Full stop the "full stop"?
This intrusion of British English into a primarily American English website must come to a full stop.

What to do when threads result in name calling?
As far as turning off favorites, then I won't see them but everyone else will. I'm not sure why people think putting masking tape at the bottom of the tv is going to make the Blackhawks game not have a score.

Speaking as one of the very very few users who has favorites turned off completely, I find it helps me keep out of the scoring frame of mind. People may be using favorites for either bookmarking or approval but in the end it doesn't matter:… [more]

I don't know that it's "very few" or that we can know the number at any moment - can we?

Not instantaneously, but pb ran the numbers a while back. Unless there have been serious changes in the way people use the site since then we would appear to be a fairly rare phenomenon.

Right. I'm also pretty pro masturbation.

Strictly amateur over here. How do you get sponsors?

An AskMetaFilter Question Thrice Cited Over Potential BS in the NYT
I like one of the comments on the fourth link, where it says the "cute girl" Shannon refers to was Lennay Kekua.

Ouch.

By which I mean "Good one!"

Enough with the batshit insanity of Mr. Jones
The number of users who do this however is ...awfully small.

I think that's sort of the point. The users are not being called out, just this particular behavior.

It's a classic slippery slope.

There is nothing you can do in this world that is not a slippery slope. Going out for coffee will eventually lead you to seek stronger stimulants ending in a drug overdose. Giving your baby a bath will cause you to enjoy putting bodies in water making you a serial killer who drowns people. Don't even get me started on blowing bubbles.

Why would anyone expect the Southern Poverty Law Center to keep tabs on radical leftist groups? Are they some sort of public service?

It seems weird to make the assumption. SPLC doesn't keep track of NHL scores either, but people seem okay with that.

I still know who you are
The post didn't out anyone. Someone else did all that work.

My understanding was that they did most of the work, but there were still gaps to be filled in.

Frankly I find any thread about breaking someone's anonymity distasteful. There are situations where I agree it should be done, but the bar is very high. People choose to be anonymous for their own reasons and it doesn't become us to sit around and gossip about it.

And for what it's worth, I don't really get this sudden prohibition against all doxxing (not on Metafilter but on the internet in general).

I think it's a sea change based on changing attitudes about privacy. A generation has grown up with the internet now and they have a different perspective about how things should work.

A lot of us old-timers started at a time when anonymity was practically the default. Sure lots of people… [more]

Is being an ass really an inalienable right?
The world in general and America in particular (which is where I live and only the place I feel qualified to pontificate about) are more polarized these days,

The U.S. has always been deeply polarized. In fact all politics always has been.

If you take a look through the record of American political discussions from day one, you'll find all of the same vitriol and backbiting that you see here.

Maybe we could try not hating people for their economic status?
I've noticed what seems to be a trend lately - whenever mention is made of people who have more money than either some people have or some think they should have, we seem to get much less considerate than we are of other topics.

Metafilter used to be more welcoming about things like this, but it's started to get really bad these last fifteen years or so.

That's an interesting attitude actually. Aren't the rich supposed to have too much time on their hands? Where should a rich person be trolling if that's their thing? Or is trolling something only poor people do?

Acording to this if you earn more than US $39,000 per annum as a single person, you are then part of the 1% problem.

To be fair you would have to net that. In the U.S. you would have to earn about $60,000 to get your oppressor badge and be invited to the secret meetings where we conspire to keep the poor in their place.

Yeah, a lot of rich people are assholes, because wealth is a corrupting influence that makes it easier for people to be assholes,

In my experience wealth isn't a corrupting influence, it's an enhancing influence. People who were unpleasant become assholes, people who were nice gain the power to be nicer.

When you give money to the poor, it circulates around and we tax it again.

Fair enough, let's completely bankrupt the 1% and see what we get.

Using some rough rounding:

1,000,000,000 (1 billion dollars) split among 300,000,000 people = $3 per person.
10,000,000,000 (10 billion) = $30
100,000,000,000 (100 billion) = $300
1,000,000,000,000 (1 trillion dollars) = $3,… [more]

there is a time and a place for Christians to loudly and forcefully argue that atheism is based on beliefs which are not true

Beliefs? Plural? For me Atheism is simply the absence of belief that any god exist

However, seeing as you are an Atheist I don't think it unreasonable for me to assume you believe in a primordial soup followed by lots of natural selection.
Because you're on metafilter, I can assume you believe the same thing, atheist or not.

Veering off from the philosophical to the demographic, I'm not sure how good an assumption that actually is. Certainly primordial soup is well represented, but I'm not sure it's an overwhelming majority.

Beware of assuming that theists on Metafilter don't also believe in evolution, adaptation and natural selection.

It's easy to believe in all of those without accepting them as the ultimate origin of humans or indeed life at all. It's also easy to believe that both the primordial soup and the seven day thing are true despite their glaring contradictions.

I don't know that I agree with that. There is a certain maturity you can expect in the audience -- specifically that they know that what they're seeing is from the far edge. Too many of us pretend that somehow we are the only ones who are… [more]
