Chokeville.

With a one-word title and no context, you're just going to have lots of people disappointed this isn't an app that strangles people who send you Farmville updates on Facebook.

Except now I've discovered how awesome Joshua Allen is and I regret my snark.

Subtitled: Sundry tales of awesome adventure, by Joshua Allen

If that's not enough, check the primer, in which the reader learns
Chokeville is an exhaustive and exhausting survey of a city called Fort Hook. It was an actual fort back in the day, thanks to its advantageous location between the sea and a dense forest and some foothills called The Palaces. The original fort was paved over (although there is a vibrant and frightening community in the underground ruins, now euphemistically called Old Town) and a semi-thriving metropolis grew on top of it.
And then there's a hint about the "first mayor having some kind of mystical connection with sea life" ....

I wouldn't even know where to begin with a summary of this. I'd been waiting for him to launch for forever and was saddened both that I missed the launch a few days ago and that there weren't already 25 posts about it on the blue. Here's Josh's own summary, from the Tumblr linked above:
This morning I started a new site called Chokeville. Someone just asked me to summarize it succinctly (like, let’s keep this short, weisenheimer, can’t be jawing about blogs all day when there’s tail to nail) and I said well, man, I guess it’s ten thousand little stories about a made-up city and — but he was already gone.

The first six stories are up now. I have an idea for a bunch more but that’ll get us to maybe thirty. Not sure about the other 9,970. Surely I’ll have a team handling the work for me by then, like whoever does Garfield.

Anyway this first batch provides an introduction to some of the characters we’ll be dealing with. I didn’t do this on purpose but I think every story features at least one person getting punched or stabbed.

Moving forward, I’ll be fleshing out the site (which I built yesterday out of 1997 HTML!) with maps, photos, illustrations, movies, podcasts, and whatevers, but this is the jumping off point. I hope you’ll jump off with me.
Chokeville was a novel forever (at least in Internet Time) ago, this, apparently is different.

Give it a try, I bet you'll like it, or you can have all of the money you paid for it back.

Oh, and there's a trailer for the tl;dr crowd, but if you're in that crowd I'll save you some time... this isn't for you.

So this isn't about the Buffalo Bills, then?

Buffalo Bills? I thought it was going to be about the Red Sox.

or maybe >insert favorite underdog team here<?

I really like it, but it needs RSS or it's own twitter for updates or something. Expecting me to check back every day for updates is silly.

juv3nal, I dunno about your browser but mine has the little orange RSS thingy pointed here, when I added it to Google Reader earlier today it did the right thing...

Huh. Guess I'm just used to there being an actual link on the page. Consider me schooled.

This makes me happy.

I love me some Josh Allen. But Chokeville makes me sad, because he's a much better short-form comedian than a writer of fiction of any type.

Oh my!

Ummm, do you mean, besides the one that says, "The RSS Feed"?

He added that since my comment. Which, if you were following the feed, you'd know since the update is time stamped like that.

This publishing concept is as cool as the stories. Kudos, Joshua.

Josh Allen's writing is hit-and-miss for me, but the hits hit so hard it would be a crime not to forgive his misses. Chokeville doesn't seem like my bag, but as far as I'm concerned, the man who wrote this gets a free pass for the rest of his natural life.
