Cheap, good, far away.
Heh. Author lives in Mexico but leaves it as runner-up. Not that I wouldn’t do the same. Have how I mentioned how terrible it is here and how all you gentrifying blanquitos should move to Asia?

You're unlikely to get caught, but working on your tourist visa is unlikely to be legal.

Best case for a digital nomad is that you’re not working for a company in the country you’re in. For a long time I didn’t have the right to work in Mexico for a Mexican corporation but there was no restriction at all on me consulting for U.S. firms.

You’re very right about him glossing over safety issues though. There are islands of safety most places but you need to do your research carefully.

(to clarify, that means remote consulting for a company in the U.S.)

Maasai herders in East Africa use wrong numbers to make connections
This sounds so like the Maasai I’ve met.

When colliding with a much bigger group with better technology some cultures cease to exist. The Maasai just acquire and adapt.

There’s a fine line between human interest and exoticizing/patronizing in stories like these.

I don’t get the sense from the article that they’re saying that what’s happening is in any way unique to the Maasai. They’re just studying the tribe and have found this phenomenon a “Dog Bites Man” level news event for them.

In contrast when it happens in U.S. culture it is a “Man bites Dog” event that gets press for years.

Falsehoods Programmers Believe About Plain Text
Ligatures are never used as distinct letters in an alphabet.
Digraphs are never used as distinct letters in an alphabet.
Trigraphs are never used as distinct letters in an alphabet.

I can guarantee you that none of these are assumptions that most programmers make about alphabets, as most programmers have no idea what the hell these are.

Same goes for a lot of the rest of the list. Fun though.

>”Plain text" is a meaningless phrase if you're not defining it.

The thing is, all of us define it based on the limitations we decided to live with, and this list is a good introduction to the existence of people who define it differently based on different limitations

Philosophically that is nice but up through the late 1980’s “plain text” had the very specific meaning of “ASCII” for programmers, and I could have… [more]

They are coming. And there's nothing you can do to stop them.
I liked the first book but lost interest in the second two as the science moved from plausible to based-on-someone’s-pet-theory mode. Also as new technologies were introduced they had enormous potential that was constantly underused and that was getting a bit tiring too.

I really don't see how Liu's work is any more / less magical than any other 'hard' sci fi work.

It's a great deal more magical than most of what I consider 'hard' sci fi.

2001 is a great example of hard and magic sci-fi pressed together. All of the human science is (in retrospect) directly foreseeable from mainstream human science at the time; the monolith technology is based in theories on the edge of human science which,… [more]

All The Jimmy Carr Standup Specials
Like others, put me down for panel shows and skip the stand-up. I suspect a large portion of that is that the panel shows have editors — if nothing else he knows he’s got to stay in bounds to stay off the cutting room floor.

If you watch carefully you’ll see that anything nasty that Carr says about Rachel Riley or Susie Dent (or anyone else really) is scripted. The tone of his improvised jokes is much much lighter.

I don't care how "technically good" you are, that's unacceptable.

I find it hilarious precisely because it *is* so gut punchingly wrong, but it’s irresponsible to tell such jokes to a general audience. Not everyone shares that sense of humor and some folks are going to be hurt.

I'm having a hard time thinking who would be the RIGHT audience for a joke about genocide, honestly.

A group of comedians most likely. People who appreciate the crafting of the joke with the subject a very far second.

>racism, misogyny, homophobia, classism, fat jokes, and some general meanness towards an audience member.

So then why are we posting this on MetaFilter?

There are no Saints. With everyone you have to decide how much bad stuff you’re going to wade through to get to the good stuff. Tolerances differ.

The whole point of putting those warnings on was to let people know that if they have low tolerances for those topics, these videos are not for them. The system works.

Rosie Jones has cerebral palsy, and in her case it manifests with some aphasia; she speaks very slowly and with difficulty.

It can take me significant effort to understand Rosie Jones sometimes but it’s usually worth it because she is so often delightfully offensive.

Maine's Secretary of State has barred Trump from the primary ballot
I think there will be a decision quickly and I don't think it will have anything to do with Trump. The states are claiming their right to interpret the Federal Constitution and I'm 99% sure the Supreme Court will have none of that.

I cannot imagine a combination of venue, judge(s), and/or jury that could convict Donald Trump of insurrection in a way that would be admitted to be valid to a single Trump voter or Republican politician.

