" as a war-cry while the words "FROM THE DIRECTOR OF PITCH PERFECT" appear on screen.

I can't speak for everyone, but as an Old, I don't know that song and I've never seen that movie. So for me it's kind of like:

The Pledge: meh
The Turn: uh...
The Prestige: huh?

Navelgazer, that's perfection!

I was kind of zoning out during the middle with the guns and the quips (it spiked with a gasp of delight at Lopez's over-the-top fabulousness in that gorgeous deconstructed dress!) and then the wedding guests gamely singing along to the trailer soundtrack sort of brought me back in? It's deliberate crowd service in 25-foot letters but it made the whole movie seem so loopy and fun that it reeled me back.

Objection! Lost City was 100% what it says on the tin -- an entertaining bit of fluff.
