Come on down!!! You're the next contestant on the Price is Right! A fixture of television since 1972, who can forget the Pricing Games or the lovely Barker Beauties? [warning: swimsuit porn, pop-ups, gator, what would your mother think?] My favorite pricing game was Plinko. Learn how to build your own Plinko for your home and fine tune your mathematical strategy and hopefully get on the Record Book. Even if Bob Barker thinks the show's going to end soon, you can participate in Fantasy Internet adaptions if it does. I bid one dollar!

When I was a small child (as in elementary school), I would watch this show religiously. Why? Numbers! Lots and lots of numbers flying around! Who needed Schoolhouse Rock when you could see math (such as it was - I don't remember the games being all that math-heavy, just extremely number-laden) being applied right there on TV? People winning things was a nice side-effect, but mainly it was the numbers that attracted me to the show. Thanks for the links (and memories), Stan.

I finally found information on the Original Price is Right hosted by Bill Cullen.
Much sport was made in the popular press about the unusual prizes offered to The Price Is Right contestants, and what the contestants eventually did with them. A Texas farmer once got an elephant as a bonus prize when he was the winning bidder on a grand piano. Producer Bob Stewart intended it as a joke (the elephant was to supply extra ivory) and planned on giving the contestant a hefty $4,000 cash equivalent instead. Turned out the guy wanted the pachyderm anyway, and Stewart was forced to fly one in from Kenya
Man, if I ever needed a factoid for parties. Must also be the inspiration for the Simpsons episode where Bart wins an elephant.

The "previous bid plus one" stunt always bugged me. Would have been more interesting to have sealed written bids, a la the answers on Final Jeopardy.

One of my life long dreams was accomplished 2 years ago when I appeared on the Price is Right. Some observations.
-Everyone KNOWS that they will be called down.
-Bob Barker is one of the wittiest guys I've ever seen/heard.
-The 6am to 1pm that you have to wait in line to get on the show is one of the most painful experiences to ever have to go through.
-Everyone gets really mad when they finally realize that the are not getting called down.
-My name is spelled Louis, it is not pronounced Luis. The way they pick you to "come on down" is by going through the line, they say your name and you introduce yourself. When the producer came to me he pronounced my name Luis. I was so flustered by this that all I could say was "One Dollar". In hindsight it was probably funny, but I deserved the chance to give my 30 second speech of how much the Price is Right has meant to me over the years.
-I will be telling these stories the rest of my life.

You know what bugs me about TPIR lately? They've discarded older games and created newer, shorter games that take less time so that they could show more commercials during the program. The new games aren't nearly as fun to play along with as the classics like Plinko, et al, IMO.
I still like that show. It's one of the last game shows that is purposely rich in kitch and glitz. All the latest game shows have been Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? wannabes.
