Huh. I'm always confused when I see things like this that are based on current events that haven't yet fully run their course. Like the books about the OJ trial published before the final verdict. Wouldn't you want to wait at least until his presidency is over? For example, doesn't a McCain win or Obama win put a significantly different spin on Bush's story? I can't imagine this movie not seeming horribly outdated a year from now.

In sum, what ColdChef said.

Wait a minute: from the Wikipedia link.

The director has described the tone of the film to be in the vein of Network or Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb,

I know how the movie get around the last 6 months. It'll just recreate the ending of Dr. Strangelove - and probably end up all the more accurate for it, too.

Ha. Ha. oh god.

Oliver Stone was pretty good once, but he's been tone-deaf for at least a decade. Who is actually going to see this film? Those who like Bush won't, because they'll be certain in advance that it's obviously a hatchet job and a slanderous pack of lies. Those who don't like Bush won't because none of it is news to them, they get can't stand the sight of him in real life and even turn off NPR when a soundbite from him comes on. Who does that leave, exactly?

It looks funny in a way that makes me think it's supposed to be "comedic" more than controversial or thought-provoking, which is different for Stone (relative the movies of his I've seen) and seems like an interesting approach.

I like the line which went something like, "You're a Bush so start acting like a Bush!" and the funny way that in real life, George W. Bush took his advice, but got it just a little bit wrong and actually did start acting like a bush.

James Cromwell, reprising the grinning psychotic affect he brought to LA Confidential, as George Sr. The stunning Thandi Newton, trapped under that terrible Condi hair helmet. Living goddess Ellen Burstyn as Pazuzu. All as directed by Oliver Stone, the man who approved the Tribbles used as wigs used in The Doors and more to the point made JFK, the most batshit mainstream movie I've ever seen about anything, much less American politics.

I seriously haven't been this excited about anything in ages. I'd crawl over glass to see it. In fact, when it comes out I might just do that, in order to get into the proper mood.

posted by shmegegge at 12:48 PM on July 28, 2008 [2 favorites]

There is something brilliant that they could do here. They could completely rewrite history and show a man at the helm of a genius presidency:

[In the wake of 9/11/01] This event demands an even and carefully measured response. We will go after those responsible, but unlike those who have attacked us, we will act with great caution to ensure that not a single innocent person is harmed by our swift and accurate retaliation.

[Prior to Katrina] There is a chance that this storm could aversely affect the region, let's get FEMA down there to make sure we have an immediate response in place.

[Post Katrina] An American city has been damaged, but we, as a nation, are going to not rest until it is completely rebuilt and all her people are safely back in their homes.

[On torture] It has come to my attention that some people in the military have acted in a wholly deplorable manner and tortured prisoners that were in their care. This is completely unacceptable and these soldiers have been disciplined. Let me be abundantly clear we, as a nation, will not now, nor will we ever condone any form of torture.

Basically, by the end of the movie, American citizens are living the dream; the economy is at an all time high, Afghanistan is a paradise, and it's citizens love us for rebuilding their country, the rest of the world sees us as saint-like restorers, and Bush himself is loved by all.

Then when people leave the theater, they look around them at the actual world and go, "Oh right... it was a fictional account. Fuck."
