Goblin Bet, akin to Salty Bet (previously), lets you wager pretend gold pieces on the outcome of monster fights. Fighters use their 5th edition D&D attributes. Stats are displayed on the sides of the screen, and you can click on the little question mark by a fighter's stat block to go to a page with information about them. Look out for random special abilities some fighters have, listed at the bottom of their stat block.

Link isn't working for me, but I'll check back later. Love me some saltybet (makes an excellent party drinking game)

Some of the tactical choices are... sub-optimal.

This is pretty neat! Especially since it all seems to run in-browser, no streaming video from a separate machine or anything.

I will say that I miss the theatrics of Salty Bet, though. Even a little "LET'S ROCK, BAYBEE" before every match starts would really spice things up.

It's interesting that I seem to have no feel at all for which monster might beat which. I was sure the Earth Elemental would stomp the Mage.

The Earth Elemental should have won, but it rolled really badly. The mage only had 18 HP, but the elemental rolled a 1, a 5 and then a 9. It did get one good hit in, but not enough of a good hit.

Somebody catch me up from the 1980s, please... higher AC is... better? now? Is that correct?
posted by Flunkie at 1:05 PM on July 10, 2023

yep, higher AC is better now. higher hit points still better, too. :)

seems like two really, really important things to consider are number of attacks and how well one's resistances line up with the other's attacks. but it also seems to often come down to which one gets initiative and first attack. sigh.

And, if a monster gets put to sleep or banished or petrified or (I presume) paralyzed, they just immediately lose.

Yeah, always bet on Dragon Ball the action economy

Why did the dragon use a fire attack on a fire giant who is immune to fire damage? Maybe they got paid off to take a dive?

Paralyzed is what Hold Person does, and the target would continue to get saves at the end of each turn. But Paralyzed also means advantage on attacks, auto-crit on hits, so...

Wow, giant crab, under these rules, is way OP. It grapples its opponent, it has no way to get out of it, so from then on it has advantage and the enemy has disadvantage, period. It's taken out a _lion _.

Crab are just evolutionarily better, haven't we learned that yet?

OP Grappled looks like an oversight. Creatures will take an action to escape from Web.

I am so awful at this that I'm thinking maybe I should change my strategy to something like "go all in on the more charismatic monster".

What happens if both die? I've never seen it happen, but it seems like it can: For example, Electric Body (which damages your opponent after they deal damage to you) works even after you're dead.

Flunkie, I've seen it happen. The fight was declared a draw. I I think I won my bet though, which was odd? I'm also not sure what it meant for the overall tournament structure.

Will there be weight classes eventually? Like, so that the Tarrasque can be the medieval Rare Akuma.

The trick is to attack its weak point for maximum damage.

Dragons are overwhelming except when I bet on them.

Yeah, it's really a lesson on how dragons, relatively speaking, are not what they're cracked up to be.

If you want a Salty Bet alternative that still uses MUGEN, look no further than SpriteClub.

Currently a vampire spawn is fighting "too much flatulence" and both have some sort of life regeneration thing. So it's a stalemate. I wonder how long the fight will go on for

I heard in the game's chat that there's a 20 turn limit. I think it's considered a draw after that.

Some monsters have been "adopted" by site patrons. "too much flatulence" is likely one of those. The monster's actual species is a little below the name in those cases. I saw a fight involving a Will-o-wisp called "looooooong life bar," that had the random add-on Overflowing Health, which both caused it to regenerate around 1d8 HP every turn, but this HP could go above its usual maximum. It had a high AC and resisted all weapon damage. It didn't t have great attack though, so that fight went on and on, until it finally managed to shock its opponent down to 0 HP.
