I Enjoy Being A Girl

Happy Pride Month! The first queer woman music artist I ever heard of was Phranc [Wikipedia]. Your All-American Jewish Lesbian Folksinger Tupperware Salesperson. I'm sure many have favorite songs, but here I will share Phranc: Full Life Interview [1h12m], which is a 2021 biographic interview that covers just about everything. The Tupperware documentary mentioned in that interview is Lifetime Guarantee: Phranc’s Adventures in Plastic [1h, Vimeo link]. Bonus: Celebrating LGBTQIA Pride Month: A Visit With Phranc [51m], a glorious Pandemic-vision interview aimed at a younger crowd where Phranc shares her life and her art and teaches paper bow tie making. posted by hippybear (11 comments total) 24 users marked this as a favorite

Hippybear, you are hard on my music budget and I really appreciate it! I am one of the lucky people who learned about Phranc today. I'm listening to the interview, and it's great.

I remember seeing her in L.A. (vaguely; I was with bad influences). What a great voice. I remember her song about being on the swim team at SaMo College.

I saw Phranc in 1995 in Seattle and she had the whole place on their feet, hands in the air, singing "I'm a Life Lover!" and we still talk about that show to this day.

Those of you who enjoyed the Bent By Nature project from last year will be pleased to know that, just two days ago, Phranc gave us permission to put up her two live radio sessions from 1987 and 1991. Those will be up in the next month or so, I hope.

Oh dear. This month might be difficult. Perhaps get a small loan to cover you through June's pride posts.

Have loved Phranc since the 80s. Glad to know that the Tupperware documentary has become available!
More Phranc links (first two were on the previously but worth highlighting, I think)
*Bandcamp includes recent song “Old in LA” as well as all the old records.
* Official website Phranc.LA includes blog, Etsy and social media links.
* Vintage video interview of Phranc by Tosh Berman (son of Wallace, read his memoir) on Tea with Tosh. I don’t think the song she sings about Natalie Wood and William Holden is on any of her records, but their autopsies were conducted by Thomas Noguchi, who was the subject of a song on Phranc’s first album, Folksinger.
* Images of Phranc’s visual art - largely paper sculpture of objects - at Craig Krull Gallery
* 2022 City of Santa Monica Pride Proclamation with Phranc on banjo

It's vaguely related, but Phranc mentions training other Tupperware salespeople, and all the Tupperware I own I purchased from Dixie Longate, one of those Phranc trained.
