Damo Suzuki has passed into the infinite. Best known for his time as the singer of Can, he also created a wealth of other music and art, as well as inspiring many other artists . See some vintage footage of him in action here.

Somehow only listened to Can in the 00s and I’d you had told me it was made then and not the 70s I totally would have believed you.

this is a blast from a few years back, which is well worth sticking with for a few minutes. And ummm, I think it has to be said. It rather runs contrary to the title of this post, gives way more than despair ...

Amazing and Visionary person, one of a kind. I had the honor to play in a pop-up band with him in Brooklyn when he was touring about 15 years ago. RIP

in that Nardwuar interview I linked to above, there's mention (I don't know how true it is) that in one year, he played with over a thousand different musicians. Constant touring to different towns, a different pop-up band in every town. It's possible

I saw him about the same time as Liquidwolf, in a rinky-dink community centre in Ladbroke Grove. I might still have the CD he signed for me, sold by his backing band for the night: some random prog rockers who were clearly thrilled to be on stage with a legend. There were no more than two, three dozen people in the room that night and Suzuki kept all eyes on him throughout the entire mesmerising experience.

The real deal, and by all accounts a sweet guy and generous collaborator whose enthusiasm for the music did not dim with age. RIP and thank you, Damo Suzuki.
