They should start an intefadah to get their land back, since the Libyans are occupying it. (They were all chased out and had their land confiscated, it's different than the situation is allegedly in Palestine because... ummm... )

Outlawyr :- It's an interesting piece of social history. At least I found it interesting, and that's all I really have to go on when posting! In one of my earliest posts here I was criticised for including too much information, and consequently I try to avoid cluttering the front page unnecessarily. It seems that you can't please all of the people all of the time! Anyway, I thought the text was self-explanatory; evidently it wasn't (probably a dangerous assumption, given the wide variety of backgrounds of people here), but I hope you enjoyed the link anyway.
Realising that I can't please all of the people all of the time has made me a lot more relaxed and impervious about what I post. ;)

Swerdloff, what do you think they should do to get their land and private property back that was confiscated? Presumably they should take their case to the court systems in Libya, in the international community, to the UN. Suppose they win every court case but Libya refuses to give back their land and private property which was stolen, even though it is the moral, ethical, and legal thing to do? And suppose in addition to that Libya put all remaining Jews under house arrest, and continued to steal from them gradually, killing men women and children in order to enforce their dominion over them? Suppose this goes on for an additional 35 years? Then what?

This is a great post, and an interesting counterpoint-story to the more famous story of the Ethiopian Jews.

Not quite, cell divide. Suppose they meet the creation of Qaddafi's Libya with war and begin to wage a campaign of terror before they ever turn to courts or the UN. Suppose they continue to "gradually" kill men, women and children in order to further their goal of the destruction of Libya. Suppose their corrupt leadership rejects numerous reasonable settlement offers in favour of continued war. Then, let's suppose their murderous fundamentalist elements discover good PR and suddenly the world no longer sees them as terrorists.
"Win every court case"? "Enforce dominion"? Who do you think you're fooling? Your skewed, appallingly one-sided rhetoric betrays you.

Cell Divide - I think they should start an intefadah. It's no different than what happened to the residents of British Palestine when the Jews got a country from the UN in 48.
Plus, declaring an intefadah would gain them the international legitimacy that the Palestinians have. Win win!

All they have to do is engage in a bunch of terrorism and claim that all they want is peace and to have their farms, vicously ripped from them by the Ghaddafi government, and constantly blow stuff up. Then they'll be all set. And keep promising a crackdown on militants.
They could try that all over continental Europe, too. ;) (Think - how many Jews houses were confiscated by the authorities in World War II to never be given back to the families?)

Uh, what?
Can you cite some court cases? Thanks. Because I can't. Reparations for historical "takings" is very hard. Note the movement to compensate american natives, african american slaves, and others. But the secret negotiations that took place last week ("The Geneva Agreement") proposes either reparations, or resettlement into Palestine.

Amazing how quickly an interesting post about a culture can devolve into a slam-fest about terrorism and occupation of territory. Some of us who are Jews get a bit tired of being viewed as bearers of Israeli policy every time our culture or history comes up.

Plep, you were actually persuading me till you made the snarky link to baby gravy, which in the context of the thread was appropriate, and wasn't an FPP in any event. Like I said, I think a little more info than just the site title is useful. If Metafilter's front page were just a list of links I wouldn't bother visiting.

zaelic :- Yeah... There's no political agenda behind this post, although the difference in how Arabs living in Israel/the Occupied Territories are covered as opposed to Jews in Arab states may make an interesting discussion point.
Outlawyr :- Yeah. That was a bit low of me, I admit it. For me, my biggest problem with Metafilter is the amount of criticism that posters receive over issues which are really matters of personal preference (too many words, too few, unusual posting styles, whatever). On the other hand, the diversity in individual posting styles (including crunchland, y2karl, Miguel and others), for me, is one of the front page's great strengths. I hope that there are people who recognise that.