Other than, presumably, "Former Republican U.S. representative from Rhode Island Claudine (Cmarada) Schneider, who now lives in Colorado; former Colorado House and Senate Majority Leader Norma Anderson, an unaffiliated voter who recently left… [more]

There wasn't a Civil War equivalent of the Nuremburg Trials.

No, but there were a lot of people who signed papers and took oaths. While it cast a wide net, the 14th amendment was about denying the leaders of the South the ability to continue their political lives. I suspect the reason insurrection is defined so poorly is that there was plenty of clear evidence for everyone that was truly cared about.

I’m placing a bet for “states can restrict people from the ballot but must have a defined clear process of how and methods to challenge” now.

Do you think so? States restricting people from the ballot has been around a long time in terms of age and place of birth. It seems a little late for that sort of thing.

My bet is that they will find that the Federal judicial system will have to have a clear finding of insurrection… [more]

Therapists: We've heard everything
yeah even if i got a therapist which is very unlikely there's entire motion picture studio soundstages of thoughts that i'd never ever talk about aloud because they are just too wrong to ever be said to anyone much less to someone who can push a button to call cops

See, I would feel like even asking "what would you do if I talked about self-harm" would put in the mind of the therapist that self-harm was something I was thinking about and pretty much poison the well from the get-go.

I suppose. A good therapist might just ask “are you thinking of self-harm?” And when you said “No” just move on to what you actually were feeling. If they’re sitting there judging or having a secret agenda of their own… [more]

I’ve had a lot of moments of insight over the years, which is why I’ve continued with therapists far beyond the first few years when I really needed one. What can I say? I find myself a compelling mystery.

I did surprise my therapist once at the very beginning of our relationship when I claimed to be a 27 year-old male American who had never been drunk or stoned. He didn’t come straight out and accuse me of lying but it was pretty close.

But it’s definitely been a change to go from seeing the illnesses as psychosomatic to seeing the therapy related successful treatments as psychosomatic.

I don’t know that they’re orthogonal. A chunk of my therapy has been coming to grips with the physiological problems I’m stuck with and undoing all the psychological damage I did to myself before realizing that, yup, my body just wasn’t built to spec.

All of the presidents in that shitshow of a hearing should have resigned immediately, not for any given answer but for the fact that they were clearly woefully unprepared for it. They did a very poor job of representing their schools which is a central part of their jobs.

What those answers should have been depends greatly upon whether you believe universities are places that keep kids safe or places to prepare young adults for what they’re going to face in the real world.

I might be annoyed if I bought them to make a diorama or something. I had some sympathy up until this:

But $4.49? Really? I’m struggling to see how this makes economic sense for the plaintiff.

It's a class action lawsuit. The filers tend to see a much larger chunk than their original loss, and in this case I suspect there would be a kickback from the lawyers as well.

Even if so, it is hard to see how holding companies accountable for their misrepresentations could make attempts at suing over frivolous personal injury claims more common or likely to succeed.

It sets the tone and perpetuates the idea of suing as lottery money.

Holding the companies accountable for the misrepresentations is a matter for the FTC. If they're not enforcing the law, sue them.

Private equity. Hospitals.
I kept waiting for some breakout more detailed than "private equity", which covers a lot of ground. I mean, was one owner responsible for 50% of the new problems while another owner oversaw greatly improved services? Just giving an average seems like a dodge to me.

Not that it would surprise me if private equity owned hospitals were suffering, but I'd like to see a break down listing the 51 hospitals, owners, and the raised or lowered quality.

Like a high-seas version of the Fyre Festival
I don’t think it was a scam. Miray basically sacrificed a successful business to try to make it happen.

It was, however, a hugely over optimistic gamble they took with other people’s money. Given the lessons learned it would not surprise me if someone (perhaps a much larger cruise line who already owns an appropriate ship) will pull it off with Holmes or Peterson still handling the marketing.

Every time OREO is clued in a puzzle, the Cookie Monster eats a Polish Angel Wing.

Something I've noticed about NYT puzzles is some answers will appear in multiple puzzles within a week or two, then not be seen for a long time or even never again, like an in-joke going around the constructor community.

I wonder if there's any feedback system in place with online puzzles. How many people managed to solve the whole puzzle, what clues people got hung up on, etc.
