Video Club

Wes Anderson looks around one of the last remaining video stores in Paris and enthuses about some of his favourite movies; Christopher Nolan and Cillian Murphy do the same. These are the latest in a series of Video Club clips at YouTube featuring directors, actors & others waxing lyrical about cinema.

Other instalments in the series feature David Cronenberg (previously); Michael B. Jordan; Terry Gilliam; Baz Luhrmann; and Bong Joon-ho (English subtitles available).

Frustratingly, most of the guests in the series are men, and of the clips where women are featured, the ones I've seen are in French with no English subtitles available (e.g. Agnès Jaoui).

On the plus side, these are 4-5 times longer than the too-brief Criterion Closet videos. I remember really liking the Cronenberg.

Well, I have a list of at least 12 movies to watch. Amazing! Love it.

Come to Portland and watch me wander around the Psychotrics section at Movie Madness talking about all the movies I probably shouldn't have seen in my preteens that nonetheless cemented my lifelong love of weird indie cinema and horror.

I love this series so much! It is really fun to watch these directors geek out and also to hear them talk about something other than themselves in an interview promoting a movie. I didn't really think I would like Christopher Nolan but he really impressed me with his level of movie knowledge (apparently he ran a movie club at Uni).

There's a surprisingly great one with Brad Pitt and David Leitch.

Greta Gerwig did an interview with Letterboxd where she talks about 29 films that influenced her work on Barbie, which is what made me actually agree to go see it.

The French subtitles are meticulously curated and timed as well - great production values on this. I've subscribed.

If you're in the Los Angeles area, check out the recently-reopened Vidiots (now a non-profit foundation) for video rentals and film screenings. Local news video.
