Everyone's angry, it seems

"AngryJournalist.com, an increasingly popular site that consists of nothing but rants from pissed-off reporters, is now the most accurate summation extant of journalism as an industry," (via Gawker). It's spawned a marvelously less popular HappyJournalist.com, and what appears to be an unrelated copycat called AngryResident.com, for "for every doctor-in-training tired of suffering in silence."

Odd format. Have I missed something, or is it just one very long thread of undirected scattershot whinging? And they wonder why journalism isn't all it was - construct us a compelling narrative, you lazy bastards!

Oy vey. Every day it seems something pops up that says "Hey, Andrew! You know how you haven't been doubting your major in college for the past two years? Yeah well lets fix that."

I was amused by a poster that was pissed that he was hired to teach a journalism course and had to prepare the material himself because there was no text book.

OMG the horror! A teacher has to teach instead of just paraphrasing a book. Quick someone give him a million dollars to ease his pain.

What a clueless pansy.

I've never met an honest journalist. I've dated 3 and have vowed never again.

Is there any MeFite who isn't themselves a journalist who's ever met an honest one? I'm truly curious.

...Shit. I wonder if this really is what modern journalism is like, or if most of these people are just whining. I'm a sophomore journalism major, so I kinda hope it's the latter.

There must be some other way to insult him than to suggest he is a homosexual.

"There must be some other way to insult him than to suggest he is a homosexual."

From Merriem-Webster (second entry):
a : usually disparaging : a weak or effeminate man or boy
b: usually disparaging : a male homosexual

I use the A entry (more specifically with the weak connotation rather than the effeminate). You may of course prefer the B entry. But, don't presume to call me homophobic. Thanks.

I'm going to shamelessly rip off William Gibson and Pattern Recognition here because the quote always reminded me of journalism: a species of depression engendered by too long and too closely observing the human soul from certain predictable but basically unnatural angles.

And to rip him off twice: It's sort of traditional to let them drink themselves to death.

Oddman, I'm glad you've got a dictionary on hand, but you're word choice was exceedingly thoughtless. There's an alternate meaning for the word "faggot" too, but that doesn't mean its the sort of word that can just be thrown around. I don't presume you're homophobic, but I'd say it was a pretty weak choice of words.
posted by Astro Zombie at 7:46 PM on March 9, 2008

AZ, well in the case of "faggot" the term is now, as far as I know, predominantly associated with homosexuality. The word "pansy" is not, so far as I know. That's a big difference. (Frankly, I'm not a linguist and I have no data to back-up those claims. If you do, feel free to cite it.)

In any case, I think you are making a mountain out of a mole hill. I'll gladly stop defending myself if you agree to stop reading my comments as offensive when there are fairly obvious inoffensive readings available.

I'm sorry, but you're just wrong about this. Perhaps in whatever part of the world you're from, pansy simply means an effete boy, but everywhere I have ever lived it is derogatory slang for a homosexual. It's also a weak and inexact expression, certainly not the best you can have chosen, and I am surprised you are defending it's choice.

You might think it's a mountain out of a molehill, but I just don't have any patience for people who throw around mean-spirited language, profess total innocence of any secondary meaning, and then defend their right to that word choice. A large number of readers are going to read "pany" as "faggot." Is that what you meant? Is pansy so excellent a word that you couldn't have chosen another? Does it so specifically mean what you need it to mean that no other word will do? No? Then stop defending it.

Well, I was just going to add that for journalists, they are some boring writers. The medical residents, on the other hand, were much more interesting to read.

As far as angry ranting about the idiocies of humankind goes, the Customers Suck LJ community is far more interesting. The "Why are you angry" prompt kills half the complaints, and the other half is just petty.

The AngryResident.com is satisfying. I love reading what the real feelings are of people in the medical business. Has the AngryPatient one already been created?

A lot of this is just your usual "my co-worker is an asshole, my boss is an asshole" whining. But journalism is in a bad way, and generally it is not the fault of the folks who are whining here, or even their asshole bosses, but of the bosses of their asshole bosses.

There's more on the state of journalism today at the CJR.

But then...Hey look it's an Etch-A-Sketch clock!
