Then what's that syrup of poppies that's being taken by noble and royal folk in Sterling's Baroque Cycle? Opium?

You mean Stephenson's Baroque Cycle?

BTGoG Probably Laudinum, which opium disolved in alchohol. The article actualy gives a more precicise recipie:

There were many recipes for laudanum, the most famous being that of Thomas Sydenham (1624-89). Sydenham's recipe, given in his work on dysentery in 1669, contained 1 pound sherry wine, 2 ounces opium, 1 ounce saffron, 1 ounce powder of cinnamon, and 1 ounce powder of cloves.

BTGoG, morphine is refined opium.

Intresting note papaver somniferum seeds are legal in the US, you can grow your own opium. However, since the plants contain morphine they aren't legal.

BTGoG, morphine is refined opium.

Opium is the sap of a spesific kind of Poppy plant (papaver somniferum), which contains several chemicals including Morphine and Codine.

Many poppies other than papaver somniferum contain the relevant alkaloids ... even the California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica) which is a member of the Papaveraceae family, has some.

ObMefi: the tagline on the MetaFilter logo at the top of my screen is "more addictive than crack". The gods have a sense of humour today.

I thought this post was going to be about the band. I would have had more to contribute because I have actual experience using Morphine as opposed to morphine-- to get my freak on!!!

I am so thankful for morphine! When I had my kidney stones taken out...oh was I a slave to the drip. They put my morphine drip on some sort of machine where I could press a button and get the drip of morphine. However, it was on a timer so I could only get it every hour or something like that. If I pressed the button before the timer was up, it would buzz. No morphine. buzz buzz buzz buzz buzz...no buzz. Ahhhhhhhhhh. Like a wave of relief washing over me. Until it made me throw up after 2 days. Not fun. :(

Gotta have M to get that tingle, tingle...

*goes off to check if I quoted that right*

Where is my copy of The Man With the Golden Arm, anyway? Hmmm?

Heh...I nearly did FPP about this. I'll chuck this in then - they just got approval the other day to try using a modified reversing agent to help with the side affects from morphia.

Sam Stone came home,
To his wife and family
After serving in the conflict overseas.
And the time that he served,
Had shattered all his nerves,
And left a little shrapnel in his knee.
But the morphine eased the pain,
And the grass grew round his brain,
And gave him all the confidence he lacked,
With a Purple Heart and a monkey on his back.

There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes,
Jesus Christ died for nothin' I suppose.
Little pitchers have big ears,
Don't stop to count the years,
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios.
Mmm....

See also:

Shaking Hands, Michele Shocked:

A rebel stand is no place for a traitor
A loveless Union cannot bend us to her will
Cannot command the soldiers who now hate her
Nor demand the fealty of her generals

I took a rifle ball in my shoulder
But my entire body filled with pain
I pleaded with them all at the field hospital
"Oh, God, another shot of morphine!"

Soldier's Joy, oh what's the point in pleasure?
When it's only meant to kill the pain
Lay down my arms and take the coffin's measure
Or take up arms and send me out to fight again

And My Morphine, Gillian Welch (whose yodels do not transcribe well):

I've looked around
Been all up and down
I never wasted time
On two or three
There's only one girl for me
There was a time
She used to treat me fine
But lately she's been acting
Awful stone
Makes her man
Weep and moan
{Yodel}
My Morphine will be
The death of me

Well, if no one else will... this goes out to Mayor Curley:

Where is the ritual
And tell me where where is the taste
Where is the sacrifice
And tell me where where is the faith
Someday there'll be a cure for pain
That's the day I throw my drugs away
When they find a cure for pain
Where is the cave
Where the wise woman went
And tell me where
Where's all that money that I spent
I propose a toast to my self control
You see it crawling helpless on the floor
Someday there'll be a cure for pain
That's the day I throw my drugs away
When they find a cure for pain (x2)
When they find a cure find a cure for pain

Hm, I had no idea that Spiritualized's J. Spaceman had nicked this part of the lyrics to Cop Shoot Cop from John Prine. It's hardly J's only opiatic song though. Medication's one of my favorites:

Every day I wake up
And I take my medication
And I spend the rest of the day
Waiting for it to wear off
Every night I stay up late
And make my state more desperate
Spend the rest of the night
Waiting for it to wear off

I'm waiting for the time
When I can be without
These things that make me feel
This way all of the time

Every time I say this
I just know this time I mean it
But a feeling deep inside
Says "it's okay one more time"

Makes me feel so good
Makes me feel so fine
Makes me feel so good
Leaves me fucked up inside

Sometimes I don't even know where this dusty road is taking me
Sometimes I don't even know the reason why
But I figure I'll keep on ramblin'
Lots of booze and lots of gamblin'
It's easier than just waitin around to die.

Once I had a Ma, I even had a Pa
He hit her with a belt once 'cause she cried
She told him to take care of me
Headed back to Tennessee
It was easier 'n just waitin around to die.

I came of age and I met a girl in a Tuscaloosa bar
She cleaned me out and hid it on the sly
I tried to kill the pain
I bought some wine and hopped a train
It was easier than just waiting around to die

My friend said he knew where some easy money was
We robbed a man and brother did we fly
The police caught up with me
drug me back to muskogee
Now it's two long years of waitng around to die.

Now I'm out of prison I got me a friend at last
He don't drink, or cheat, or steal, or lie
His name's codeine
he's the finest thing I've seen
and together we're gonna wait around to die.
