Worst. Gimmick band. Ever.

The worst gimmick band of all time. Man, I vaguely remember these guys, though now I'm wishing I didn't. As if the Village People weren't bad enough, we give you... THE ALL-SPORTS BAND!!!

Anyone remember Raven? They dubbed themselves "Athletic rock" and wore sports facemasks whilst playing semi-hard metal.

Slade. Where "come" is always spelled "cum".

I not only remember them, I own their albums including the double-live one. Only the drummer wore the mask. Their early stuff was actually pretty good metal in the Diamond Head/Metallica vein except their vocalist wasn't that great.

For gimmick bands...anybody remember Angel? The white clad label mates of Kiss?

Also it's not excatly a gimmick band but it's definitely an odd by-product of a gimmicky trend--Red Simpson took the truck driver song to it's surrealistic extreme with the immortal "I'm A Truck".

Stryper. Now that band had some really good lookin' chics in it. That lead singer was HOT.

Speaking of GWAR, they're sort of acquaintances from Virginia (and believe me I'm not name-dropping to impress anyone, it is GWAR we're talking about, not the Dalai Lama), and what's so funny and uncharacteristic is that they're internet freaks these days, and specifically LiveJournal freaks. Several of them keep an LJ page, and awhile back there was some ridiculous spat between GWAR members and some dotty LJ chicks and to make a long, boring story short, it's hard to believe someone who used to sodomize a plaster-of-paris Michael Jackson with a crucifix onstage is meantime engaging in petty online dramatiques with teenage diarists. Funny, and uncharacteristic for a gore-band. And in retrospect, not a great story.

You know, in some better universe somewhere, GWAR and Stryper are actually the same band, and tour across the country one way as GWAR, and back the other as Stryper, a la the Hanson Brothers and Nomeansno.
